Welcome to the historical site in the heart of Old Brno. You are standing at Tomešova Street, located under Žlutý kopec above Trýbova and Úvoz. It gently slopes uphill and is hidden behind Masaryk's Oncological Institute back on Tvrdého Street, from where it continues to Roubalova and Jiříkovská Streets. On some maps, this section of the street is marked as a separate entity.

Let’s travel back in time. The first mentions of this location date back to 1714 when fortification equipment in the shape of a four-pointed star was documented here. At that time, it was a strategically important site that protected the city from potential attacks.

Now pay attention to the architecture of this street. Notice its unique layout, which originally consisted of curves and steps. This distinctive shape is direct evidence of its history as a fortification.

Let’s return to the 20th century. In 1929, the street was named after General František Zach, an important regional figure. In 1946, it was renamed in honor of Karl Tomeš, former mayor of Brno, who had a villa here and was murdered in the Dachau concentration camp during World War II.

Let’s move on to the attractions of this street. One of the most tangible things you can see here is the original fortification equipment in the shape of a four-pointed star. In 1958, the Transfusion Institute was built here, which was later relocated to Jihlavská Street in 2002.

Until 2007, there was no public space here. In 2007, a park was constructed that remains an untouched part of this historical site to this day.

Note how the street is hidden behind Masaryk's Oncological Institute. This is one reason why this location is so exceptional. A place once used for fortification now serves as a spot for rest and relaxation.
