The House U Řechický, formerly known as U elena, is at the heart of the Renaissance and Baroque township house no. 677 / II in Vodičkov Street in Prague in New Town. The object is remarkable with its layered architecture from goth to history. Since 1958, it has been protected as a cultural monument. The building is at a crossroads with Lazarska and Jungmann. It forms a square, which is a remnant of former Jewish gardens.

The first written mention of this Patrician house dates back to 1377-1379 when it was owned by the butcher Martin Salač. It was originally a vast Gothic courtyard. He occupied the area of seven later plots and reached the corner of Vodičkov and Skolská street. It was created during the time of the founding of Prague's New Town. Due to the proximity of the cattle market and the location of the later Lazarus Street here in the early days, mostly butchers and pennies were housed.

Architecturally, it's a four-wing building on a trapezoid-shaped parcel. From the Gothic period, arched cellars of stone masonry were preserved, the layout of the street tract and strong perimeter walls on the ground floor. The significant element is the two backs of the shield wall at the entrance. They reach half a meter into the sidewalk and perform a static function. The Renaissance tracks are combined windows and arches in the main tract and in the courtyard wings, where the masonry stacks are located. The Baroque period represents painted cover beams ceilings on the first floor of the street tract. After the fire of 1784, the house was modified in the spirit of classicism and the Mansard roof was built. The current external form reflects the reconstruction of J. Zika from 1836-1838 and the neo-Baroque facade from 1891. In the interior there are also visible Neo-Renaissance wall paintings of Josef Scheiwl from the second half of the 19th century.

The history of ownership is closely linked to the family of Greek. After Martin Salač and his son Paul's house was owned by the butcher Nábek and later by Ondrej od stag, who introduced the home sign U stag at the beginning of the 15th century. Renaissance reconstruction from 1560 and 1616 ties to Henry the Greek and his son Jiřík the Greek. Jiřík was a Protestant of nobility who joined the state uprising. He was executed on June 21, 1621 at the Old Town Square. In 1648, the house was attributed to the New Town Jesuits. It was then purchased in 1663 by Matouš František Chrostek from Angelberg, in 1738 by the organist Martin Janeček and later by the Houžvicova family.

One of the attractions of the object is the transformation into its use. There's a barrel bar in the multi-storey basement. In 1956, the Czech Fine Arts Fund set up the Young Gallery here. Later, the Gallery U Řecický operated here. On the ground floor there were long years of mycological counseling for the Czechoslovak Association of Gardeners.

Today the house serves mainly as a residential and commercial space. On the ground floor there is a bar and there are various service facilities in the yard wings. The building represents a valuable archive of Prague urbanism and building development since the end of the 14th century. Visiting this place allows you to observe authentic layers of Prague history in one object.

Welcome to the heart of New Town, where your steps have just stopped in front of the House of Talc, also known as the House of Deer. You are standing in front of a building that is a real witness to centuries of Prague history. When you look at her now, you see a house that combines different times and styles in its form. It's not just an ordinary building, but a layered story written in stone and mortar. Feel the atmosphere of this place, where once the fragrance of craft workshops and the noise of the old town's commercial activity were mixed.

Let's go back deep into time together until the end of the 14th century. The first written mention of this place dates from a thousand three hundred seven to a thousand three hundred seventy-nine. At that time, there was a patrician's house, which was the residence of a rich and influential township. The first of these owners was Martin Salač. Imagine what this place looked like in the early New Town when the city grew and buildings like this formed the basic skeleton of the city's core. Originally, it was a large Gothic courtyard, which was a typical way of building the house at a time when it did not end at just one facade, but included an interior space with buildings located around the courtyard.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. Although the house looks different today, under its surface is a fascinating development. If you could see through walls, you would see valuable Gothic and Renaissance vaults that survived centuries. Take a look at the overall form of the house and see how the various ages are mixed in. In the year one thousand and five hundred and sixty, the first major Renaissance reconstruction was conducted by Jindřich Řečický. The Renaissance brought more light and harmony to architecture. Later the Baroque style added to it, which added a new dynamic to the house.

