The House at the Lower Square 306 / 20 in Opava is a two-storey building with a Renaissance core from the end of the 16th century. It is entered in the register of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic under the number 37976 / 8-1291.

The construction was built in the late Renaissance. There are no detailed reports on the persons who built the house or its original destination.

The architectural appearance of the building is the result of several stages of reconstruction. After 1772 and then in the first half of the 19th century the house underwent modifications which affected its availability. The most marked changes hit the street facade after 1902. The current three-axis facade shows Art Nouveau style features supplemented by luisése elements.

Due to limited data, neither the names of the owners nor the dramatic events that take place here are known. The house serves as a document of the urban development of Opava and a demonstration of the layering of various architectural periods within one building.

The building is now part of the historical core of the city and represents a valuable element of the building. It is particularly interesting for visitors as an example of the transformation of the Renaissance building in a modern city house with elements of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

This monument is proof of the continuity of urbanism in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Her visit offers the possibility to observe in the facade details the transition from historical styles to secession.

Welcome to the heart of Opava, a place where history meets the daily lives of residents and visitors. You're standing in front of a building in Lower Square under number 20. It is a place that does not need to shout out its glory through monumental statues or golden dome, but still carries a silent testimony about the times of the past. Now, if you look in front of you, you will see a house that is part of a wider picture of the Opava Center. Feel the atmosphere of this space where the lines of urban planning are being downloaded and where every stone beneath your feet tells its own, albeit often forgotten, story.

Now let's think about how this place happened. Although the exact date of construction or the names of specific builders remain in the fog of time and are not clearly stated in the records available, the very existence of this house in the city centre shows the importance of this area. Opava has been an important centre for centuries, where various influences clash and where commercial and craft life flourished just around the square. This house was built as part of urban tissue to serve its owners at the time and contribute to the development of the city. It's fascinating to think how many generations of people have walked through here, how many conversations have taken place in these walls and how the world around them has changed, while the walls of this house have remained in place.

Now pay attention to the very form of the building. Even if we don't know the names of the architects who designed this project, we can focus on what we're seeing right now. Look at the front of the house and feel its rhythm. Watch as the building is inscribed in a number of other houses in the square, as it forms a unified unit that defines the character of the opava center. Notice how the house responds to the light of day and how its surface changes depending on where you look at it. Even without specific ornaments to be described in the records, there is some peace in the simplicity and stability of this object itself. It is an architecture that aims not to impress its size, but rather to plant roots in the city's soil and be its faithful companion.

When we think about people who were connected to this place, we have to acknowledge that history is sometimes relentless in who it erases from memory. We don't know the specific names of the personalities that would live in this house or own it, and that's where the special charm of this place lies. This house is not a monument to one particular famous person, but rather to a monument to ordinary man, the inhabitants of Opava. Imagine all the unknown people who started their wounds here, who celebrated their accomplishments here or thought about their problems. Each of them left an invisible mark in this space. It's a place where history doesn't manifest itself through big names in textbooks, but through thousands of small lives that intersect here.

And this is where we come to a certain mystery that might be interesting to you. Why is it that some buildings are described in detail in chronicles, while others like this house remain a secret in many ways? This may be because their value lies not in the anecdotes of kings or great politicians, but in their very existence as cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. The fact that this house is protected as a cultural monument tells us that it has value for the state and for the city, even if its exact chronology is not fully untangled. This ignorance encourages us not to settle for a superficial layer of information, but to try to imagine what the walls would tell us if they could talk. What would they tell us about old Opava, the people who walked around here when the city looked so different?

This building is such a silent witness. It stands here, watching people flow, reminding us that history is not only about great battles and signed contracts, but also about the silent duration of ordinary houses in the streets of our cities. It's a reminder of continuity that connects the past to the present. When you look at the house, you don't just see the masonry and the roof, but you see a piece of the identity of the Moravian-Silesian region that has survived for decades and centuries to be part of your day today.

Now let's slowly say goodbye to this particular place. I hope you were able to enjoy this brief stop moment and that you perceived beauty in what is inconspicuous and mysterious. Opava has up its sleeve yet many other gems waiting for you. I ask you to continue to explore the surrounding areas, see the details of the other buildings and explore where your journey will take you today. You may encounter other places that tell you their stories, or ones that, like this house, carefully guard their secrets.

Thank you for your attention and for spending a moment with my voice before this cultural monument. I wish you a pleasant walk through the city, many new stimuli and beautiful experiences in our Moravian-Silesian region. See you at the next stop in this beautiful city.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon when the sun hits the facade of the house at an angle that best highlights architectural details of the building. Since it is a residential building, the tour takes place only from outside the public space.

The building is located in the city centre, so it is easily accessible by foot.

There is no need for special equipment to visit, only comfortable shoes for a walk through the historical centre. For people interested in history, we recommend taking a tour guide around the city to read more about the history of the house.

For the best photos we recommend looking for angles from opposite side of the square to capture the entire home object. The best light for façade images is during the golden hour before sunset.

Families with children can use a visit to play in search of interesting elements on the facade of the house, which will entertain the children during a short stop within a wider walk of the city.
