The King of England House is a historical building in the spa part of Karlovy Vary on Castle Hill, dating from the first half of the 19th century. This construction represents an important example of early historism and, thanks to its exposed position above the Mill Colonnade, it is a distinctive landmark of the city centre. Since 23 January 2024 the building has been officially registered as a cultural monument.

The building was built between 1818 and 1823, the oldest written proof of its existence dates back to 1826. The first known owner was Karlovy Vary delicatesser Josef Bernhardt ml., who named the house at the Polish Hall. From 1817 to 1820 he set up a social dance hall, which became the centre of Polish cultural life in Karlovy Vary.

The current architectural form of the building is due to modifications from the second half of the 19th century. According to the 1852 project in the 1960s and 1970s, the original empirical-classicist facades were adapted to the classical form and the construction was increased by one floor. Today, the facade is divided by a high pilaster order in Tuscan style, while a low valb roof provides neopalladian forms to the building.

The object has a slightly trapezoidal plan of approximately 19.5 metres long and a width of 14 metres. It has three above-ground and one underground floors; due to the rigidity of the terrain, the underground floor on the northeast side runs fully above the ground level and serves as a ground floor. The building has three facade views, the fourth adjacent to the neighbouring house.

In 1839 the house was transferred to the property of Josef and František Teller, important local hotels. They started using the building as a hotel or spa house and renamed it King of England. He remained in the Teller family until 1949 when the building was nationalized. However, the spa operation ceased to be used in the 1920s and since 1949 the Karlovy Vary Museum has been based here.

The historical value of the house is associated with the personalities who lived here. From 1854 to 1884 the author and director of the Vienna Court Theatre Heinrich Laube lived here, who described his experiences from the city in a six-part work of the Travel Novel. Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev also stayed here in 1874 and 1875.

Currently, the building is owned by the company BS-VICTORIA s.r.o. and is registered as a facility. The construction shows damaged statics and its owner expressed a wish to demolish the building. However, Karlovy Vary City Hall is trying to prevent and enforce the declaration of the building as a cultural monument to ensure its protection.

The House of England belongs to the last preserved late classicist objects in Karlovy Vary with original interior layout and interior elements. It is a unique testament to the growth of the spa and social life of the 19th century. This monument deserves the attention of any visitor interested in the architecture and history of the spa centre.

Welcome to Karlovy Vary, a place where history meets nature and every stone tells its own story. Right now, you are facing one of the very interesting buildings in the spa part of the city, specifically on Castle Hill. The dům Král anglický stands before you. Feel his presence and how he dominates in space. It is a building that attracts attention through its appearance and location and forms an important part of the view of the city centre. Stop for a moment, take a breath and get sucked into the atmosphere of the nineteenth century, when Karlovy Vary became one of the most important places to relax and culture throughout Europe.

Now let's go back in time together to understand how this building came into being and what path it went down. The oldest documentary evidence of the existence of this house has introduced us to the year one thousand eight hundred twenty-six. At the time, however, the building looked different and had a different meaning. Imagine that this place was not just an ordinary house, but it served as a centre of Polish cultural life. The building was then known as the Polish Hall. It was a place of meetings, discussions and social events where people who loved art and culture met. It's fascinating to think how many interesting conversations have taken place in these walls and how much energy was in charge here at the time.

But time passes, and changes in property and buildings come with it. The breaking point occurred in the year one thousand eight hundred thirty-nine. It was this year that the object was transferred to the Teller family property. With the new owners came a new name under which we know the building today, the King of England. This change of name indicated a new beginning and a new era for the whole house. The Teller family, and specifically Josef Teller and František Teller, brought a new impulse into the building. The name of Josef Bernhardt younger appears in connection with the house. These people were the ones who shaped the fate of this place and made sure that the house became an important part of urban tissue.

