The Jewish cemetery in Zlonice is a small but significant remnant of Jewish history in Bohemia. It is located southeast of the village by the road to Berovic and is situated on an area of 1709 square meters. About 120 tombstones from sandstone were preserved in its territory, which are an important source of information about the Jewish community. The cemetery is protected as a cultural monument and represents a rare example of a Jewish burial site from the period after the 30 years of war.

It was probably created in the 17th century, after the 30-year war, when Jewish communities were restored in Bohemia. Jews settled in many cities and villages, including Zlonice, where they became part of local life. The cemetery served as the last resting place for residents of surrounding villages and towns, such as Zlonice, Berovice or other places nearby. Its importance is to preserve the memory of Jewish settlements in this area of Central Bohemia.

The tombstones are mostly sandstone, typical of Jewish cemeteries from the 17th to 19th century. Some of them contain symbolism and inscriptions in Hebrew that reflect religious and cultural traditions. Thanks to the small size of the cemetery, its preservation in good condition is exceptional and testifies to the care of cultural heritage.

Today, the cemetery is open to the public and offers visitors the opportunity to become acquainted with the life of the Jews and their traditions. It is part of the cultural heritage of the municipality Zlonice and the region, making it a valuable object for further research and protection.

This monument is worth visiting not only for its historical values but also as an example of cultural heritage care. The preserved tombstones and symbols offer a view of the past and show the importance of the Jewish community in this area. For tourists and historically oriented visitors it is a valuable source of information and a rare proof of Jewish life.

Welcome to this quiet place that carries centuries of memory.

You are standing in front of a Jewish cemetery in the Criminals, a small but extremely important place that resembles the life and traditions of the Jewish community that once belonged here. In front of you there is a plot of about 17 hundred and ninety-nine square meters lying southeast of the village, just a short walk from the road to Berovic. At first sight you may be surprised by his modesty - it is not an extensive complex with massive structures, but it is in this stealth that his uniqueness is hidden. Look around: The cemetery is surrounded by fields and forests as if trying to preserve its quiet, private atmosphere.

This place was created at a time when the Czechs began to slowly emerge from the dark years of the Thirty Years' War. After 1650 Jewish villages began to recover in smaller villages such as Zlonice. It was only around 1680 that they decided to set up their own cemetery - a place where they could honor and remind their deceased. There were no tombstones yet that you see today, but the first funerals probably came here in the next decades. The cemetery became the final rest for the local Jews, but also for those who came from nearby villages and towns. It was their home together in death, just like in life.

Now pay attention to what is before you. Before your eyes you have about one hundred and twenty tombstones, mainly made from sandstone - a stone that was easily accessible and popular in these regions for its durability. Some of them are centuries old, yet their shapes and inscriptions have been preserved. Note that most of them carry inscriptions in Hebrew - a language that has always been an important means of connecting with traditions and belief for Jewish communities. Some stones are decorated with symbols that have profound meaning: for example, menora, six-arm candlestick, or David's star. These marks remind us that the country is sanctified and that everyone buried here has a place in history.

Let's move a little closer and see some of the tombstones. Even if you don't know Hebrew, you might notice how different their shapes are. Some are simple, almost abstract, others are carved into detail as if every stone had its own story. For example, tombstones from the 18th century are often decorated with geometric patterns or stylized plants that symbolize eternity. These details show how art trade in Jewish communities has evolved for centuries.

Although there are no specific personalities known to be associated with this cemetery, its importance for the history of Jewish settlement in Bohemia is undisputed. This little corner of the country was the last home for hundreds of people who came here from different parts of the country and abroad. Their lives were filled with challenges, but also with beautiful moments, and this is where they found peace. The cemetery is like a book that tells about the life of the community that belonged here - their families, their customs and their beliefs.

