At the time, this tower was not just an ordinary building, but a key element of the defense system. It was created as a forward point of fortification of the castle of Cologne. Imagine the situation at that time when the city's security was a priority and each such tower served as a clean place where it was possible to catch enemy movement in time and warn the surrounding area. Even if you look at the tower today as a beautiful view tower, the spirit of the medieval guard is hidden in its foundations. The first paper trail about this construction, about this bastion above the Zálátní mill, appears in documents from 1497. This confirms to us that its existence is deeply rooted in the history of our city, and that it was already part of the Fortress of Cologne over half a thousand years ago.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself, which is right before your eyes. Even though time is relentlessly abandoned, the tower has preserved its essence. Feel the power of the stone mantle that forms the body of this building. It is this stone that gives the bastion its character and stability. The tower is currently open and a new wooden staircase has been prepared for your comfortable climb. Notice the contrast between the old, stationary rock and the new, warmer wood that allows you to climb to the top. Although the names of particular architects or personalities who built or lived in this tower have disappeared in history and remain unknown to us, we feel their presence in every stone. Even if we don't know their names, their work here is still alive. This tower witnessed many human destinies, even though it did not give us their particular stories.

Her role has changed dramatically over the centuries, which is a fascinating way of changing. In the sixteenth and seventh centuries, the tower served a completely different purpose - it was a waterworks. Imagine how in this space, which was once a strategic point for defense, there were completely different scenes that were linked to the daily life and needs of the city. However, another fundamental change followed, which gave the tower its second important name. After 1757, a powder warehouse was moved to the tower. Since then, the tower has started to call the people in the neighborhood the Laundry Room. This name carries within it a breath of danger and tension. Think of the tower as a place where there was a force that could change history in one moment, and where the highest level of caution had to be. From a place that protected life as part of the castle, it became a place that in itself posed potential danger.

This constant transformation, from the point of defense to the waterworks and the explosives store to today's form, is what makes the Zalak bastion so special. It's a story about adaptation, about survival and how humanity's needs change along with time. After reconstruction in 2006, the tower was reborn in a new form. It is no longer a warehouse of dust or water, but a view that offers people the beauty of the view and a quiet moment in the sky.
