Becher's villa, located in the residential district of Westend in Karlovy Vary, is an important cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This Art Nouveau building from the early 20th century was originally built as a family palace for the entrepreneurs of Gustav Becher and today serves as an interactive gallery focused on young artists.

The foundation of Becher's villa is closely linked to the development of Karlovy Vary as a spa centre. At the beginning of the 20th century, Europe witnessed rapid industrialisation and urbanisation, which was also reflected in construction. New architectural styles such as Art Nouveau were promoted in Bohemia, which reflected modern directions in art. Gustav Becher, grandson of the founder of the famous Karlovy Vary liqueur, decided to build this representative villa in the emerging Westend district. The construction plan was drawn up in 1912 and the construction was carried out only in the autumn and winter periods, so as not to bother the spa operation. Construction was completed in 1914.

Architecturally, Becher's villa is a three-storey building with an ocular corner tower and a mansard roof, which are typical features of the Art Nouveau. The building has a square ground plan with exiting circular risality of the entrance staircase and winter garden. On top of the roof there is a skylight and a skylight, which is another characteristic of this architectural style. The windows are oblong with paspartame and the risalities have semicircular enchantments. The outer walls are plastered to mimic the stone, and the plinth is treated as a decorative Cyclops wall. The original building contained numerous artistic elements, including oak cassette ceilings, painted stained windows and Becher coat of arms with year 1914. The original decorative art deco paintings were discovered during the reconstruction.

The history of owning Becher's villa is complicated. After the death of Gustav Becher in 1921, the villa became the property of the Association for Chemical and Metal Production from Ústí nad Labem, but it was still called Becher's Villa. After the Munich Agreement in 1938 it became the seat of the regional headquarters of the SS. After the end of World War II, it was nationalized and transferred to the property of the Czechoslovak state, where it served as the House of Pioneers and Youth in 1951-1987. After closure and gradual decaying, the building was reconstructed by the Karlovy Vary Region between 2009 and 2011, leading to its transformation into the Interactive Gallery of Becher Villa.

Key events in the development of Becher's villa include completion of the construction in 1914 and its protection as cultural monuments of the Czech Republic since 1995. In May 2011 a new gallery was opened, which became a branch of the Art Gallery Karlovy Vary.

Today Becher's villa is not only a cultural monument, but also a lively centre of modern and contemporary art. There are exhibitions, workshops and workshops that attract young artists and the general public. In the basement there are studios, social hall and exhibition premises, where the history of the Becher family is presented as well as the emergence of the Westend residential district.

Becher's villa is worth visiting not only because of its architectural beauty and rich history, but also as a place of inspiration for artists. It is a reminder of how tradition and modernity can intersect in one object, offering a unique experience to each visitor.

Welcome to Karlovy Vary, a city where history encounters incredible elegance and where every stone tells the tale of ancient glory. Right now, standing here, you have one of the most distinctive pieces of architecture in this part of town. Take a look at this building, which stands in the middle of the green in the western part of the villa district. It's Vila Becher. Feel the atmosphere radiating from it. It's not just an ordinary house, it's a monumental witness to the times when the world was changing, when new directions were born, and when luxury manifested itself in every detail. Do you feel the calm nobility? This is the force of Art Nouveau style that you can perceive in its entirety.

Let us now go back in time together to understand why this building was created in the first place and how important it was for its people back then. Imagine the early 20th century. The time when Karlovy Vary experienced their golden age, when people from all over the world came here looking for treatment and society. In this environment, the headquarters were created to reflect the success and status of their owners. This villa was not built as a common family house, but as a real family palace. Its owner was Gustav Becher, a successful and important entrepreneur who sought an ideal place in this area for his new, luxurious mansion. The entire construction process was carefully planned and completed in the year one thousand nine hundred fourteen. This was just before the European fate changed and the world entered a time of great conflict. Becher's villa was thus created as a symbol of prosperity and stability at a time that was about to change forever shortly thereafter.

Now pay attention to the very form of the building that is surrounding you. If you look at its shapes, you immediately understand why this building is considered the ultimate example of Art Nouveau. Secese, as it is called in this direction, sought harmony between human creation and natural shapes, fluency and elegance. Notice how the building floats in space. If you look up, your attention will certainly attract the most important component - the octagonal corner tower. It is a fascinating element that gives the whole object dynamism while giving it a sense of strength and stability. This tower is not just an ornament, it's a dominant point that determines the character of the entire building. And then look at the roof. It's a classic Mansard roof, which is absolutely typical of this architectural direction. Its shape creates an interesting game of shadows and lines that changes the appearance of the villa depending on how the light hits. The whole building seems to be carved out of one idea of perfection and beauty.

Behind this beauty is a man named Karl Heller. He was the architect who had to turn all these visions into a stone and decorated reality. Imagine his work, his efforts to make every line, every edge and every corner of the building consistent with the idea of a modern and luxurious mansion for men like Gustav Becher. Becher wasn't just the owner, he was the man who lived in this villa, who hosted and built his history here. This villa was his home, his refuge and his business card from the world. But the history of this place is complex and constantly changing. After World War II, there was a major turnaround when the villa became the property of the Czechoslovak state. This was the moment when the private palace gradually began to turn into an object with a public character, which was the first step towards what we see today.

You may find it interesting how this space has turned from a closed world of rich entrepreneurs into an open space for creators. Although the villa was a part of state property for many years, its new, modern chapter began only recently. In the year two thousand eleven an interactive gallery opened here. Imagine the contrast - instead of the silent passages of the family palace, the energy of young artists is now pulsing here. Instead of private evenings, there are now exhibitions that inspire new generations of artists. This transformation is fascinating because it shows that monuments may not just be dead museums of the past, but may be living places that bring new life and new ideas. That is why this building is today protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It is a recognition of her value, her beauty and her importance to our common heritage.

You stand in front of a place that connects three different worlds: a world of great business beginning of the century, a world of architecture Art Nouveau and a world of contemporary art. It's a place where history doesn't just read in books, but in every view of that octave tower or that majestic roof. May this journey in Karlovy Vary further inspire you. Now, I beg you, continue to search this beautiful neighborhood. You may decide to enter the villa directly so that you can feel the atmosphere of the gallery and look at the works of young artists who are looking for their own way in these historic spaces. Thank you for spending this moment with us, and we will wait you out for another tour of the city's hidden treasures. Goodbye.
