Vila Chaloupka in Luhačovice in Zlín district represents an important monument to the popular Art Nouveau from 1902, designed by architect Dusan Jurkovic. The building located in Dr. Palka Blaha street with a descriptive number 126 was created by a radical reconstruction of an older classical house and connects Carpathian folk construction with modern Art Nouveau forms. The building is registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic and shows the first phase of modernization of the local spa area.

The original foundation of the villa was a ground-floor brick building called Kitchen House with a descriptive number of 10, built in 1851. In January 1902, Dušan Jurkovič developed in its Brno studio a project of its overall adaptation for the new manager of Cyril Holuby Spa. The reconstruction fit into a broader context of the development of Luhačovice under the leadership of a newly established Czech public limited company. Jurkovic's concept was based on the idea of creating a cultural and social centre of Western Slavs within the Habsburg monarchy. In addition, the architect covered the entire realization himself financially.

The villa is closest to Jurkovic's so-called Radhošt period. Free standing building on a rectangular plan kept the original brick ground floor, which the architect supplemented with a new grafted floor and covered with a saddle roof with valbias. The facade is characterized by contrasting colour. The entrance facade oriented to the southwest highlights the robe with a segmented ledge above which there is a painting of two sunflowers in the pot. On the left of the window on the ground floor there is a plastic coloured relief of sunflower with the original number descriptive 10 and on the right the Art Nouvka inscription. The floor in this facade is supplemented by a covered stump, which passes in a glazed porch on carved crackers with a polygonal bay. The shield of the house is wooden, trapezoidal and decorative in two levels. There is another bathrobe on the garden front and the roof cover is broken by two windscreens formed by the lining of the roof on wooden crackers.

The villa originally served as a background of the spa manager and as accommodation for visitors. A three-room apartment with a kitchen for Cyril Holuby was set up on the ground floor and four rooms were set up on the floor. The house soon became a natural center for meeting important cultural figures, including the author Alois Mrštík. The property of the spa company remained a monument in the next decades.

In 1992, the villa won cultural heritage status. Between 1995 and 1997, the public limited company Lazne Luhačovice joined a complex monument rehabilitation of a dilapidated building. During the reconstruction, the interiors were equipped with faithful replicas of the original Art Nouveau furniture designed for the house by Dušan Jurkovič. The original sets of this equipment are permanently stored in collections of the Museum of Southeast Moravia in Zlín.

Currently, Chaloupka Villa serves as a representative four-star spa house offering accommodation in two luxury apartments. In the immediate neighbourhood there is a spa park, Jurkovic's house, Spa Theatre, colonnade with Vincent's spring and the building of the White Quarter. The building is an authentic document of a unique chapter of Czech modern architecture on the boundary of tradition and Art Nouveau. Visitor Luhačovice should not miss the tour of this distinctive building because it represents one of the purest examples of Jurkovic's specific creative manuscript.

Welcome to Luhačovice, a place where healing springs meet extraordinary beauty and where every house tells its own story. Right now, you're standing in front of one of the most remarkable gems in this city, Villa Chaloupek. Stop for a second, get some air and just look at the building in front of you. The first impression is certainly fascinating, isn't it? This villa does not act as a rough building, but rather as a colourful dream that grew directly from the surrounding nature. There is a sense of warmth, hospitality and certain playfulness that is so typical of this place. Feel the colors and shapes that attract you at first glance and call you to explore it further.

To understand why this villa looks just like this, we have to go back more than a hundred years. Imagine there was no pretentious villa in this place, but a much more modest object. In 1851 the original ground floor house was built here, which the locals called the Kitchen House and wore descriptive number ten. It was an ordinary brick object in the spirit of classicism that served its practical purposes. But everything changed at the beginning of the twentieth century, namely in 1902. That's when it came time for radical change.

Whoever decided to turn this humble house into an architectural jewel was the famous architect Dušan Jurkovič. Jurkovic wasn't just a builder, he was a visionary who could see beauty in the simplicity of folk architecture and wanted to elevate it to the level of high art. Villa Chaloupek was designed for his close friend, Cyril Holuby, who, at the time, held an important position as the manager of the spa here. So imagine this combination of friendship and creativity, which resulted in the creation of a building that was meant to be not only a home but also a representative seat of the administrator.

Now please take a closer look at the architecture itself. What you see is a masterpiece of the so-called People's Art Nouveau. Notice how brilliantly Jurkovic connected two completely different worlds. Look down at the ground floor. Here the original wall core from 1851 was preserved, which the architect incorporated into his new concept. Now look above. Above the walled foundation is a new grafted floor. This contrast between stone and wood is crucial. Jurkovic drew here from the traditional Carpathian folk architecture, which he knew very well, and connected it with the decorative and colourful Art Nouveau, which was the peak of modern times.

Now pay attention to the front entrance. It's the part of the house that welcomes you and is the most decorative. If you look closely, you'll see a painting of two sunflowers. These flowers are not by chance here, symbolizing joy, light and nature, which exactly corresponds to the spirit of the whole work. In addition to the painting you can find a plastic relief that gives the facade depth and character. All of these details work together so that the building does not appear cumbersome, but slightly and aerically, almost as if it were floating above the ground. The whole building is rich in colour, which in combination with wood creates a harmonious whole that fits perfectly into the landscape of Luhačovice.

When we think about this place, we can't forget the people who inhaled his life. Cyril Holuby was not only the owner, it was a man who played a vital role in the development of spa operations in Luhačovice. His relationship with Dusan Jurkovic was based on deep mutual respect and friendship. It is thanks to this bond that Vila Chaloupka was created as we see it today. In connection with the house also appears the name Alois Dead, another important person who was associated with this environment. So this villa was not just an ordinary house, but a meeting place for intellectuals, artists and people who formed the culture of their time.

