The chateau Nový Dvůr is located in a small village of the same name, which is a local part of the village of Stone in the district of Pelhřimov. Since 1963, the building has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The story of the place begins much before the chateau itself. In its place there was originally only a mere village yard, which belonged to the larger farmhouse of Proseč near Pošné. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the owners gradually changed here - first Pötting ruled, then from 1803 he took over the farm František Vernier and four years later Karel Buttler.

The turning point came in 1810 when I became taken Ferdinand Scherer from Neuhofsthal. He made an ambitious decision - not only did he set up a mill here, which he was planning as an innovative business, but at the same time he had the old economic building rebuilt into an elegant Empire chateau. It seemed to be a sign of ascension, but reality was more complex.

In 1815, at the time when the chateau was to be completed and when the project may have seemed to flourish, it was hit by a disaster. Ferdinand Scherера's financial problems were so serious that he was forced to sell the largest farm - December. At least he kept the new farm Nový Dvůr. But tragedy continued: the debt was too deep. In 1819 Scherer found himself in bankruptcy and his property went into forced administration.

In 1830 the estate was bought by Friedrich Antonín Pilz, which started a long series of different owners. The most famous of them was Volfgang Jelínek, which acquired it in 1863. Later, it was taken by Mr and Mrs Rožánková, then settled in 1907 by Mr and Mrs Glasser. A number of other owners gradually took turns, until 1948, when the communist state seized the estate. It took half a century to destroy it. Only after 1989, in low waves of restitution, did he return to the descendants of the original owners.

Architecturally, it is a single-storey structure on a rectangular plan dominated by a central risalite culminated by a triangular shield. It adorns the original element - the relief picture of the pair of Grácias along with the Scherera family emblem. From this shield rises a small lid with onion and clock, a detail of tipsy for Empire style. The vaults have been preserved on the ground floor, while flat ceilings prevail on the floor.

The chateau is a tough case today. Years of neglect since 1948 has made it very decrepit. It stands as a silent testimony of townspeople 'dreams, business ambitions and political upheavals that examined and released the Czech landscape.

The building has a rectangular plan, central risalite with a triangular shield with relief decoration from V. Prachnera and relief of a pair of Gratia with a Scherers character. Above the shield is a lid with onions and clocks. On the ground floor, the vaults were preserved while the ceilings were already flat on the floors.

Nový Dvůr Castle stands in the village of the same name, which is a local part of the municipality of Kámen in the Pelhřimov district. As a cultural monument, it has been protected since 1963.

On the site of today's village originally stood a farm courtyard. It belonged to the Proseč estate near Pošná, which is also referred to simply as Pošná. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the courtyard was owned by the Pöttingers. From 1803 it was held by František Vernier and from 1807 by Karel Buttler. Three years later, Ferdinand Scherer from Neuhofsthalu bought it from him. There was no manor house standing there at that time.

Ferdinand Scherer decided to build a spinning mill near the courtyard. In connection with this, part of the courtyard was converted into an Empire style castle. However, Scherer was struggling with debts. In 1815 he had to sell the Proseč estate, but he kept the newly created Nový Dvůr estate. However, he did not hold onto it for long. The debts continued, and so in 1819 he ended up in bankruptcy and the estate came under forced administration.

In 1830 the estate was bought by Friedrich Antonín Pilz. After that, a whole series of owners succeeded one another, until in 1863 it was acquired by Volfgang Jelínek. Later it belonged to the Rožánek couple and from 1907 to the Glasser couple. After them came other owners, until after 1948 the state confiscated the castle. After 1989 it was returned to descendants of the original owners in restitution. Because the building was not maintained after 1948, today the small castle is quite dilapidated.

The castle is a single-storey building on a rectangular floor plan. From the centre of the building rises a risalit topped with a triangular gable. In the gable is a relief of two Graces with the Scherer coat of arms. Above the gable rises a small tower with a bulbous cupola and a clock. The ground floor has preserved barrel vaults, while the upper floor has flat ceilings.

