The Zámeček Rudolfov is located in the lower, western part of the city of Rudolfova in the district of České Budějovice, approximately four kilometres east of the administrative centre. It is bound by the golden age of the upper town, founded in 1585 on the basis of the charter issued by Emperor Rudolf II. The city gained the status of a free royal upper town with extensive privileges, because it prospered thanks to the mining of silver, which has been going on in the region since the 14th century.

The chateau itself was built in 1590 by one of the most important local miners and entrepreneurs Jan Hőlzl ze Sternsteinu - the building was known as Hőlzl's house. Hőlzl, however, kept his property for a long time and sold it to Bohuslav Malovka of Malovice. After Bohuslav's death in 1608, there was one of his four sons, also named John. But he was unlucky - when the state uprising broke out in 1618, Rudolfov was not safe and Jan Malovec resorted to another estate.

The chateau became a staff of the Stavov army, which since November 1618 was located in the area. But soon came defeat. In June 1619, Spanish Colonel Baltasar de Marradas brought his troops to the aid of imperial troops. The Allied army Rudolfov conquered and plundered. Marradas, who later reached the rank of general and later the marshal, became the holder of the chateau as a confiscate after the defeat of Czech states. Under his leadership came the first major reconstruction after 1620.

When Marradas died, he inherited his brother Bartholomew family estate. In 1661, however, they were sold to Prince Jan Adolf I of Schwarzenberg, which passed through the chateau into the hands of a mighty nobility. In the 18th century, the surrounding areas were used militarily - artillery depots were created on the old upper shafts. In 1768, the chateau was rented by senior officer František Oldřich Prince Kinský of Vchynic. Since then he served the army - first Austrian, later Czechoslovak - until the early 1990s.

The chateau consists of a storey building with a square plan, covered with a valb roof with remains of an ancient gazebo in the middle. The main south-facing facade has been classicically modified in the past; as well as windows and doors from the period of classicism. On the ground floor there is a central space covered by a valened vault with characteristic sections and a net of nails.

After the end of military use, the manor became private property. Since February 2023 it belongs to LEKA DEM s. r. o., based in České Budějovice. There are several private companies in the area, but the chateau itself is not accessible to the public. Despite this, it remains an architectural and historical witness to the turbulent years of Czech history as well as to the famous Rudolfov as a visible upper town.

Welcome to Rudolfov, this quiet and charming corner of South Bohemia. Right now you're standing in front of a place that holds hundreds of years of history in a place where the ambitions of the nobles, military strategy, and the everyday life of the inhabitants of this picturesque city were met. The Rudolfov Chateau stands before you, a building that is a silent witness to the ups and downs of this area. Stop for a moment, take a breath and feel the atmosphere of this place. You're standing in the lower part of town, a place that once formed the heart of social and administrative life. Take a look at the overall shape of the building, perceive its radiation and imagine what this place looked like centuries ago when Rudolfov was at the time of its greatest bloom.

To understand why this chateau is even standing here, we need to go back more than 400 years in time. It all started in 1585 when the city of Rudolfov itself was founded. It was a period of great change and expansion when new mansions were created and new development options were sought. Only five years later, in 1590, Jan Hőlzl ze Sternsteinu built this mansion. At that time the chateau was not seen as a monumental palace, as we know of the great cities, but rather as a representative house, which in the period environment was called Hőlzl's house. Jan Hőlzl did not only build his living here, but created a centre of power and administration in a flourishing upper town. Imagine then the enthusiasm for construction, the sound of hammers and carpentry tools, which sounded the streets of the newly emerging Rudolfova.

Now let's focus on the architecture itself. The chateau was built in the original design in Renaissance style, which was at that time a symbol of modernity, reason and return to the values of the ancient. Although the construction has undergone several reconstructions and modifications over the centuries, it still carries the spirit of that time. Look at the facade of the building and see its proportions. The Renaissance emphasized harmony and balance, which is reflected in the overall impression that the chateau gives you. Note how the building fits into the surrounding landscape and how it defines the lower part of the city. Today, the entire object is protected as a cultural monument, which means that every stone and every wall has its value and tells its own story. Although we do not know the names of the particular architects who drew the plans, their work has survived for centuries and allows us to see the world of the 16th century today.

But the history of this place is not just about quiet living and architecture. The chateau was often at the heart of dramatic events throughout history. Let us move on to the beginning of the seventeenth century, until the clouds of future conflict began to withdraw over the Czech countries. In 1618, in a year that changed the fate of millions of people, the state army stopped here. Imagine that in this very place where there is now peace, there was a military headquarters. The streets were full of riders, armaments and strategic meetings. The chateau stopped being just a home and became a military center where the fate of the region was decided.

