The Jewish cemetery in Rakovník is one of the oldest Jewish grave areas in Czech countries. Located in the eastern part of the city in František Diepolta street and is protected as a cultural monument. Since 1996, the Jewish village in Prague has been the administrator.

The cemetery was established in the first half of the 17th century and gradually grew. Today it covers an area over 4000 square meters and is divided into three parts. More than 400 tombstones from the 17th to 20th century were preserved in its territory, the oldest of which dates from 1656-1657. He served as a burial ground until 1979 when he was closed for political change. Today, it is part of the premises with the ceremonial hall and the classicist house of the grave man, built in the first half of the 19th century.

The creation of the cemetery is related to the long-term Jewish settlement in Rakovník. The first written mention of them dates back to 1441, but only a few families lived here at the time. The Jewish religious community was officially founded in 1796. In the 19th century, Rakovník became the center of the Jewish community in the region. During the Nazi occupation, the local community disappeared, but the cemetery was preserved and has been properly maintained since 1996 by the Jewish village in Prague.

Architecturally, the cemetery is interesting in its development. The oldest part dates back to the 17th century, when tombstones of red limestone were built. In the 19th century, classicist elements such as the tomb house used to manage the cemetery were added. The ceremonial hall with preserved painting comes from this period and reflects religious motives such as candlesticks and reading counters. The cemetery has specialised departments, such as children, refugees and urns.

The cemetery was extended several times, for example in 1745, 1856 and 1886. It was closed in 1979 for political change, but it was reopened after 1996. Today it is only accessible after agreement with the administrators that are listed next to the entrance. For a visit you must contact the Jewish village in Prague in advance.

The cemetery is an important monument not only for the history of Rakovník, but also for Jewish history in Czech countries. Its preserved architecture and tombstones represent evidence of a long-term Jewish presence in the region.

Audio Guide - Jewish cemetery in Rakovník

---

Welcome, dear visitors! You're standing in front of one of the oldest and most important places that history brings to the present. Around you lies a vast, peaceful space where centuries and memories meet. Look at what lies ahead.

The earth beneath your feet is covered with ancient tombstones that tell stories of the past. These stone monuments witness life and sadness, but also a reference to the culture and traditions that lived here. Note how tombstones differ in size and style - some are simple, some are decorated, but all are proof of how Jews have adapted and maintained their customs for centuries.

Let's move on to the first time this place was created. The Jewish cemetery in Rakovník was founded in sixteen thirty-five as the first place where Jews could be buried. This was when Rakovník became an important city and the Jewish community began to grow here. The first tombstones were laid here in the seventeenth century in the 1960s, between sixteen and sixty-six and sixteen-five-sixty-seven. This means that the cemetery here is older than many of the local historical settlements and buildings we see today.

Now pay attention to what has happened to this place over the years. The first significant expansion of the cemetery took place in the seventeenth years of the eighteenth century. In the 1850s it spread again, and in the 1800s it reached its current surface. The whole complex is divided into three parts, which allows the original layout to be maintained while allowing further development.

In the first half of the nineteenth century, a classicist tomb house was built - a small but important building, which served as a place where they took care of burial and keeping the cemetery. Today, this house is part of the whole complex and is visible from the surrounding area. Notice how its architecture differs from the surrounding buildings - it is a typical example of the classical style that was very popular at the time.

Looking for something more interesting? The cemetery here is one of the oldest Jewish burial grounds in Czech countries. This means that there are many stories that are connected to this place. Some tombstones are very old and tell about the personalities who lived and died here. In nine hundred seventy-nine, the cemetery was closed for political change, which means there were no more funerals. However, this does not mean that the monuments here have disappeared - on the contrary, they are preserved here as a permanent legacy.

Look up at some of the tombstones. Some are made of stone, some are made of other materials, but all are proof of how the Jews here cared for their dead. Some tombstones are decorated, others are simply shaped, but they are all important historical monuments. Notice how there are also tombstones from the period when Rakovník was part of other countries - this is proof of how history is reflected into each tombstone.

Do you feel you would like to learn more about what is hidden here? The cemetery is full of mysteries and secrets. Some tombstones are so old, their names and stories no longer know each other. Yet the atmosphere here is so strong that you feel like you've gone into the past. You can imagine what it was like to live in Rakovník in the sixteenth century, what customs they had and what local Jews used to use the cemetery here.

Now that you have seen what is visible here, you can go on another journey of discovery. If you have time, visit the ceremonial hall, which is part of the entire complex. Here the Jews held ceremonies and reminded themselves of their ancestors. Interestingly, the cemetery is protected as a cultural monument, which means it is important to protect and respect it.

Notice how nature and history connect. Around you lies a quiet field surrounded by tombstones. This is where you can relax and think about what it was like to live in the past. Remember, the cemetery here is not only about the dead, but also about the living who continue the tradition here.

Thank you for your attention and we wish you to enjoy the tour of this place. If you have further questions or want to learn more about the history of this cemetery, do not hesitate to ask for our further information. Let the walk here become an exploration and a memory of the past that binds us all.

Continue the search, but remember, this place is important and worth respecting. Let your walk through the cemetery become a pleasant and exciting journey into the past.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the cemetery awakens to life. Between old tombstones, fresh grass begins to grow, and buds on trees create a fine shadow. The light is soft and pleasant in this period to observe the details of the stones. I recommend arriving in the morning when the air is fresh. Put on some layers, because the wounds may still be cold, but the sun is starting to warm.

Summer Months Bring To Rakovníka strong sun and high temperatures. Nature is in full bloom, which gives the place a rich green color, but heat can be tiring. Due to the increased attendance in the main summer season, it is best to arrive immediately after opening so that you can enjoy your peace and avoid the greatest heat. Don't forget the headgear and plenty of fluids.

Autumn in this place creates a melancholy and quiet atmosphere. Leaves falling from trees cover paths and colors turn to gold and brown. The morning mist adds mystery to the memory, but may make it difficult to see some letters on the monuments. It is advisable to have fixed shoes because the road can be slippery from moisture. The ideal time to visit is this afternoon when the sun shines low.

Winter turns the cemetery into a place of deep peace and quiet. Without leaves, the tombstones are better visible, even if the surrounding landscape gives rise and grey. If snow falls, the monument looks very noble, but also sad. During this period, the visit is least disturbed by people. The necessity is very warm clothes and tight shoes because cold and damp can be unpleasant. Watch out for a shorter day, which limits the time for inspection.
