Důl Gabriela in Karviná was one of the most important underground coal mines in the region. It was named after Countess Gabriele Žerotín and has been closed since 2004, but its construction remains a testament to the era of Silesia's promotion in the European energy market.

The mine originated from scientific preparation. In 1852, the first test wells were carried out here, which revealed a compound of coal at a depth of 104 meters. The mining licence was obtained in 1854, and that year became the year of foundation. Property was divided between František Handwerk (25%) and Count Žerotín (75%).

From the beginning, the mine has been haunted by misfortune. In January 1856 there was a gas explosion with 17 victims, and in 1859 he was tormented by a fire. The owners did not have the repair and therefore the mine was sold in 1862 to the archduke Albrecht. It is put into operation: in 1865, mining already exceeded ten thousand tonnes per year. In the 1970s, a train was built to the Košicka-Budin track, and in the 1990s a new camera was built. The year 1899 brought the first electric machine - Ratea's fan.

The fundamental expansion meant the sale of the Mining and Metal Company in 1906. The new management has invested in modernization: the mining towers have reached 35 meters. The demand for coal increased during the First World War and in 1917 the production reached a peak of - 717 400 tonnes per year. But in April 1924, a fire broke out deep, followed by explosions that killed 15 miners. Full capacity was restored only in 1927. During the Second World War, a total of 5,012,000 tonnes of mine was extracted.

After 1945 the mine went through more changes: first it was renamed UNRRA (1947), later on Peace (1950). In 1958, he made contact with the first May. The restructuring of mining after 1989 was a gradual downturn and the mine was closed in 2004. The mining was transferred to Darkov mine. Today, the POHO Park project - a cultural centre with exhibitions, facilities for events and education, financed by the Operational Programme Fair Transformation, is expected to emerge from the former mine.

Welcome to the historical memory of Důl Gabriela, a unique witness to the coal era in Karviné. You are standing in front of an impressive industrial complex that once was the heart of coal mining in the Central European region. Note the huge walls and robust architecture that tells the story of resilience and innovation. The atmosphere is full of secrets and history waiting to be discovered.

Let's dive into the beginning of this fascinating story. Důl Gabriela was created in 1855 when the first test wells revealed a promising coal compound at a depth of 104 meters. This discovery laid the foundations for one of the most important mining sites in the region, which was named after Countess Gabriele Žerotín. The beginnings of mining activities are closely linked to historical personalities such as František Handwerka and arcivévoda Albrecht, which in 1865 brought the dola into full operation. The importance of the work was reinforced by the fact that in 1865 it amounted to 10 thousand tonnes per year.

Now look up and into the surroundings. Důl Gabriela was not only a workplace for thousands of workers, but also an architectural milestone of its time. Although specific architecture details are unknown in many ways, their functionality and robustness remain visible. Note the solid walls and industrial structures that were designed to withstand a difficult life underground.

The key stories associated with this site are not only its creation and development, but also the tragic accidents that have come here. Důl Gabriela has undergone several difficult events that have influenced its history and demonstrated the courage and bravery of its workers. Important figures associated with the mine include arcivévoda Albrecht, which was a key figure in its development.

An interesting feature is the first Rateau electric machine that started to power mining activities here in 1865. This progress symbolizes the technological revolution that took place in this area and contributed to its development.

Now that you've explored the history and architecture of Gabriel Mine, the invitation is another tour of this fascinating place. Plans to transform mining districts in 'POHO Park' promise new life and access to its rich history. Thank you for coming through this intriguing place. Be sure that even after your visit, the work and story of Gabriel Mine will remain alive in the memory of the region.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the former site of Gabrielle mine is autumn or spring when the weather is quieter and vegetation nearby offers beautiful green colors. This time of year also usually brings fewer visitors, which makes it possible to explore the site better.

Parking can be found near Gabriel's mine, but we recommend the use of public transport or parking in nearby municipalities. When planning the journey, keep in mind the availability of parking spaces and the possibility of connecting with public transport.

When you visit, take the right shoes with you because the terrain around the former mine can be unbalanced. Complete your inventory of sun protection tie and water, especially if you are planning an extended walk.

Photography is particularly interesting here in the morning or late afternoon hours, when light adds dramatic effect to the ruinous structures and surrounding landscape. The best places for photos are the western parts of the mining area where you can capture views of Karvina.

In the vicinity of the former mine Gabriela there are historical city centers such as Karviná and Český Těšín. These sites offer interesting cultural spaces, including museums and historical monuments, which can be visited within one day.
