Zámek Biskupice u Jevíčka is a baroque castle located in the village of Biskupice, about 4 km northeast of Jevíčko. Originally built on the site of a medieval fortress at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, it was reconstructed into its current form by Zikmund Leopold Sak z Bohuňovic in 1713. The castle features an elegant baroque façade with a central risalit flanked by pilasters and topped by a decorative gable. It is surrounded by a neglected park that once showcased French-style landscaping. This monument stands as a testament to the architectural evolution from medieval fortifications to baroque elegance, reflecting significant historical transitions in ownership and cultural influences.

The origins of Zámek Biskupice u Jevíčka trace back to a medieval fortress first mentioned in 1614 when Jaroslav Drahanovský acquired it. The site was initially part of the Olomouc bishopric's holdings, documented as early as 1262. By the late 17th century, the original fortress had fallen into disrepair. In response to this decline and cultural shifts at the time, Zikmund Leopold Sak z Bohuňovic initiated a transformation at the beginning of the 18th century. This period was marked by significant changes in Europe, with the Baroque style flourishing amidst post-war reconstruction efforts and a Catholic resurgence following the Thirty Years' War.

Architecturally, the castle underwent substantial modifications to embody the baroque aesthetic. Completed in 1713, Zámek Biskupice u Jevíčka features an elegant façade characterized by a central risalit with pilasters and a decorative gable. The structure is oblong in plan, with eleven window axes on its façade. A kordonová římsa separates the ground floor from the upper level, while pronounced over-window cornices add to the building's grandeur. Originally surrounded by an ornate park designed in French style, the castle exemplifies baroque principles of symmetry and elaborate decoration.

Ownership of Zámek Biskupice u Jevíčka has changed hands several times throughout its history. After Jaroslav Drahanovský acquired it in 1614, the site was transformed by Zikmund Leopold Sak z Bohuňovic into a baroque castle in 1713. That same year, Vilém Vojtěch Libštejnský z Kolovrat purchased both the estate and the castle. In 1874, ownership transferred to the Thurn-Taxis family, who maintained it until its confiscation in 1945. These transitions reflect broader historical currents, including religious shifts and political upheavals.

Several key events have marked the history of Zámek Biskupice u Jevíčka. The initial acquisition by Jaroslav Drahanovský in 1614 set the stage for its transformation into a baroque castle under Zikmund Leopold Sak z Bohuňovic's direction in 1713. Later, the estate's sale to the Thurn-Taxis family in 1874 marked another significant change before its confiscation in 1945. Despite these historical milestones, the castle has faced challenges in recent years, particularly concerning preservation and ownership.

Today, Zámek Biskupice u Jevíčka stands as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, though it faces ongoing deterioration. Partial repairs were made in 1966, but since its sale to a private owner in 2014, efforts to restore the castle have stalled. The surrounding park, once an example of French-style landscaping with rare trees, is now neglected and uncared for. Despite these challenges, the castle remains a site of historical interest, offering insights into baroque architecture and the region's past.

Zámek Biskupice u Jevíčka holds significant cultural value as a representation of architectural evolution and historical transitions in ownership. Its preservation offers a window into the past, showcasing the influence of baroque design and the complex history of its owners. Visitors are invited to explore this monument, appreciating its historical significance and contemplating the efforts needed to preserve such an important piece of heritage for future generations.

Biskupice is located approximately four kilometers northeast of Jevíčko in the Svitavy district. The village is first mentioned in 1262 as property of the Olomouc bishopric. On a hillside at the edge of the village stands a Baroque castle, which is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The castle was preceded by a fortified house, built sometime around the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It is first explicitly mentioned in 1614. At that time, Jaroslav Drahanovský z Pěnčína bought it along with the estate and had it registered in the land registers. After the Battle of White Mountain, he escaped confiscation only because he promptly converted to the Catholic faith and generously supported the Catholic Church. By the end of the seventeenth century, the fortified house was already considerably dilapidated.

At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the then owner of the estate, Zikmund Leopold Sak z Bohuňovic, began to build a simple three-winged Baroque castle on the site of the medieval fortified house. It was completed in 1713 and was surrounded by a large ornamental garden in French style. In the same year, Count Vilém Vojtěch Libštejnský z Kolovrat purchased Biskupice together with the castle. In 1874, the large estate including the castle passed to the Thurn-Taxis family. They held it until 1945, when the property was confiscated.

The castle is single-storied and has a rectangular ground plan. Its facade has eleven window axes. In the center, a three-axis risalit projects forward, that is, a slightly protruding part of the facade, decorated with pilasters. Above it rises a Baroque gable adorned with cones. The ground floor is separated from the upper floor by a horizontal cordon molding, and the ground floor windows have prominent window lintels.

In 1966, the castle was partially repaired. Later, the village sold it to a private owner for less than two million crowns. He initially began repairs, but soon abandoned his efforts, and the castle has been relentlessly deteriorating ever since. In June 2014, the owner attempted to sell it for 14.5 million crowns, but was unsuccessful. In 2023, he raised the price to 48 million crowns.

The park around the castle was originally laid out in French style. Today it is neglected and poorly maintained, yet some rare trees still grow in it.
