Fuglhaus, also called Fuglhauz or Flukhauz, is a vanished castle in the South Bohemian Region. It is located approximately one and a half kilometers from the municipality of Klec, above the Klec pond, at an elevation of four hundred twenty-five meters. Since nineteen sixty-three it has been protected as a cultural monument.
The municipality of Klec appears for the first time in written sources in the year thirteen eighty-three. At that time it belonged to the lords of Stráže. The castle was probably built by its next owner, Oldřich of Ústí, sometime after thirteen ninety-five. In fourteen ten, Jan of Ústí purchased the castle. His descendants then hid bandits in the castle who caused damage on the Rožmberg estates. This was ended only by Oldřich the Second of Rožmberka, who conquered and burned the castle in fourteen thirty-five.
The damaged castle, however, did not remain in ruins. Jan of Ústí regained it and had it repaired. Soon after, the castle belonged to the lords of Stráže, who incorporated it into the Stráže estate after fourteen sixty-five. As late as fifteen ninety-six it was described as a castle in good condition. Only then was it finally abandoned. In the nineteenth century, part of the rock on which it stood was quarried away due to the construction of the nearby Bašta.
From the castle to the present day, only terrain irregularities in the form of ramparts and ditches and a small piece of wall have been preserved. The adjacent pond played an important role in the defense. At the same time it supplied water to the water-filled ditch beyond the outer rampart. An inner rampart, approximately semicircular in shape, protected the castle core. Between the two ramparts the outer ward probably extended. The core may have also been surrounded by a palisade, though more precise information about its appearance is lacking. During archaeological excavations, a number of ceramic fragments were found here.
