The Ždánov is a chateau located in an equal village in the Domažlice district in the Pilsen region. Its construction was initiated by the Order of St. Augustine, which built it between 1728 and 1731. The builders were augustinians from the Pivoňská monastery and their aim was to create a functional summer residence for guests and background for monastic officials. The order belonged to the construction until 1787 when the convention was abolished.

After the end of the convention, the owner changed. First he managed the chateau religious fund, in 1800 he was bought by Prague lawyer Leonard Stöhr. In the subsequent decades, ownership rights were changed repeatedly - in 1838 the owner of the factory Antonín Pangratz belonged to the owner, five years later he was purchased by Leopold Thun-Hohenstein, which incorporated him into the substation estate. In 1864, the family raked from Coudenhove took possession and maintained it until the twentieth century. Until its end, white stoneware was produced in the chateau yard, which means its industrial use.

After World War II, the chateau became the seat of a local single agricultural cooperative. From 1961 to 1962 the cooperative adapted the objects for cultural purposes, thus trying to provide a new mission. However, after 1990, its construction required attention - the chateau gradually fades. It was only in 2019 that at least a partial repair of the roof was carried out which stabilised the state of the building.

Architecturally belongs to the Ždánov period of the Baroque. It is a one-story building with a rectangular plan. Its entrance facade is decorated with a semi-circular portal with archivolta and a cracked segment shield in the middle of which the coat of arms was placed. The facade breaks the ledge separating the ground floor from the first floor. The windows on the floor have characteristic corrugated roofing mantelpiece. The internal priestor of the ground rooms is carried out with cross and valence vaults, which is indicative of the care the original builders gave to the construction.

The protected area includes two preserved buildings of former stables. The northern side of the court was defined by the ornamental French garden, which strengthens the idea of the representative character of the building from the time of its creation. The whole complex is today protected as a cultural monument, which makes it one of the objects worthy of care and protection. Ždánov thus represents the tipid transformation of the noble architecture of the 18th century from spiritual originators to several generations of worldly owners to socialist use, illustrating more than 200 years of Czech history in one place.

Ždánov is a Baroque manor house in the village of the same name in the Domažlice district in the Plzeň region. It was built between 1728 and 1731 by Augustinians from the Pivonín monastery, and remained theirs until 1787. The entire manor complex is protected today as a cultural monument.

During the time of the Augustinians, the manor served as a summer residence for guests and as a base for officials of the local court. After the convent was dissolved in 1787, a religious fund took over the management of the court. In 1800, a Prague lawyer named Leonard Stöhr bought it from them. In 1838, the court with the manor belonged to a factory owner Antonín Pangrats. Five years later, in 1843, Leopold Thun-Hohenstein purchased the estate along with the village and attached it to the Poběžovice estate.

In 1864, the entire Poběžovice large estate was acquired by the family of the counts from Coudenhove and remained theirs until the twentieth century. White glazed earthenware was produced in the manor court until the end of the nineteenth century.

After the Second World War, the manor was used by the local unified agricultural cooperative. Between 1961 and 1962, they adapted it for cultural purposes. However, after 1990, the building fell into disrepair. It received a renovated roof only in 2019.

The manor is a single-story building with a rectangular floor plan. The main facade is dominated by a semicircular portal with an archivolt, which is a decorative arch framing the entrance. The portal is crowned by a broken segmental pediment with a coat of arms in its center. A cornice separates the facade between the ground floor and the upper story. The windows on the upper floor are decorated with wavy roof-like window cornices. The rooms on the ground floor are vaulted with cross and barrel vaults.

The protected complex also includes two preserved farm buildings. A decorative French garden adjoined the court from the north side.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late spring or early autumn, when the surrounding landscape is the most photogenic and the state of the building, which is unfortunately bad, is not overshadowed by lush vegetation.

The village Ždánov is the easiest to reach by its own car. Public transport is possible, but we recommend to check the current connection in the respective search engine before the trip.

Due to the poor state of the monument we recommend fixed shoes and suitable clothing for the field. Don't forget to pack enough drinks and snacks, because there may be no catering service available in the immediate vicinity.

Use soft light during the golden watch to photograph the Baroque architecture of the chateau, i.e. shortly after sunrise or before sunset, which will highlight the details of the facade.

In the vicinity you can visit the town of Pupuvovice, to which the farm has been connected in the past. For families with children the trip is more suitable as a short stop on the way to explore the history of the region.

For kids

About 298 years ago, the small village of Ždánov began to build a stunning chateau as if it were worth telling a story about. It was built until 1731 and its creators wanted to create a place full of beauty and mystery. The chateau was like a great spell that appeared from one day to another to welcome guests and officials of the order of St. Augustine.

Themed route

1. Pukovice, city: Start in this city, which in the nineteenth century was historically connected with the local estate. 2. Ždánov (chateau) , monument: The main destination of the trip, which represents the most important point of the entire route. 3. Ždánov, village: Walk around the village allows you to explore the area of the chateau better.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring, the monument awakens along with the surrounding vegetation, which begins to green and surround the decrepit object. The light is delicate and ideal for capturing the details of a crumbling building in a new recovery. We recommend choosing layered clothes because the morning cold alternates with afternoon heat, and visit the place when nature is freshest but still without summer crowds.

Summer: Summer season brings to Ždánova intense sunlight and dense, dark green vegetation that can partially hide the site. The atmosphere is hot and dry, which may highlight the feeling of abandonment. Due to the high temperatures and possible increased interest of visitors, it is best to arrive immediately after opening, with a headgear and enough fluids to handle walking in the field.

Autumn: Autumn moons offer the most melancholy atmosphere, when the fog often flows directly to ruins and leaf colors create contrast with a grey stone. The golden light of the autumn sun gives the memory a special depth. It is necessary to take waterproof shoes for wet soil and choose the morning hours when the light is most stable and the weather is least unpredictable.

Winter: In winter time, the monument is revealed in all its cruelties, because without leaves all lines of crumbling architecture can be seen. The atmosphere is quiet, freezing and often quieter than at other times. Due to the risk of slippery roads and low temperatures, it is necessary to select very warm and durable clothing and fixed shoes, with a very short day and limited visibility.
