Boží muka (Modřany) Wayside shrine

The torture of God in Modřany, located on the park no. 1816 in the private garden of the house in U pila street, is a monument to soldiers fallen during the siege of Prague Prussia in 1757. This small brick building is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and reminds us of the tragic event when the Prussians seized the pontoon bridge near Modřán. Its architectural appearance, with a four-sided, three-stage structure and a wall-mounted needle roof, ending with a two-arm cross, attracts visitors.

The creation of God's torment is closely linked to the historical events of 1757, during the Seven Years War. The Prussians, besieging Prague, took the pontoon bridge over the Vltava near the Blue Mountains, and in the ensuing brawl many soldiers fell for the sacrifice. These slain and drowned soldiers were buried in this very place where God's torment was later built as a reminder of their sacrifice.

Architecturally, God's torture is characterized by simplicity and functionality. The construction has a quadruple, three-stage form with a chamber needle at the bottom and prismatic upper stages. Bricks separate individual stages while at the bottom of the front side we find a brick-lined nimble and rectangular nimples on all sides. The memorial plate with the text about the burial of fallen soldiers was placed above the lower niche, which adds historical weight to the monument.

The history of God's torture is also recorded in the chronicle of the village Modřany from 1895. This chronicle describes the events of 1757 and underlines the importance of the monument as a reminder of the victims of the Prussian siege. Although specific information about owners or administrators is missing, its historical context and architectural elements remain an important part of the cultural memory of the municipality Modřany.

Today, God's torment is open to the public, even if it is on private ground.
