South of Libušína in the Kladno region, between 1890 and 1892, a coal mine called Max was dug for black coal. It got its name from Max Egon Fürtenberg, a member of the board of directors of the Prague Iron Company. During its existence, the mine was renamed several times. It bore the names President Beneš, Fierlinger II, and Gottwald I.
Above the shaft stood two lattice hoisting towers standing close next to each other, turned ninety degrees to each other. The hoisting was carried out by steam hoisting machines from the company Breitfeld, Daněk and Company from Karlín and from the Škoda Engineering Works in Plzen. The extracted coal was transported by a narrow gauge railway, that is, by a branch line of the Kladno-Nučice railway.
The pit was five hundred meters deep and in 1933 they began to deepen it by another hundred meters. In 1938, one of the steam hoisting machines was replaced by an electric machine. Because of it, a new engine house with a steel structure was built. At the end of the nineteen forties, they rebuilt the second engine house so that an electric hoisting machine could fit into it.