The interesting thing is that despite its small size, this cemetery is one of the few preserved places of its kind around it. Many similar cemeteries have been neglected or destroyed over the years, but the community here has tried to preserve it. After 1989, the cemetery was declared a cultural monument to the Czech Republic, which means it is protected and can be visited. Today is a place where you can feel the connection with the past and understand how important Jewish communities have played in our history.

Stay for a while before leaving and feel the atmosphere of this place. Close your eyes and imagine how prayers once sounded here, how funerals were held here, and how people met the last farewell. The cemetery is a place of silence, but also a monument to the lives that belonged here. If you're interested in this place, you can come back later and examine every tombstone in more detail. Don't be afraid to ask the locals who can tell you other attractions. Whether you spend just a few minutes or longer here, you will surely bear the feeling that you have encountered part of our history, which is often forgotten, but which is extremely important.

Thank you for seeing this place. May your visit bring you a new perspective and respect for the history that lies here.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in spring or autumn when the weather is pleasant and the cemetery is lit by the sun. In summer it can be hot in the open, while in winter some roads can be frozen. It is recommended to visit the cemetery early morning or afternoon when there are fewer visitors and light falls favourably on tombstones.

This time you can see the detailed inscriptions and symbols on the tombstones without direct sunlight, which could cause shadows or shine on the stones.

It is recommended to arrive by car because public transport to this location is not very common.

If you arrive by car, make sure that the cemetery is located on the property by the road but is not directly in the middle of communication. The entrance is only possible through the marked entrance.

Take with you comfortable shoes and suitable clothes because the cemetery is located in an open area. You can also bring a map or brochure about the history of the Jewish cemetery if available. There is no shadow in the cemetery, so on hot days, wear sunglasses and sunscreen.

Remember to also take enough water, because there are no sources of drinking water in the cemetery.

Photography is permitted, but it is advisable to respect the sensitive atmosphere of the site. The best places for photos are tombstones with well-read inscriptions and symbols that reflect Jewish culture. It is recommended to take pictures with favourable light, for example at sunrise or sunset, when shadows are soft and light are natural.

If you want to capture detailed inscriptions, use oblique light, which is typical of morning or afternoon.

In the vicinity of the cemetery you can visit the villages of Zlonice and Berovice, which are only a few kilometres away. The river Ohře is also interesting, located within five kilometres of the place. The natural landscape of the Central Bohemian region offers possibilities for walking and relaxation in nature.

The villages of Zlonice and Berovice offer an opportunity to know the local atmosphere and possibly some historical buildings or monuments.

For families with children, visiting the cemetery is an interesting opportunity to get to know history and culture. Children can be intrigued by old tombstones and stories that hide behind them. You can explain the importance of symbols and traditions associated with Jewish cemeteries. It is also advisable for children to prepare a short walk with tasks such as finding the oldest tombstones or various symbols.

In the surroundings you can also visit the natural beauty that children can take, for example walking along the river Ohře.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the cemetery wakes up with nature. Young leaves on trees and the first flowers create a fresh and hopeful atmosphere. The light is soft and pleasant in this period to observe the details of the stones. I recommend arriving in the morning when the air is the purest. Dress well, because the morning cold can still feel when the sun is starting to warm.

The summer months bring strong sun and thick green screen that provides a pleasant shade. The day is very long, which allows a quiet walk even late in the evening. There are more people in the main summer season, which is why it is better to arrive early in the morning to enjoy silence. Don't forget the headgear against the sun and plenty of water because heat can be intense in the open.

Autumn season is the most melancholic. Colored leaves covering the ground and morning fog give the place a deep, serious charge. The golden light in the afternoon beautifully highlights the texture of old tombstones. Beware of slippery roads due to falling leaves and wet soil. It is advisable to have firmer shoes and warmer layers of clothing.

In winter, the place is very quiet and lonely. Without leaves, the tree structures are visible and the very outline of the monument is more clearly visible in grey light. If snow falls, the cemetery looks very clean and almost otherworldly. At this time the visitors are minimal, but the days are short. Prepare very warm clothes and shoes with good insulation, because it can be very cold in the open.
