By 1343, Oldřich III. z Hradce held Žirovnice, passing it to his son Oldřich IV., before it transitioned to the Páni z Ústí sometime before 1371.

The most extensive renovations occurred under Václav Vencelík z Vrchovišť in the early 15th century, who commissioned large frescoes that remain largely intact today. Albrecht z Gutštejna continued these renovations in 1544, while later Baroque reconstructions were implemented by the Šternberkové family in the 17th century.

Ownership of Zámek Žirovnice has seen a series of notable figures over its history. After the Páni z Ústí, Jan Kamarét z Lukavce acquired it in 1393 and adopted the title of Žirovnice. His widow later sold it to Václav Vencelík z Vrchovišť on behalf of her minor sons. The chateau then passed through several hands, including Albrecht z Gutštejna and Jáchym z Hradce in 1564, before eventually coming under the Šternberkové family's control in 1693. Each owner contributed to its architectural evolution and historical narrative.

Key events at Zámek Žirovnice include a significant siege by Imperial forces in 1646 during which it sustained considerable damage. In 1910, the chateau was sold to the town of Žirovnice, marking another pivotal moment in its history. The chateau's resilience is evident as it survived a fire in 1964 and underwent extensive restoration starting in 1974, culminating in the late 20th century.
