Chudolaz Mill No. 36 is a historical water mill in the village Medonosy on Mělnicka. Today, the building from the first half of the 19th century consists of a monument-protected torso, which shows the traditional folk architecture and technical level of the then rural buildings.

The oldest history and the builders of the mill were left with little information. However, we know that it originated in the first half of the 19th century, in the era of national renewal and the beginning of the industrial revolution. The rural construction of the time was based on craft traditions and local materials, which was particularly reflected in this mill by the use of sandstone blocks.

The construction is a typical example of folk construction. The ground floor consisted of sandstone masonry, while the floor was grafted and the shield was decorated with decorative pedestal. The whole building was covered by a saddle roof. The water was brought to the drive of the mill wheel. From the original layout, only the living part in the torsion state and the turbine fountain, which remained after the mill, has been preserved until today.

A significant technical element was Francis' 18,5 HP turbine. It was installed in 1930 and worked at 5.25 meters. However, this facility was disposed of after 1989. The absence of maintenance since the end of the 20th century subsequently led to the gradual decay and demise of the building.

Since 1995 the Chudolaz Mill has been protected as a real-estate cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It is currently listed as an endangered monument in a torsional state.

Despite the dismal state, the mill remains an important witness to the history of water structures in the valley of the river Liběchovka. Visiting the site offers a view of the remains of folk construction and technical equipment, which in the past formed an integral part of the rural economy.

Welcome to the historical monument, which is the Chudolaz Mill No. 36, located in the picturesque place Medonosy. You are standing before a building whose roof is covered by ancient wood and whose masonry is carved from sandstone blocks. This water mill, which boasts its history and architectural value, will welcome you with the silent thunder of the Liběchovka River, which flowed towards it.

The Chudoza Mill was built in the first half of the nineteenth century. The original construction was based on the needs of the then rural community, which relied on the mechanical energy of the river for various production processes. Although we are not aware of the particular architectural style, we can imagine how strange and full of innovation that time was.

Let's look at the details. Look up to the roof, which is formed by grafted elements. These wooden structures are a characteristic feature of many folk buildings from that time. The ground floor stands out with its sandstone blocks that give the whole building a solid and durable look. On the facade you can see a decorative pedestal, which provides an elegant finish.

A key part of the mill was the Francis turbine, installed in 1930. This turbine had the power of eighteen and a half horsepower and served as a necessary element for the operational needs of the mill. Although specific personalities associated with this monument remained unknown, their work undoubtedly influenced local history.

The interesting thing about this place is its current state. After 1989, the building began to disintegrate when the turbine was stolen and not taken care of. In 1995 the mill was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, which underlines its historical and cultural value.

Now, when we look at the overall picture, you can realize how important it is to preserve such monuments. Although the building suffers from neglect and stands in a torsional state, its historical roots are undeniable.

Thank you for your visit to Chudoza Mill. We hope you've had fun and gained new knowledge of this fascinating place. If you want to explore more nearby monuments, Medonosy offers many other attractions. With God and have a better day!

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, life wakes up around a broken mill. Fresh greenery and blooming trees create fresh contrast to the grey remains of the walls. The light is soft in this period and very pleasant to observe the details of the construction. I recommend arriving early in the morning when the air is the cleanest. But for spring heating and rain, prepare for mud on the road, so wear solid and waterproof shoes.

In the summer months there is a sense of full force of nature and heat. The sun falls directly on the stone remains, creating sharp shadows and bright colors. The atmosphere is alive thanks to dense vegetation and the sound of water. In order not to get hot, visit the place in the early morning hours when the air is even colder. Don't forget the headgear and plenty of fluids, because in the open wreckage can be very hot during the day.

Autumn brings melancholy beauty and fog, which often flow to the water at the mill. The colour of leaves gives the place a golden touch, which perfectly complements old stones. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the sun shines low and creates long shadows. It is necessary to carry a waterproof jacket and to keep an eye on slippery leaves and moist surfaces between the debris.

Winter makes the mill a quiet and lonely place in the landscape. Without leaves you can better see all the details of the construction and frost can create interesting patterns on the walls. The atmosphere is calm and grating. Due to short days and cold, plan a visit around noon when the most light is. The need is very warm clothes and shoes with good grip to keep you from slipping on snow or freezing.