Tips for visitors

To visit the ruins of the chateau Nový Dvůr it is best to choose spring or autumn months when the surrounding vegetation does not obstruct the view and the area has a unique character due to its atmosphere of abandoned place. In summer, the building is overgrown with lush greenery, which adds to romance, but makes clarity worse.

Transport to the village Nový Dvůr, which is the local part of the village Stone in the district Pelhřimov, is the most comfortable personal car. The location is also available by public transport, check the current connection in the local connection search engine.

As this is a decrepit monument and ruin, bring with you the fixed shoes necessary to move around the building. We also recommend suitable outdoor clothes and repellent, especially in warmer months. Don't forget to bring enough drinking water and snacks, because you will find no facilities for visitors in the chateau area.

For photography lovers, the ruins of the Nový Dvůr chateau offer great shots of industrial and historical melancholy, especially in the morning or late afternoon light, when the sun's rays create interesting shadows in the crumbling walls. Photograph with respect to unstable construction and do not enter enclosed or dangerous parts of the building.

In the wider area within 30 minutes there is a village of Stone, under which Nový Dvůr fell, and other interesting places in the picturesque landscape of Vysočina Region, which is worth exploring while you wandered there.

For kids

Imagine going back 211 years to when the world was different, and even the chateau Nový Dvůr had a different face. That's when something new was awakened to be called Classicism.

It was like a game where you build a house, but this was real! In 1815, when the chateau was built, the Czech Republic was still young, and Nový Dvůr was the only seat of a rich nobleman. This man, by the name of the Count, wanted to have the largest and most beautiful house in town so he could proudly present himself in front of the others.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring on the ruins of the chateau Nový Dvůr in the region Highlands bring about an awakening nature, with surrounding forests and meadows playing all shades of green and occasional spring showers providing dramatic shine to the old walls. Lighting is very variable thanks to the bright sun and rapidly changing clouds, which will be especially appreciated by lovers of contrast landscape photography. There are almost no crowds in this period, so you will enjoy the tour in complete peace. Due to the muddy terrain and moisture in exposed areas, choose fixed waterproof shoes and laminated clothing with windbreaker. The best time to visit is in the morning, when morning fog slowly retreats to spring rays.

Summer in Nový Dvořa is dominated by lush vegetation, which sometimes grows into the surrounding walls and thus creates a romantic atmosphere of fairy tale sanctuary in the middle of the wilderness. The lighting is very sharp during noon, but late afternoon and evenings offer long, golden clocks ideal for pictures of shining shutters and arches. While the main summer season attracts a little more curiosity, it is still a calmer target compared to the famous chateau complexes. We recommend wearing light, breathable clothes, but do not forget the headgear and effective repellent against ticks and insects. The best time to arrive is early in the morning or late in the evening, avoiding the biggest heat of the day.

Autumn turns the surroundings of the chateau ruin into a colourful palette full of ochre, red and brown tones, which together with the fallen leaves lying on the stone tile floor create a melancholy mood. The low autumn sun and frequent fog cover the building's torso into a mysterious haze that excites every fan of mysterious aesthetics. Visiting is minimal these months, so you'll probably have the premises to yourself. For a successful expedition it is necessary to choose warm, waterproof clothes, gloves and mainly solid tourist shoes with anti-slip sole on wet fallen leaves. The best time of day is noon, when the sunlight passes through the cold air for a while.

Winter gives the New Court a tough, mystical face, when snowy remnants of walls and frozen surrounding meadows in the Vysočina Region create a quiet, freezing scenery. The sun seldom appears and the early twilight casts in memory of the long, cold shadows that underline the abandonment of the whole place. You will meet tourists here only exceptionally at this time, which guarantees absolute concentration and peace of mind. The base of the kit is quality winter clothes for freezing, thermo-linens, hat, scarf and solid snow. The best time to visit is around noon, when the outdoor temperature is highest and daylight reaches its maximum because the monument does not have permanent administration with artificial lighting of interiors.
