Viniční sloup Monument

The Viniční sloup, a Baroque-style monument, stands at the intersection of Trojská and Schwankova streets in Prague 7, Troja. Originally built in the early 17th century to commemorate plague victims, this monument has undergone significant changes throughout its history.

Its origins date back to the first half of the 17th century when it was erected near a castle and crossroads. The monument served as a reminder of the cemetery of plague victims lying above the column. Unfortunately, its original location was destroyed after 1948, but thanks to efforts from the Prague Zoological Gardens, it was saved and rebuilt in 2002 by Nadací Quido Schwanka – Troja, město v zeleni.

The Viniční sloup is a limestone column with an Ionic capital and ball standing on a square base. Its architectural style is characteristic of the Baroque period, featuring a distinctive Ionic capital and ball.

While there is limited information about its ownership or administrative changes throughout history, it's worth noting that the monument was rebuilt in 2002 by Nadací Quido Schwanka – Troja, město v zeleni. This event marked a significant turning point in the monument's history, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

One interesting fact is that a similar monument stands in Libni, dated to 1628-1629. This similarity highlights the significance of these monuments as a testament to the plague's devastating impact on Prague during the early 17th century.
