Elizabeth Spa, also known as Spa V, is one of the original six public balneooperates in Karlovy Vary. This Art Nouveau building, named after Empress Elizabeth Bavarian (Sissi), which visited Karlovy Vary in 1892, is an architectural dominant of the northern part of the spa complex. Since their foundation, the spa has been surrounded by a park and offers a wide range of treatments.

The emergence of the Elizabeth family The spa is related to the historical context of late history and Art Nouveau which took place in Europe at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the Czech Republic, this period was characterised by the growth of industry and urbanisation. The spa was named after Empress Elizabeth Bavarian, who visited Karlovy Vary in 1892. The original German name was Elisabeth bethbad, Czech Elizabeth Spa or Hotel Elisabeth. Since 1918 they have also been referred to as Spa V.

The design of the spa was entrusted to Austrian architect and municipal construction engineer, Karlovy Vary Franz Drobny. In 1903 the construction of the building was decided, which replaced the park of Franz Joseph I. and the city tree nursery. Construction of the three-way complex of the spa began in 1905 and lasted approximately one year. The building combines neo-Baroque elements with Art Nouveau details, which corresponded to the requirements of modern design. The facade is Art Nouveau and the roof is neo-Baroque. The French-style park and the gargoyle pool add to the aesthetics of the whole.

The spa underwent several reconstructions which preserved the original interiors in the form of a breakdown and decoration of the main facade. Balneooperas and pool in the basement have been modernized. The first reconstruction took place after the start of the operation, where the balneooperation was modernized and in 1963 the older statue of a girl with a pitcher from Břítislav Benda was installed. The second reconstruction took place at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, when the interiors were modernized and the technical equipment was modernized including an indoor swimming pool of 25 metres long with two saunas.

Since 2002, the spa has been again officially called Elizabeth Spa and has been transformed into a public limited company owned by the city Karlovy Vary. During the last reconstruction of the swimming pool interiors in 2004, the pool was accompanied by light whirlpools, a gargoyle and a children's pool.

Today Elizabeth Spa is the only truly public spa in Karlovy Vary. They offer a wide range of treatments, ranging from traditional spa treatments with massages, peat wraps and salt caves, to modern relaxation wellness services. The spa is long-term loss-making and the necessary reconstruction and rental of the building is discussed.

Elizabeth The spa is not only a monument to architecture, but also a living testament to the history of spa traditions in Karlovy Vary. Their visit offers a view of the past and an opportunity to explore a wide range of treatment services that are now as popular as in the times of Empress Sissi.

Welcome to Karlovy Vary, a city where history combines with the calm of nature and the healing power of water. You're standing in one of the most important places in this spa town. In front of your eyes is a monumental building that is a symbol of elegance and tradition. They're Alžbětiny lázně. Feel the atmosphere surrounding you. You are in the park, in the green heart of the spa complex, and right here, in this quiet environment, is located one of the most important buildings of the entire city. This building, which you can hear under another name such as Spa V, is a key point in the history of local balneotraffic.

Let us now return together in time and understand why this place is so special. In order to understand the importance of this building, we must realise that at the time of its creation, Karlovy Vary was the centre of the world spa life. Alžbětiny lázně is not just an ordinary object. It is one of the original six public spa facilities that were built in this city for the treatment and rest of visitors. Imagine the time when the spa became a symbol of social life and health.

Now pay attention to the name this building bears. Alžbětiny lázně was named after a very important figure in Europe at the time. It is Empress Elizabeth Bavarian, who was known to the world by her beauty and independent nature. Her visit to Karlovy Vary in 1892 was an event that left a deep mark in the heart of the city. It was this visit and the empress's personality that inspired the future name of this place. Although the construction itself, which you are now observing, was completed a few years later, in 1906, the spirit of this famous woman is present in every stone and every detail of this building.

Now look at the construction itself and perceive its architecture. This building forms the dominant northern part of the entire spa complex. Her presence is strong and gives the impression of stability and nobility. The whole project was entrusted to a man named Franz Drobny. He was an Austrian architect and also an urban building engineer, which means that he had to introduce not only an artistic idea but also the technical precision needed for such a demanding operation.

Notice the style in which the building is exposed. It's an Art Nouveau. If you look at her facade and how the building integrates into the surrounding park, you will see the typical effort of this style to connect human architecture with organic shapes of nature. The Art Nouveau is about finesse, about fluent lines and beauty, which does not look machined but rather comes out of the surrounding environment. This building is not in conflict with the park, she's working with it. Its existence in this green space is harmonious and creates a sense of peace which is absolutely essential for spa care.

Let's see what you see in the beauty of the overall look, try focusing your eyes on the details that were gradually added over time. Another important element appeared here in 1940, which gives the place a human dimension. It's a bronze sculpture created by an artist Bøtislav Benda. Introducing a young girl holding a jug. This statue, even though it's smaller than the building itself, carries great strength. A girl with a jug reminds herself of the very nature of this place - water that is a source of life, treatment and refreshment. It's a detail that encourages you to stop and to perceive beauty in small things.

The interesting thing that you can see in your next walk is how much this building is connected to the overall structure of the city. Alžbětiny lázně is not an isolated object but part of a wider spa system that has been built for decades. Each of the original six baths had its own role and its own storyline, but it is this building in the northern part of the complex that acts as one of the most prominent pillars.

Imagine all the people who were here before you. Imagine the visitors who were here in the early twentieth century looking for healing, and those who were just walking around in beautiful clothes to see the world's elite. All these stories are stored here in architecture and in the atmosphere of this place.

But I will no longer hold you in one place. Alžbětiny lázně is just the beginning of your journey. I suggest you continue along the paths of the park and be carried away by the beauty of this place. See other parts of the spa complex, feel the smell of trees and listen to the silence that is so rare in Karlovy Vary. Every step can lead you to another surprise and another story waiting to be discovered.

Thank you for spending this moment with us and for being interested in the history of this important place. We wish you a pleasant and peaceful passage through the spa city. Enjoy the beauty Karlovy Vary offers you. Goodbye.
