Zámeček Vranová Lhota is a Renaissance manor house located in the village of Vranová Lhota, Pardubický kraj. Originally built as a fortress after the destruction of nearby Hrad Vraní hora during Markrabě Jošt Lucemburský's military campaign in 1389, it has undergone several transformations over the centuries. First documented in 1406, the structure was abandoned and likely destroyed during the Hussite Wars by 1497. It later evolved into a Renaissance chateau under Jan Adam I. z Lichtenštejna in 1698. This site is notable for its rich history of ownership changes and architectural evolution, reflecting broader cultural shifts from medieval to Renaissance Europe.

The origins of Zámeček Vranová Lhota are rooted in the turbulent late medieval period when Bohemia faced political instability and military conflicts, including the Hussite Wars. The fortress was initially built after 1389 following the destruction of Hrad Vraní hora by Markrabě Jošt Lucemburský. Historical records first mention the fortress in 1406, indicating its early significance as a strategic asset. By 1497, during the Hussite Wars, it had been described as abandoned and likely destroyed, marking an end to its initial phase.

Architecturally, Zámeček Vranová Lhota has undergone significant transformations. Initially constructed as a fortress with robust defensive features, it was later rebuilt and expanded in the late 15th century, acquiring early Renaissance characteristics by the 16th century. The chateau's current Renaissance style emerged from renovations undertaken by Jan Adam I. z Lichtenštejna in 1698. This two-winged structure is built with mixed masonry and features gabled roofs arranged in a T-shape. Its southern façade is divided into five window axes, while the basement contains barrel vaults.

Ownership of Zámeček Vranová Lhota has changed hands multiple times throughout its history. Initially held by the Páni z Vildenberka from 1406, it was later given as collateral to King Zikmund and subsequently King Vladislav Jagellonský in 1425 and 1497, respectively. The Lhotští ze Ptení family owned it between 1507 and 1516, followed by the Drahanovští z Pěnčína in the 17th century. In 1698, Jan Adam I. z Lichtenštejna transformed it into a Renaissance chateau. The Libštejnský z Kolovrat family acquired it in 1714, and from 1874 onwards, it was part of the Thurn-Taxis estate. After World War II, the chateau served cultural needs until Ivana Přibylová purchased it in 1999.

Throughout its history, Zámeček Vranová Lhota has witnessed significant events and transformations. The destruction of nearby Hrad Vraní hora in 1389 set the stage for its construction as a fortress. Its abandonment during the Hussite Wars marked a period of decline, only to be revived later as a Renaissance chateau by Jan Adam I. z Lichtenštejna in 1698. Following the Velvet Revolution, Ivana Přibylová acquired the property and has been restoring it with community support. Plans are underway to open a puppet museum, theater hall, and restaurant within its walls.

Today, Zámeček Vranová Lhota stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural evolution of the region. It is accessible to visitors interested in exploring its rich history and unique architecture. The chateau's ongoing restoration efforts highlight its significance as a cultural heritage site. Its planned developments promise new attractions that will enhance its appeal, making it a worthwhile destination for those keen on experiencing a blend of historical intrigue and modern amenities.

Zámeček Vranová Lhota offers a fascinating glimpse into the past while continuing to evolve in the present. Its storied history and architectural beauty make it an essential visit for anyone interested in exploring the layers of Bohemian heritage. Whether you are drawn by its Renaissance charm or intrigued by its historical transformations, this chateau invites you to step back in time and discover a piece of Czech history.

The Renaissance chateau in Vranová Lhota in the Pardubice region grew out of a fortress. Since 1990, it has been protected as a cultural monument.

The fortress was built after the nearby castle of Vraní hora fell in 1389 during a military campaign by Margrave Jošt of Luxembourg. Jošt confiscated the estates, but due to financial difficulties, he had to pawn the fortress frequently. The first written mention dates from 1406, when the lords from Vildenberka acquired it as a pledge. In 1425, King Zikmund of Luxembourg pawned the estate. When in 1497 King Vladislav Jagellonský confirmed the pledge documents given by Zikmund to Jiří from Lhota, it is already mentioned as abandoned. It was probably destroyed during the Hussite Wars.

Who rebuilt and extended the fortress is uncertain. It was most likely the Lhotští from Ptení, who held Vranová Lhota between 1507 and 1516. The fortress then received two new wings and a defensive moat. However, research from the 1980s showed that it was an early Gothic building from the end of the fifteenth century. Through renovation, it acquired an early Renaissance appearance and was further expanded in the Baroque period.

At the end of the sixteenth century, the fortress underwent another reconstruction, most likely under Dětřich Lhotský from Ptení or Jan Kobylka from Kobylí. In the seventeenth century, it was owned by the Drahanovský family from Pěnčína. In 1698, Jan Adam First from Liechtenstein converted it into a chateau. In 1714, the Libštejnský family from Kolovrat attached Vranová Lhota to the Biskupice estates, and the residence then served only as a farm court. From 1874, the chateau belonged to the Thurn-Taxis family.

After the Second World War, the chateau was confiscated. It served the cultural needs of the community and later a local collective farm. After the Velvet Revolution, the community sold it to the Tramaz company. In December 1999, Ivana Přibylová purchased the building, and with the help of grants, has been gradually restoring it. The community Mnoho světů from Jilemnice contributed to the restoration work in 2016 and 2017. The owner intends to open a puppet museum, a theater hall, and a restaurant in the chateau.

The chateau is a two-wing building of mixed masonry with hip roofs, with a floor plan resembling the letter T. Both two-story wings are remnants of the original fortress. The south facade is divided by five window axes, and the cellars have barrel vaults.
