In front of you now are the foundations, the stony outlines, which in grass and earth resemble the silent print of the building that has dominated the landscape for centuries. It is a strange feeling that a state in a place where once the life of a noble residence was boiling, and today only to perceive peace and emptiness. Yet, if you engage your imagination, these remnants of the foundations will tell you a fascinating story about the rise and fall of one of the local monuments.

Let us return together in time deep into the past, until the mid-fifteenth century. Imagine this space in the year of these four hundred sixty-one. It was this year that the House of Šlik, a powerful noble family, founded the original Gothic building. At that time the chateau was not only a place for rest, but above all a symbol of power, security and control over the surrounding territory. The Gothic architecture was strict, with emphasis on vertical and defensive elements. Šlikové built a solid base here, which was intended to serve as their administrative centre and safe harbor. Now, if you look at the distribution of the remaining foundations, try to imagine those massive walls, narrow windows and steep roofs that once protruded into the sky in this place. It was a time of knights and chateaux when every building had to be prepared for the unexpected twists of history.

But time passes, and with it the needs of the people who lived here changed. A few decades later, in the year one thousand five hundred forty-five, the fates of Valdov Chateau changed. The building was acquired by Jiří Multz z Wallhofu. With his arrival came a new era and with it a new architectural spirit. The Renaissance brought humanity, light and desire for beauty to architecture. Jiří Multz had the chateau remodeled renaissance, which meant that the original Gothic fortress became a representative residence. Notice in your mind how the chateau space has expanded. It was during this period that the object was extended by a new wing which gave it a new dimension and elegance. Imagine the wide windows through which the sun fell into the spacious halls, and the inner yards where the nobles met and social events took place. The chateau was no longer about defense, but about representation, about art and about comfort.

Now pay attention to the next layer of history that has come to this place. The Valdov Chateau was constantly breathing and changing. The last great architectural change came much later, in the year one thousand eight hundred and three. At that time the chateau was reformatted into a baroque style. The Baroque with its excess, dynamic and rich decoration gave the construction the last peak of its bloom. Even though today we see no stucco ornaments or decorated portals, we know that at that time zámek Valdov was a symbol of the elegance and wealth of its owners. The Baroque reconstruction has united the previous styles into a magnificent whole, which seemed majestic in the village Lesná.

When you pass these foundations today, you might wonder how it happened that such an important structure, which survived Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque, does not exist today. The answer leads us to recent history. After World War II, nine hundred forty-five years ago, the chateau was transferred to state property. That was the beginning of a long and sad process of decline. The government used the chateau for various practical purposes, but lacked the care that this rare monument deserved. The building gradually faded, the walls burst and the roofs fell. The highlight of this process was the year of a thousand and nine hundred and ninety, when the dismantling of the building itself began. What used to protect people and represent power was gradually carried away until there was only this silent trace left in the country.

There's something deeply symbolic about it. You are standing in a place where three great epochs of European architecture collided. Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque have left their mark, although today this trail is almost invisible. It is a reminder of how fleeting human ambition is and how powerful the power of time is. Today, Valdov Chateau's mystery lies not in secret passages or hidden treasures, but in how silence can tell stories better than noisy walls. If you look at the stones in the ground, try to perceive the atmosphere of this place. Can you feel the contrast between the former magnificence and today's peace?