An interesting moment in the history of the building was the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty-four. That's when the house was hit by a devastating fire. It is this tragic event that has led to another great change. After the fire followed the adaptation in the spirit of classicism, which was a style placing emphasis on moderation and clean lines. At this time, the Mansard roof, which you see above you today, was built. It's a typical element that gave the house its final profile. The entire building was declared a protected cultural monument thanks to its value in a thousand and nine hundred and fifty-eight so that future generations could admire this connection of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and historism.

When we think about the people who lived and worked here, the House of Speakers tells us stories of craft and power. As already mentioned, Martin Salač was a butcher. That means the house was closely connected to the butcher shop, which was the key mall for the city at the time. The building therefore served not only as a living space for the family, but also as a business place where people from around the area met.

Among the personalities associated with this house are names like Pavlov Salač or later Jindřich Řečický. But one of the stories is much darker. Let's remember the year one thousand six hundred twenty-one. In this year was executed nobleman Jiřík Řečický z Řečice. His execution took place in the Old Town Square, but the shadow of this event also hit this house and family of Greek. It is fascinating how one building can also be a symbol of artisanal prosperity and the tragic fate of noble generations. Over time, there were other people like Matouš František Chrostek, Martin Janeček and Josef Scheiwl, each of whom left their mark in the history of this place.

Now I'm going to lead you to some interesting things that make this house something special. Note that the house is remarkable by its layery. It's like a book where every chapter represents a different century. If you're interested in what's hidden deep beneath your feet, know that there's a place in the Gothic cellars today called the Bar at the barrel. It's a beautiful contrast where modern social life takes place in spaces that are remembered in the Middle Ages.

Another curiosity ties to the ground floor of the house. For many years there was a mycological consultancy of the Czechoslovak Association of Gardeners. Mycology is a science of mushrooms. So imagine that in a house where butchers and nobles once ruled, people later consulted on the cultivation and recognition of mushrooms. It's a small but sweet detail that shows how the functions of buildings in urban space change with the times.

Today, when you look at the facade of the House of Greek, you see not only the walls, but the resulting work of many people, including architect J. Zika. Feel this house as a bridge between the past and the present. From the first stone laid in the fourteenth century to the Renaissance expansion, baroque pomp, Classicist moderation to today's conservation status.

Imagine how many generations of people have gone through you, how many shops have been closed here and how many secret conversations have taken place in his shadows. The House of Greece remains a silent observer of the history of Prague, which today allows us to look into our history.

I hope this short trip over time has helped you better understand the importance of this place. You can now rest in your New Town walk. I recommend looking again, seeing the details of the roof and thinking of all these people, from Martin Salač to Jiřík Ráčický, who left their life story behind. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant rest of the day in our beautiful city.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon when the sun hits the facade of the house at an angle that best highlights the details of the old buildings. As it is a residential building, we recommend to be quiet in the vicinity and respect the privacy of residents.

You can reach the place by car or public transport; Check the specific connection and stop options in the current search engine. Due to the location in the city centre we recommend to use public transport.

You don't need special equipment for an outdoor tour, you just need comfortable shoes to walk through the city. We recommend that you take a map of New Town with you so that you can easily navigate between the surrounding streets.

For best photos, focus on facade details and historical elements of the house. The best light for outside images is during the golden hour before sunset. Photographs from pavements in the surrounding streets so as not to interfere with other walkers.

Within a short walk around you can visit Square on the site of the former Jewish garden, Charles Square or take a walk through the streets of Lazarská, Jungmannova and Vodičkov. For families with children is the ideal way out of the house towards Charles Square, where there is more room for movement.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding greenery awaken and the city gains a fresh look. The soft spring light pleasantly highlights the facade details. We recommend visiting the place in the morning when the air is the cleanest. Layer clothing is suitable to protect against changing weather.

Summer brings bright sun and high temperatures that illuminate the color of the building. Streets are full of people, therefore it is best to choose the time early in the morning or late in the evening when the cold is more pleasant. Don't forget light fabrics and a sun hat.

The atmosphere becomes melancholy in autumn and the surroundings are decorated with colorful leaves. The low sun creates long shadows, which is ideal for observing architecture from the outside. It is advisable to carry a waterproof jacket and fixed shoes for walks in the old town.

In winter, the building is cozy, especially during the Advent period, when the city lights up. Freezing air and possible snow give the monument a unique character. Hot winter clothes, gloves and hats are essential to make the streets pleasant even at low temperatures.
