The Tanvald-Harrachov railway line, also known as the Jizerskohorska or Jizera railway, is a unique regional monument in the Liberec Region. This 38,2 km long line consists of the Liberec-Tanvald section and the Tanvald-Harrachov gear section. The tooth section is one of the last normal-breaking railway lines in Europe and the steepest track in the Czech Republic, making it a cultural heritage. The route was built in order to link Austria-Hungary to Prussia and was of strategic importance for connecting existing lines.

The history of the track dates back to the 19th century, when the section from Liberec to Jablonec nad Nisou was opened in 1888 and the continuation of the line from Jablonec nad Nisou to Tanvald opened in 1894. The Ozubnik section was built to connect the existing line Liberec - Tanvald and Železný Brod - Tanvald with the planned line Jelenia Góra - Kořenov, which was intended to link Austria-Hungary to Prussia. On 30 June 1902 the extension of the line from Tanvald to Kořenov was opened and on 1 November 1902 the line was connected to the German Railways. After World War II, significant changes occurred when cross-border traffic was shut down and the territory occupied by Poland.

The Tanvald-Harrachov line is one of the last normal-track-tooth railway in Europe. Since the 1980s, normal operation on the gear line has been provided in an appropriate way, without the use of the gear. Therefore, tooth locomotives are currently only used in nostalgic journeys.

The ownership and management of the line have undergone several changes. After World War II, the operation on the Czech side was restored, but in 1958 traffic was stopped due to the abolition of cross-border traffic. In December 2005 the current route was 036 divided and the Tanvald-Harrachov section was connected to the route 036. The operation was secured by four new motor locomotives, again from Floridsdorf.

The route went through several key events, including the disruption due to the emergency status of the Jizera bridge in February 1997. After the protests between municipalities and residents, the operation was resumed, but the operation was closed again on 28 September 1997. Thanks to the change of state policy, ČD has taken over its operation in an interval since 1 December 1998.

Today the Tanvald-Harrachov line is active and accessible to visitors. In 2009-2010 new railway stops were opened on the line, financed by European Union funds. The track is not only an important transport connection, but also a cultural and historical place that deserves the attention of visitors. Visiting this track offers an opportunity to explore the unique architecture of the railway and appreciate its historical importance.

Welcome to the place where the unwavering power of man and the harsh nature of the mountain landscape join. You are standing at one of the most important and interesting railway routes in our region. If you look around now, you'll probably see cliffs, steep slopes, and a deep valley that stretches right before your eyes. Feel the atmosphere of a place where the iron road tries to climb heights that would be almost unattainable for ordinary vehicles. Do you hear the calm of the mountain nature? In time, however, it will be interrupted by the sound of a heavy machine that will sneak along these tracks towards you.

Let's go back together to when this section began to be born. Imagine the beginning of the 20th century, exactly the year of a thousand nine hundred and two. The world was completely different back then, divided between the great powers that tried to control the landscape and trade routes. This railroad wasn't built just to transport people or goods, but it had a deeper, strategic significance. The goal was to establish a strong link between the empire of Austria-Hungary and Prussia. It was a connection that was meant to link existing transport networks and allow faster movement in this important area. In the year of a thousand and nine hundred and two sections from Tanvald to Kořenov opened up and connected with German tracks, it was a huge technical and political success. Back then, people were very hoping to watch the iron spine intersect through rocks and forests.

Now pay attention to what's right under your feet or right in front of you. If you look at the rails, notice that they're not exactly the same as the ones you're used to in the lowlands. This is because this track is zubile. This means that in the middle of the tracks there is a special element, a towelette that has a series of teeth on it. This technical architecture is the key to the entire success of this place. Notice how this structure is designed to withstand a huge rise. The thread that runs on this track does not only have wheels that rely on the flat track area, but it has a special gear wheel that solves into these teeth. It is a fascinating mechanical process that allows the machine to continuously take up and rise without the risk of slipping back unchecked. It is this technique that makes this line one of the darkest railways in the whole of Bohemia.

When you look at the steep slopes surrounding the track, you can realize what a huge task engineers and workers had at that time. Even though today we do not know the names of individual masters or the names of thousands of workers who have worked in these mountains in the frost and in the impact of weather, their work here is felt in every piece of iron and in every stone that holds this track on the slope. Their legacy is still alive in this technical precision.

But history has not always been about progress and association. We need to look at the difficult times that have been with this place. After many years of successful operation, in the year one thousand nine hundred fifty-eight came a great change that was painful for the region. Due to political decisions and the abolition of cross-border traffic, the Czech section between Tanvald and Kořenov was stopped. The path that was meant to unite states was suddenly interrupted by borders and political pressures. The railway, which once bogged down with life and motion, became a silent witness to the cold atmosphere among neighbouring countries. The section between Tanvald and Harrachov remained, but its original meaning as a connecting route has been suppressed for decades.

Fortunately, time passes and things change. After a long time of silence and limited use, there was a new beginning. In the year two thousand and five, the Tanvald-Harrachov section was again successfully connected to the main track number zero three six. This modernisation and reconnection meant that this historic journey came back to life. Today, it is no longer just a relic of the past, but a living element of the region that once again serves people and brings visitors like you.

Now, I want to draw you into one of the real peculiarities that should interest you in your next observation. Do you know that you are standing in one of the last places in all of Europe where this typical normal-track-tooth railway is operated? That's a very special phenomenon. Most similar systems have either been replaced by other modes of transport or have been converted into other breakup systems. But you are in a place where the true, historical form of technology has been preserved. It's like witnessing a living history that keeps moving and changing, but remains true to its original principle. This track is a truly unique one that you would find very hard to find elsewhere in this world.

In your further examination, try to perceive not only what you see, but what you feel. Feel the steep slope of the terrain, perceive the power of the mountains, and imagine the huge machines that have to be measured with this power every day. This railroad is not just a road, it is a monument to human ingenuity and courage to face natural obstacles.

Thank you for choosing to pay attention to this memory. We hope that this view of the railway history and technology has brought you new experiences and that you will continue to be fascinated by its steepness and uniqueness. Continue your journey now, explore the surrounding countryside and enjoy the beauty of the Jizera Mountains. You may even be able to catch a view of the train crawling along these tracks with relentless endurance. We give you a pleasant journey and a wonderful experience from this place. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

If you're looking for winter views, prepare for a snowy landscape.

Transport is possible by public means of transport or by car.

Take comfortable clothes, plenty of drinking water and a small meal on the way. For the comfort of the journey it is good to have something with you for any unpleasant weather.

For photography are the most suitable places in sections where the track creates interesting shapes in the landscape, especially near water works.

Families with children enjoy the ride thanks to calm pace and the opportunity to observe nature and operation on a single blind track. It's a nice way to spend time out there without too much effort.