Now, please pay attention to the architecture itself. Look carefully at the facade of the building that you see right in front of you. What you are seeing today is a very valuable example of early historism, in which the elements of Classicism are entangled. Historism was a style that inspired the beauty of the past, while Classicism brought order, balance and purity to architecture. Notice how noble and balanced the building is. It is important to know that the current form of the house is not the result of a single construction, but rather a long process of modification.

If you look at the total height of the building, you might wonder if it was always this high. Here brings us to the year one thousand eight hundred fifty-two. It was this year that a project was prepared that increased the building by one floor. This change has greatly affected its silhouette and has contributed to making the house such a significant dominance as we see today. In the second half of the nineteenth century there were further modifications of the facade which gave the house its final, elegant appearance. So look at the entire area of the facade and see how different layers of time and architectural ambitions of that time are mixed in.

In addition to his beauty, dům Král anglický also had very practical and social functions. In the past there was a Karlovy Vary Museum. So imagine that there were once rare objects, historical documents and works of art in the spaces you are now surrounding, which told the history of the entire region. The building thus served as a bridge between the past and the present for all visitors of the city. It was an institution that kept the memory of Karlovy Vary while being open to the general public.

Perhaps you are now wondering why this house is so special today. In addition to the fact that it forms the dominant position of the city centre, it is also accompanied by a very fresh report. Although the house has been standing for almost two years, its value was officially recognised in two thousand twenty-four. It was this year that the building was declared a cultural monument. This means that the state has recognised its irreplaceable importance for our history and architecture and has ensured that its form is protected for future generations. It is a beautiful recognition for a construction that has survived many decades and still fascinates us with its elegance.

Try to stop for a while and just watch the building quietly. Imagine how the city changed in front of her over the years, how the carriages passed by her, and later the first cars, how the fashion of the people who passed through her changed. The King of England's house is like a silent witness who saw take-offs and falls of the spa city. It is fascinating how one building can start as a centre of Polish culture, then turn into family property and eventually serve as a museum and a protected monument.

Now that you know the story of this house, its architectural details and the people associated with it, I suggest you go around the building and see it from different angles. Watch how the light changes on her facade and how the house is inscribed in the landscape of Castle Hill. Note how harmonically it fits into the surroundings, and yet it retains its unique identity.

This concludes a short chapter on the House of England. I hope this trip to history has helped you understand more what you see before you and that you have felt a deeper connection to the spirit of Karlovy Vary. This city still has many secrets waiting for its unveiling, and every other building you meet can hide as interesting a story as this one.

We now invite you to explore the beauty of our city. Continue your journey, discover new corners and be inspired by the atmosphere of this magical place. I wish you a pleasant rest of the day and many wonderful experiences during your next walks. Goodbye and enjoy Karlovy Vary.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring, the King of England wakes up in nature. The light is fine and scattered, which beautifully highlights the details of the old walls. The air is fresh, but it may be wet. I recommend you take several layers of clothing because the wounds are usually cold. It's the perfect time to visit, because people are short and you can look at this decrepit object without any unnecessary haste, but be careful about unstable construction.

Summer: In the summer months it is very hot in Karlovy Vary and the sun hits the roof of this repair state requiring a house. The atmosphere is lively and full of energy, but heat can be tiring. For the sake of large crowds, I suggest you come first thing in the morning before the biggest rush. Dress lightly and don't forget to drink to avoid fatigue.

Autumn: Autumn brings gold colors and deep shadows to the surroundings. The morning mist often covers this damaged house, which creates a mysterious and slightly sad mood. The roads can be slippery because of falling leaves, so wear firm shoes. The best is to come in the afternoon when the sun shines low and the colors are the most beautiful.

Winter: Zimą makes dům Král anglický very lonely in a freezing environment. The light is weak and the days are short, which gives the place a melancholy look. It is necessary to prepare for strong frost and snow, so choose a very warm jacket and shoes with good soles due to ice. Watch out for shorter opening times and cold, which can increase in the surroundings.
