Arcibiskupské zahrady v Kroměříži in the Zlín Region forms a complex of Flower and Podzamecká Gardens. They are important examples of Baroque architecture. Both have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998 and have been declared a national cultural monument since 1995.

In 1665-1675 Bishop Charles II of Liechtenstein founded the flower garden. It was created in the western part of the city in the premises of the former walls. The castle garden is more extensive from both complexes and is situated on an area of 64 hectares. Both areas were founded and owned by the bishops and archbishops.

The flower garden is smaller and younger than Podlamecká. The dominant architectural element is a 244-metre colonnade which forms one side of the complex. The entire complex is part of the Kroměříž City Heritage Reserve and the Archbishop Castle is located in its immediate vicinity.

For people interested in the history of garden art, an exhibition of garden culture is established in the castle. This exhibition in two halls presents historical materials such as plans, drawings, models and paintings. They relate to Kromeriz gardens and architecture from the 16th to 19th century.

The combination of unique architecture and historical importance makes these gardens a key place to understand the development of European horticulture. Visiting the complex offers the opportunity to see the documented form of the baroque park on an international scale.

Welcome to Kroměříži, in the heart of Zlin County. Right now you are standing in front of a place that is the real jewel of the Czech landscape. In front of you there are Archbishop gardens, a unique space that connects two large parts, with flowers and Podzamecka gardens. When you look around you, you probably perceive the strange calm and harmony these spaces emit. It's a place where nature meets the human quest for perfection, and where every meter of land tells its own story of power, faith and aesthetics.

Let us now stop together at how this mutually originated. To understand the meaning of what you see, we have to go back hundreds of years in time. The flowering garden, which is one of the most important parts of this complex, was founded in the years six hundred sixty-five to six hundred seventy-five. Its creator and founder was Bishop Charles the second of Liechtenstein. Imagine the time when this ambitious project began to be born here in the walls of the time. Bishop Charles didn't just want an ordinary park, but he wanted a place that would reflect the idea of beauty and order. It is thanks to his vision that today we can admire this space that has been preserved for future generations.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. Although the particular names of architects remained forgotten in times, their work can be seen in every detail. Both gardens are excellent examples of Baroque architecture. Notice the layout of the space. While the Flower Garden is a concentrated expression of geometry and precision, the Castle Garden is much more extensive. To give you a better idea of its size, this part extends over an area of sixty-four hectares. It is a huge space that allows visitors to truly escape the urban rush and get lost in the green.

When you walk on, feel the atmosphere of this place. It's fascinating to think of Bishop Karl's personality as the second of Liechtenstein. He was a man of his time who understood that gardens are not just about plants, but are basically open rooms under the open air. It was he who breathed life into this place and made it a representative space to impress anyone who visited it. It's fascinating how one person could change the face of the entire city and leave a trail that is visible even after over three centuries.

Let us now move on to something that makes this place truly special on a global scale. You may have noticed that this place is not just a local park, but it has a much wider appreciation. In the year one thousand nine hundred ninety-five, the Flower and Podzamecká Garden and the Archbishop's Castle were declared a national cultural monument. But that was just the beginning. In the year one thousand nine hundred ninety-eight something crucial happened. Both gardens were listed as UNESCO World Heritage. This means that their value is not only Czech but global. They are recognized as unique works of human ingenuity and care for the landscape that must be protected for all mankind.

The interesting thing that may interest you is the contrast between these two gardens. On the one hand we have the Flower Garden, which was created within the walls and is a symbol of Baroque discipline. On the other hand, we have a large Podzamecká garden, which offers a completely different sense of space and freedom. It is a fascinating combination that makes the entire complex within the urban heritage reservation a unique whole. Imagine how trends have changed over the centuries, how the perception of beauty has changed, and yet this space remains true to its roots.

Now that you know the basic history and meaning of this place, I suggest you begin your own discovery. Let yourself be guided by paths, perceive the smell of plants and observe how light is played in the space of these historic gardens. Take a look at the details that interest you, and try to imagine how people came here centuries ago, when the fate of the region was decided.

The Flower and Podzamecká Gardens are a place for contemplation, but also for admiration for human craft. Whether you're attracted to history, architecture, or simply the desire for peace in nature, this place will offer you everything. Don't forget to note the details of the baroque style you will find here, and remember that every step you make leads you on the paths that Bishop Charles the other of Liechtenstein once proposed.

Thank you for a short journey through history. Now the word is yours. Explore every corner, enjoy the beauty of this world heritage and be enchanted by the Kroměříže atmosphere. I wish you a pleasant and inspiring walk around these beautiful gardens. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the gardens awaken to life, which can be seen in fresh green and flowering trees. The atmosphere is full of hope and fine colors. We recommend shoes suitable for wet grass and visit in the morning when the light is soft and the air is fresh.

Summer offers a full bloom of vegetation and a rich green silverware of trees that provide a pleasant shade. The sun highlights the details of architecture and colour of flowers. It is advisable to choose light, breathable clothes and a sun hat, while the best is to come early in the morning to avoid the greatest heat.

Autumn comes with a colorful colour of leaves, which creates a dramatic and nostalgic framework of the whole complex. The light is golden and milder. It is practical to wear a light jacket or sweater for colder days and choose the time around noon when the colors of nature are the most distinctive.

Winter brings peace and minimalism when you can see the very shapes of wood and the geometry of spaces without leaves. If snow attacks, the landscape is a dreamy and quiet impression. Hot clothes, tight shoes and gloves are essential, while a short walk in the afternoon at low sun offers the most peace.
