Vlastislav Hillfort
Vlastislav, also known as Na Šance, is an early medieval fort in the village of Vlastislav in the Czech Mediterranean, district of Litoměřice. This archaeological site has a long history of settlement, dating back to Neolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age, with a major construction period in the first half of the tenth century. Since 1964, it has been protected as a cultural monument.
The fort is located on the island above the valley of the Modela stream, up to 320 metres above sea level, giving it a strategic defensive position. According to the Kosm Chronicle, Prince Vlastislav of the Lucha tribe was the founder of the castle. Although the exact time of origin and fate cannot be determined with absolute certainty, archaeological findings point to the settlement already in the eneolite and the time of the mothballs cultures. Slavic objects from the second half of the ninth century suggest that the fort was built in the first half of the tenth century and disappeared at the latest at the beginning of the eleventh century. Vlastislav probably belonged to the defensive line of the houses in the area of the Ohře stream, supplemented by a castle like Hradec near Kadana, Drahúš, Levousy, Classy and Litomerice.
Architectural is interesting with its three-piece fortification. The island is sloping towards the southwest, while the north side was protected by three arch cross walls that divided the fort into three spaces and protected the most accessible part. Waves, of which the middle and inner are damaged by agricultural activity, today only resemble field waves. The outside wall is still two meters. The walls were made up of wood-clay structures with grates and chambers filled with clay and stones, the face of the wall was reinforced with stone wall 86 centimeters wide. The inner wall was built from horizontally stored logs. The total width of the wall was about five metres and was protected by a nine-metre moat, to the bottom of which the stakes were stuck.
The most populated part of the castle was the outer area in the northern part with dimensions of 180 × 110 metres. Here, deep buildings with fireplace, storage holes and stake and cabin above ground were exposed. The central area had dimensions of 60 × 120 metres and internal 110 × 80 metres. The early medieval burial ground was also an important part of the castle.
Vlastislav is today protected as a cultural monument and accessible to visitors. Despite its historical significance, it remains a relatively unknown location, making it an ideal place for those who want to discover unique traces of early medieval settlers. The visit offers an opportunity not only to see archaeological findings, but also to understand the strategic importance of the castles in the history of the Czech countries. This monument is a testament to the region's rich and complex past and is worth discovering in person so that visitors can immerse themselves in its historical context.

You're standing in front of a vast territory that can tell a long and fascinating history since the oldest. If you look around, you'll see the wreckage of the fortifications that tells you the rich past of this place.
Vlastislav has roots dating back to neolithic, suggesting that it was inhabited in ancient times. This site became an important centre during the eneolithic and bronze times. The Slavs started living here in the second half of the 9th century, which was an important milestone in the development of this area. The first half of the 10th century brought the main construction period, during which the early medieval castle was built here. However, in the early 11th century it was gradually abandoned.
Look up and look at the three-piece fortification of the fort, which is the characteristic element of this place. The north side is protected by three arched cross walls, which was a common safeguard measure at this time. The castle is surrounded by a two-metre external wall and its walls were made of wood-clay structures with added clay and stones, which gives the structures their robust appearance. The total width of the wall was about five metres, while a nine-metre ditch with stakes at the bottom provided another level of defense.
Vlastislav is also associated with a historical personality of the same name. Although the specific people who lived or were active here have not been preserved, we can imagine that this place played an important role in their lives.
The interesting thing is that Vlastislav probably served as part of the defence line on the river Ohře. This strategic location could protect the fort from hostile attacks and ensure the safety of the population.

Seasonal recommendations
Spring on the archaeological site Vlastislav brings a awakening landscape where vegetation comes to life after winter sleep and lighting is soft and scattered. The atmosphere is calm and invited to reflect on the centuries that have passed, because the trees are still developing leaves and do not prevent the sight of ruins. This period is ideal for visitors in terms of temperatures which are already pleasant but not stuffy. I recommend putting on fixed shoes because after winter rains the paths can be muddy and slippery. The best time to visit is in the morning, when the light is brightest and shadows shorter, which makes field orientation easier. The crowds are minimal at this time, so you can enjoy the memory in silence and privacy.
Leto offers the longest days and the most intense sun, which reveals every detailed structure of the remains of the buildings. Nature is in full bloom, green grass and blooming meadows create a living contrast to stone debris. The atmosphere is full of energy and life, but it also threatens higher temperatures and drought. The practical advice is to visit as early as possible in the morning, before larger groups of tourists appear and temperatures start to rise. It is necessary to wear light, light clothes, hat and have enough drinking regime. The noon sun can be uncomfortable, so it is advisable to look for shade under trees or bring your own roof.
Autumn brings golden and red shades of leaves to Vlastislav, creating a dramatic and romantic background for shooting ruins. The light is already lower and warmer, which gives the place a melancholy and mystical touch. Nature is slowly preparing for winter sleep, so there are fewer insects and more peace. For clothes is suitable layering because the wounds and evenings are already cold, while the afternoon can still be sunny. The most suitable is a visit to the afternoon when the sun shines at an angle and lights the walls of the ruins from the side, which will highlight the relief and texture of the stone. The crowds are still thin, but with the coming holidays there may be slightly more people this weekend.
Winter in this historic place is quiet, gray, and it is an impression of abandonment, which is very attractive to history lovers. Snow or ice on the ground and on the debris creates a cold and sharp atmosphere where time seems to stand. The lighting is short and weak, so it must be assumed that it will be dark about 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon. Practical advice includes the need to wear warm winter clothes, gloves and a hat because the wind can be sharp and cool fast. The best time to visit is the late morning when the day is brightest and the temperature is highest. In view of the short days and the possible closure of the weather routes, it is appropriate to verify accessibility in advance and to take account of the shortening of the tour time.
