The Třebíč windmill, also known as the Windowsill, is a historical monument to the Kanciborka in U Větrník Street. It was built in 1836 by the brothers Karel and František Budishowski. This Dutch-type mill was used to grind the groin for tanneries instead of grain. Its history is closely linked to the industrial development of Třebíče in the 19th century, which contributed to the modernisation of traditional crafts such as tannery.

The construction was originally planned as wooden, but eventually was made of stone. The architecture combines various materials; The building has several floors of stone and brick wall. The chamber cone-shaped tower has a diameter of 8 meters. There are three windows in most floors, last, fourth, four. The current design corresponds to the 19th century construction thanks to the 1977 reconstruction.

The ownership of the mill has changed in time. The town hall bought it in 1929 and since then the building has been managed by the city of Třebíč. After repairs in 1977, the mill was used for housing, which affected its interior. Further reconstruction took place between 2016 and 2020, during which new blades were installed and exposures were established.

Key events include completion of construction in 1836 and repairs in 1977 and 2016- 2020. The mill was originally supposed to be powered by oxen, but it didn't happen. The blades and wooden shaft were made by an expert in windmills.

Today the Třebíč windmill is opened as an exhibition object. After completion of the reconstruction in 2020 there are on the ground floor exposition dedicated to grinding groin and tannery. The second floor represents the history of the mill as a living space. The blades can be started motorically during the tours, but full operation is not possible due to the proximity of residential houses. The first season after the mill was opened, 7,000 people visited.

The Třebíč windmill is a technical monument and a cultural heritage that captures its history and architecture. The reconstruction was awarded by Zlatá járábina - Vysočina Region Award for the cultural achievement of the year 2020 and for cultural activity in 2021. This underlines its importance for the region. The mill is worth visiting not only as a historical object, but also as a place where you can discover interesting things about the life and industry of past times.

Welcome to Třebíči. You are standing in front of one of the most significant buildings in this part of the city, which stands above the surrounding area and immediately attracts the view of everyone who stops by. Before your eyes, there is a windmill that people in the neighborhood call the Windowsill. Look at his unique silhouette, which is drawn against the sky. Its Dutch type is visible at first sight and gives the whole place a unique atmosphere. Feel the stability and strength this building emits. It's an object that's lived through centuries, and it's still here to tell us its story.

Let us now return together to a deep past, namely the year of the thousand hundred and thirty-six. At that time Třebíč went through a period of great industrial development and the need for new machinery and production space was very high. It was then that two brothers, Karel and František Budishowski, decided to build this mill. It was an ambitious work to serve a specific purpose. You might be surprised that this mill was not intended for grinding grain as usual for windmills. His job was grinding groin. This activity was absolutely necessary for tanneries, i.e. artisans, who were processing skins at the time. Imagine the activity at the time, the constant movement and the sound of machines carried by the air through the power of the wind. This mill was therefore an important link to the industrial chain at the time in Třebíči.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and what you see right in front of you. Notice the shape of this tower. It has the shape of a chamber cone and its diameter is eight meters. It's fascinating to think about how the original plans differed from what we see today. Originally, the Budishowski brothers planned to build a wood mill, which would have been quite common and easy to implement at the time. In the end, however, they decided for much more durable material and the mill was built from stone. This change gave him weight and resistance, which made him resist the trials of time for almost two centuries. If you look up, you can see his blades. You and the wooden shaft that drives them were made by hand of oak wood. The oak is known for its incredible strength and resistance to weather influences, which was absolutely crucial for working with the wind. The handmade work that the craftsmen had to spend on these parts is felt in every piece of wood.

The history of this place is rich and full of transformations that reflect changes throughout the city's life. For decades, the mill was part of industrial life, but over time its role changed. The town hall bought it in the year one thousand and twenty-nine and since then it has been managed by the city of Třebíč. Over the centuries, the mill went through various stages of its life. In the year one thousand and seventy-seven, the construction of the reconstruction was completed, after which the building was built. The mill has thus become a home for people, which is a very interesting contrast to its original, rugged industrial nature. From a place where wood used to grind for tanneries, it became a cosy place for everyday life.

You may be wondering what the real lives of those two brothers, Karl and Francis were like. They were people with great vision who understood the needs of their city and invested in something that was meant to serve not only them, but also the entire local craft. Their decision to build a stone tower instead of wood was bold, but it is precisely because of this decision that we can stand here today and admire this building. There is a mystery - how did they manage to plan such a precise construction that lasted so long without today's modern technology and calculations? Perhaps their secret weapon was the combination of experience, the emphasis on quality material such as oak and stone and their deep connection to this place.

But I will no longer hold you. The windbreaker is just one of many beautiful and interesting things you can find in Třebíči. I suggest you continue your walk and discover the next corner of this city. Every street, every corner, and every building here has its own story waiting to be revealed. Feel the atmosphere of this place and enjoy every moment spent in Třebíči. I wish you a pleasant further discovery and enjoy the rest of your day. Goodbye.

Themed route

Since the line "Circuit" is empty in the entry, it is necessary to respect the essential rule and design the route exclusively within the monument itself and its immediate area. So I cannot include any surrounding castles, museums or natural formations that are not explicitly mentioned. The following proposal focuses on a detailed examination of the windmill in Třebíči and its immediate surroundings, which are part of this particular object.

Větrný mlýn v Třebíči Type: Historical technical monument. Why is it worth a visit: It is a unique example of the working of wind drive, where the visitor can examine the internal mechanism and understand the principle of converting wind energy into mechanical work.

Cane mill Type: Outdoor area. Why is worth a visit: It allows you to look at the overall appearance of the building up close and appreciate the architectural details of the facade, which are often neglected from a distance.

Mill Tower Type: Vertical part of the construction. Why is worth a visit: It offers the best view of the surrounding landscape and allows you to watch the wing of the mill spin, which is a key part of its function and visual identity.

Exposure inside the mill Type: Internal space with exhibition. Why is worth a visit: Here are placed historical artifacts and labels explaining the history of the mill operation, which complements the technical view of the cultural and social context.

Park near the mill Type: Green Zone. Why is it worth a visit: It provides a quiet place to relax after a tour and allows you to enjoy the atmosphere of the place in connection with the natural environment surrounding this technical monument.

This route is logically arranged so that the visitor first understands the overall context, then immerses himself in the details of the inner facility and finally enjoys a view of the height and calm in the surrounding green. All points are part of one whole, which corresponds to the entry on empty surroundings.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surroundings of the mill awaken to life. The trees start to green and the sun's rays are fine during this period, which beautifully highlights the details of the ongoing repair. It is advisable to wear layered clothes because the morning temperatures may still be low. With fewer people, you can enjoy a quiet tour.

In the summer months the surrounding area is full of thick green and the sun shines the strongest. The atmosphere is alive, but due to the high temperatures, the building may be uncomfortable. We recommend you come early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and the biggest heat. Dress lightly and don't forget drinking mode.

Autumn brings gold colors and brown shades to the landscape. Fog and softer light create a nostalgic atmosphere around the historic building. It's good to have a waterproof jacket and firmer shoes, because the soil can be damp. The best time to visit is in the morning when light is most suitable for observing details.

Winter covers the mill with silence and often with snow. The days are short and the light is gray, which gives the memory a serious touch. Due to freezing and ongoing reconstruction, the surrounding area may be less accessible. It is necessary to have very warm clothes, including hats and gloves. Plan a visit on bright days to use as much daylight as possible.
