Kamenný kříž u Stonáče Crucifix

The Kamenný kříž u Stonáče is a stone crucifix located in Bílany, a district of Kroměříž in the Zlín region. Erected in 1831, the monument commemorates the victims of the cholera pandemic that swept Europe and North America between 1829 and 1851.

The crucifix was established following a 1831 cholera outbreak in the Kroměříž parish. At that time, a field was designated as a cholera cemetery, where 106 people were interred. This site lay opposite the old cemetery on Kotojedská road, where the Šipka youth center now stands. František Pípal, an iron merchant, funded the stone crucifix to mark the location and donated 40 gulden to the Panna Marie parish for its ongoing upkeep.

The monument features a two-step base supporting a pillar with broken corners and square frames, topped by a stepped cornice. The shaft includes compressed volute wings on the sides and recessed panels on the front, ending in a cornice and fluting. A cross with trefoil-ended arms rises from the profiled base. The figure of the crucified Christ wears a loincloth tied to the left, with his head tilted slightly toward the right shoulder and crowned with thorns. An inscription on the front shaft, including an 1831 chronogram, states that the cross commemorates Jesus Christ in memory of the cholera. The rear of the shaft notes that iron merchant František Pípal built the monument in 1832. Furthermore, the back of the modern base records that Bílany citizens donated the monument in 1959.

The crucifix currently stands in the southwestern part of the Bílany cadastral area near the Stonáč stream, though this is not its original site. In 1959, it was moved from a depot in Květná zahrada to its present position on the Válek embankment within the Stonáč natural monument. Records from 1810 describe a dispute between Bílany residents and Jiří Rösner and his son-in-law, František Pípal. The conflict concerned a willow embankment Rösner built to protect his meadow, which locals feared would cause flooding. Pípal and Rösner were prominent Kroměříž iron merchants who resided in the house U Zlatého kohouta near the town hall on Velké náměstí.

Epidemic records show that while many died in Břest in 1831, no one in Bílany perished from cholera that year, despite the village's marshy terrain. However, Bílany later suffered 37 deaths during the Prussian cholera epidemic of 1866. In 2015, Kroměříž technical services restored the monument after it was defaced with spray paint by an unknown individual.

The Kamenný kříž u Stonáče is a protected Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic, registered under number 101316. It is located within the Stonáč natural monument on the Válek embankment. The site serves as a testament to the historical impact of the 19th-century cholera pandemic on the local community.