Only a year later, in 1619, came one of the darkest moments in the history of this mansion. The chateau was conquered and ransacked. In this brutal way, Spanish Colonel Baltasar de Marradas y Vich has succeeded. Imagine the contrast - the elegant Renaissance mansion became the prey of a victorious army in no time. Baltasar de Marradas, however, did not just remain a conqueror, but subsequently became the owner of this estate. With it came a different influence, a different culture and a different approach to power. In later times, names of other personalities, such as Bohuslav Malovec z Malovic, joined the site. Each of these men put his own trail in the chateau, whether it was modifications to the building or the way they managed their subjects.

Now, I want to take you to one interesting thing that may not be visible at first sight, but that carries a fascinating secret. If you look around the chateau, remember that this area has been closely linked to mining in the past. There was a very unusual use of the terrain in the eighteenth century. It was on the old top shafts that were located near the chateau that artillery positions were built. It's fascinating to think how the functions of this place have changed. First, people were looking for wealth in the depths of the earth, then there was a luxury house, and finally, these shafts became strategic defensive sites. This layer of history recalls that Rudolfov was not just an idyllic town, but a place that had to respond to the needs of its time, whether it was an economy or security.

When you stand in front of a chateau today, see it as a book whose pages are made of stone and mortar. From the founding of the city in 1585 to the ambitions of John Hőlzl, to the military marches of the state troops, to the Spanish trail of Baltasar de Marradasa, to the eighteenth century with its artillery. All of these events happened right here at this point in the map. Zámeček Rudolfov is not just a building, it is a monument to human effort, power, fighting and survival.

Now that you know the stories that lurk in these walls, I suggest you take a look around. Look around, see the facade details, and try to imagine what kind of interviews were held in these premises four years ago. You may hear echoes of Spanish orders or the whispers of Renaissance courtiers. Let yourself be guided by your imagination and enjoy the peace of this place, which no one now fills or controls with the power of weapons, but which welcomes every visitor with its silent history.

Thank you for joining me on this short journey in time. I hope this view of the chateau Rudolfov helped you better understand its meaning and beauty. Now it's time for your own discovery. Explore the rest of the city, go to other sights and be enchanted by the magic of South Bohemia. I wish you a pleasant rest of the day and an inspirational walk along the paths of history. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the chateau Rudolfov is spring or autumn, when the weather in South Bohemia is the most stable and the landscape around the city Rudolfov takes the most beautiful colors. There are also fewer tourists in these periods than in summer holidays, which allows a more peaceful tour of the historical area and its surroundings.

Transport availability is ensured both by car and public transport. If you arrive by car, we recommend you search for parking places close to the city center Rudolfov, which are usually marked. It is best for passengers by public transport to check the current connections and timetables in the search engine as the lines can be changed according to the season.

Take comfortable shoes with you to the chateau and its surroundings, as you will move on historic paving and perhaps even down a slight slope in the lower part of the city. We recommend you also take drinks and light refreshments, so that you have energy to walk around the city and the surrounding area.

For photography is ideal morning or late afternoon light, which highlights the Renaissance elements of the building built in 1590. The best views of the chateau can be obtained from the surrounding streets and from places where the view of the lower part of the city is opened. Observe shadows and contrasts that give images depth and historical atmosphere.

Since there are no specific places in the area in the background, we recommend exploring the historical centre Rudolfova, which is only a short walk away from the chateau. The city offers many historical monuments and the atmosphere of the upper city, which is associated with the time of the greatest bloom. It is advisable for families with children to plan a shorter tour and use the surrounding area to relax and play.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the chateau will be surrounded by awakening nature and fresh greenery, which gives the whole area a vital feel. The lighting is delicate and ideal for observing flowering gardens during this period. We recommend wearing layered clothes because the weather is usually variable, and set off in the morning, when the surrounding atmosphere is quieter.

Summer months bring with them a full bloom of parks and intense sun, which highlights the details of the facade. The atmosphere is playful and energetic, typical of the main holiday season. Due to the expected crowds of visitors, it is best to come first thing in the morning in light summer clothes and not forget enough fluids.

Autumn around Rudolfova transforms into a sea of gold and red colors, while morning fog gives the memory a mysterious and melancholy character. The light is golden and warm at this time, which creates a very romantic environment. It is practical to choose waterproof shoes for walks in leaves and plan a visit until the afternoon when there are fewer people on the premises.

In winter, the chateau acts calmly and graciously, especially if it is covered by a layer of snow and freezing air. The atmosphere is quiet and intimate, which is especially obvious in advent time. It is necessary to take very warm clothes and to check the opening times which are significantly shorter in this season.