Now I want to impress you with one fact, which may not be visible at first sight, but which says a lot about the relationship of an architect to his friend and to the work itself. Do you know that this radical redevelopment from a simple Kitchenhouse to a spectacular villa was not just a matter of design? Dušan Jurkovič, as part of its generosity and friendly gesture towards Cyril Holuby, has covered the entire implementation himself financially. Imagine, the architect not only designed this unique house, but also provided the means to be created exactly as he imagined it. It is a rare example of how personal feelings and friendship can affect the shape of architecture and leave a mark in history.

Vila Chaloupka has been through various stages over the years. Its value was officially recognised in 1992 when it was registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. This was an important step towards protecting it for future generations. But in order for the house to return to its original glory, a deeper raid was needed. Between 1995 and 1997 a comprehensive reconstruction was carried out by the company Lazne Luhačovice. The most valuable thing about this repair is that the interiors were equipped with replicas of original equipment. This allows us to see today the atmosphere of the house as its first inhabitants felt at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Now, if you look around again, try to imagine how this house was lived. How the morning sun leaned on the grafted walls and how sunflowers on the facade welcomed visitors coming from spa paths. Vila Chaloupka is more than just a building made of wood and stone. It is a monument to folk creativity, proof that tradition and modernity do not have to be repelled, but can be beautifully supplemented. It's a place where the love of craft meets the courage to experiment.

Thank you for taking a short walk in time and space. I hope Vila Chaloupka has attracted you with its colour and story. Now I encourage you to take a closer look at the building from different angles. Feel the texture of the wood, look for details in the ornaments and let yourself drift through the atmosphere of this unique place. Check the facade one more time and try to find all the elements we talked about. Then you can continue to discover other beauty Luhačovice. I wish you a pleasant journey and many new experiences. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The Villa Chaloupek tour in Luhačovice is best enjoyed in the morning, when the surrounding peace of the spa is the strongest and sunlight ideally irradiates the colorful details of the folk Art Nouveau by architect Dusan Jurkovic. Bring comfortable shoes for walking on the colonnade, a drinking bottle and a camera.

For the best pictures of the villa we recommend to take pictures in the morning from the street where unique wooden elements, coloured tiles and specific shapes of the roof designed in 1902 during the reconstruction of the original classical house. Avoid direct light at noon, which would overshadow the fine details of the facade.

During a 30-minute walk in the immediate vicinity of the monument you will discover the gems of the spa architecture. Visit the nearby spa park Luhačovice, admire the famous Jurkovic house, see the building of the Spa Theatre, taste the spring of Vincent on the colonnade and go through the picturesque spa villas in the White Quarter.

Families with children will appreciate a modest walk along flat spa paths, where small visitors can relax on benches, drink mineral springs and admire the fabulous appearance of historical buildings, which will impress even the smallest discoverers.

Themed route

I propose a thematic tour of the most beautiful spa places.

2. Spa Park Luhačovice - Park. This green oasis of calm attracts pleasant walks along the modified paths and offers a unique atmosphere in the middle of nature.

3. Jurkovic House - Building. The building captures every visitor with its fairy-tale appearance, colorful colors and unmistakable handwriting of the famous architect.

4. Spa Theatre - Theatre. The cultural stand in the heart of the spa enriches the social life of the guests with its long history and charming exterior form.

5. Colonnade with the source Vincent - Colonnade. The modern roofed building allows you to taste the famous healing spring and serves as the main center of social events.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the spa park around the villa awakens to life and the growing lush green along with flowering bushes creates a charming framework for colorful folk elements of the building. It is relatively quiet in Luhačovice during this period, so you can look at the architecture without large crowds of spa guests. The weather is variable, so choose layered clothes and waterproof shoes for spring showers. The best time to visit is the morning hours when daylight is brightest and the park offers undisturbed peace.

In summer there is a lively atmosphere of the peak spa season in the surroundings of Chaloupka Villa, supported by rich sunshine and rich flowering park beds. The strong noon sun gives the full colours of the facade and wooden formwork, which is in excellent condition. However, since the most people are in the spa at this time, it is best to plan for an early morning or an early evening, when the park is depopulated and the highest temperatures fall. Light air clothes, headgear and sunglasses are recommended, while the shade of grown trees nearby offers a pleasant refuge from the heat.

During autumn, the surrounding area gains a nostalgic touch when the leaves of the surrounding trees turn into warm shades of gold, orange and red, which perfectly match the natural wood of the villa. Soft and low laid afternoon light together with occasional foggy hares creates a mysterious background for lovers of peaceful walks and photography. Visiting after summer falls significantly, thus avoiding any crowds. Due to the cooler air, you will appreciate a warm sweater, a wind-proof jacket and solid walking shoes on wet fallen leaves. The ideal time for arrival is around noon and in the early afternoon before the sun sets behind the surrounding hills.

In winter, the villa under the snow cover is transformed into a real fairy tale cottage, whose carved shields and roofs contradict the white duvet. Especially in advent time, it has a snowy and quiet spa area with an unrepeatable charm that amplifies the fine scattered light of street lamps after dark. The number of visitors is minimal, you will be walking almost alone. The need is a warm winter coat, scarf, gloves and shoes with high quality anti-slip soles, as the park paths can be frozen. Due to early dimming and shorter days, aim for a monument around noon when the most natural daylight can be captured.
