Vandammův pomník in the village Žandov is a small classical war memorial. Reminds the capture of French General Dominik Vandamm on 30 August 1813. The building is located in Ústí nad Labem district and forms part of the landscape monument zone of the Bohemian battlefield. It is important as a traditional place where the French warlord's participation in the Battle of Chlumce and Prestana ended.

The Battle of Chlumce and Prestana took place on 29 and 30 August 1813 following Napoleon's victory at Dresden. The French 1st Army Corps, under General Vandamm's command, was to pursue the Allied Army to the Czech Republic and cut off its retreat routes in the Krusty Mountains. The first day of the fight ended in a tie. The next day, however, the situation went against the French when the Prussian force of General Friedrich Kleist appeared unexpectedly in their rear of Kclera.

General Vandamm's capture took place at the final stage of the battle when the French Corps tried to break through the siege. Vandamme fled with several officers to the foot of the mountains into a wooded area near Žandova. It was captured by a Russian naval officer Pavel Andrejevič Kolzakov in the stormy terrain near the Ždírnik creek. The exhausted general asked for his rescue, handed over his sword and was escorted before the Russian Tsar Alexander I and Austrian Emperor Franz I. He was then transported to Prague, where he was attacked by a hateful population on 1 September 1813. He spent the rest of the war in Russian custody in Moscow and Vienna. He was released after Napoleon's abdication in 1814.

The monument in Žandov was not created as a new building, it is a secondary used object. Its foundation is a sandstone milestone or border stone from the end of the 18th century, which originally stood elsewhere. In the 1980s, the locals moved him to Asman's meadow in the Ždírnický valley to end the dispute over the exact location of the general's captivity. The final adjustment took place in 1913 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the battle. At that time, the stone was marked with a German inscription and a cannonball was placed on top of it. In the records of the National Heritage Institute, the construction is sometimes referred to as a French monument to the battle in 1813. This name reflects the nationality of the prisoner, not the donor.

From the point of view of architecture it is a small classicist object made by carved sandstone. The main part consists of a simple chamois needle, which stands on a wider base of sandstone blocks. The walls of this body are decorated with a fine carved line bordura. The total composition is finished by the cannonball on top. On the front, there is a German inscription drawn on the front, which reads in the Czech translation: "Instead of the capture of French Commander General Vandamm on 30 August 1813.".

The monument is north of the village Žandov, approximately 1.5 km from Vandamm's former command post on the hill of Horka near Chlumka. It is located in the forest field on Asman's meadow near Ždírnický creek, in the immediate vicinity of the house No. 93 and a dysfunctional railway overpass on the line Osek-Podmokly. Access to it is currently complicated, as it leads through an unprotected path. In the autumn or winter period, the journey is hampered by the need to cross the river trough. North-east of the monument lies the expected scene of the battle of 1126, but to which no preserved material monuments are attached at the site.

The building is protected as a real cultural monument. It is part of the Landscape Monument Zone of the Field of Combat at Přestán, Chlumce and Varvajov, announced on 1 July 1996. The object of the protection of this territory is an authentic preserved historical association landscape with a high concentration of monuments and mass graves. According to the original record sheet, Vandammův pomník is more historical than artistic.

Vandammův pomník is an inconspicuous but authentic witness to the wars in the Czech countries. For those interested in military history, it is a key point in the country of the Bohemian battlefield. Visiting this place allows you to perceive the historical context of the battle in its original field context.

Welcome to the quiet corner of the country where time has stopped and where every stone has its own voice. You've just stopped by an object that at first sight can act as a simple, silent witness to the surrounding nature. You're standing right in front of Vandamm's memorial. You may think it's just a small piece of stone, but believe me, this tiny war monument carries the incredible weight of events that once shook the whole of Europe. Feel this moment, feel the calm of this place and try to imagine what storms, what battles and what fateful decisions have taken place here in the past.

Let us now move further into time together and understand why this stone is even standing here and why it is important to us. The whole story that this monument tells goes much further than it might seem. The basis of everything you're seeing right now is not a originally cut-off monument, as you might expect, but an old sandstone milestone. This stone has served people since the late eighteenth century to mark roads or borders before it became part of this historical reminder. However, the real break occurred in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirteen. This was the year in which the bloody and decisive wars of Naples took place in these parts. During the Battle of Chlumce and Prestano, there was an event that put this place in history forever. French General Dominik Vandamme has been captured. This event was not only a military achievement, but a symbol of the deep decline of the mighty empire that Napoleon ruled at the time.

Now pay close attention to the subject itself, which is right in front of your eyes. Notice its texture, its colour and its material. It's sandstone, natural material that's very close in this area and that carries traces of time. This stone is not a new building that someone recently built to look ancient. He really is. It's a secondary element that has been modified over time to fulfil its new role. In the year of a thousand nine hundred thirty-three, exactly a hundred years after the major battle, this object was completed in its final form. The people of the time wanted to honor the memory and remind us of the events that happened here. When you look at him, do not look for complex works of art, tall towers or decorative statues because his strength and beauty lie in his simplicity and that it is an original, historical milestone that has endured centuries and remained true to its essence.

When looking at this monument, it is not possible to specify the names of the personalities that are inseparably linked to it. Imagine General Dominik Vandamm, the man whose fate was so unhappily connected in this valley in a thousand eight hundred and thirteen years. His capture was a huge topic of politics and military art back then. We must also remember the monarchs who then decided the fate of the entire nations. Alexander first and Francis first were the people whose decisions formed the world in which we lived today. And we must not forget names such as Pavel Andrejevič Kolzakov, which are characters that moved in the military and political environment at that time and that affected the course of the events at that time. General Vandamm's fate was eventually linked to Napoleon's fall. After the abdication of this powerful leader, the general was released from custody in a thousand and eight hundred and fourteen in the year, closing down one chapter of his life and the entire great era.

You may now be interested in one strange thing about the exact place where this stone stands. History is not always as clear and straightforward as it seems at first sight. There were some disputes about exactly where the general's capture took place. People have been fighting over which place is right. In order to finally put an end to these disagreements and debates, this sandstone had to be relocated in the 1980s. He found his new place in Asman's meadow within the Ždírnik Valley. It is this relocation that has helped to end the disputes and ensure that the monument has its firm and clear place. It's fascinating how even a small object can create the need to seek out the truth about the past and how people desire certainty in what happened.

Feel the atmosphere of this place now. You are part of the landscape monument zone, which means that the surrounding nature is protected here and gives this monument a very dignified and peaceful environment. This stone is not just a dead object, it's part of a living landscape that still tells stories about courage, the fall of the mighty and the fleeting of human life.

I hope this brief insight into the past has brought you new thoughts and interesting views of the world around you. Before you go any further, stop for a moment in silence and observe the surroundings. There are many other secrets waiting for you. Continue your journey, explore other parts of this beautiful landscape and enjoy each moment spent in this historic environment. Thank you for spending this moment with me. Goodbye.
