Hotel U Beránka in Náchod is a Art Nouveau building on Masaryk Square. It combines the function of the hotel and city theatre. It was built in 1912-1914. The building is a protected cultural monument and represents an important example of the architecture of the top Art Nouveau with rich art decoration.

The history of the building dates back to 1889. At that time the city of Náchod bought a inn at the Golden Lamb and converted it into a theatre and social hall which opened in 1892. However, due to insufficient maintenance and safety risks, the city council in the early 20th century considered demolition. After the architectural competition from 1911, the original building and neighbouring hotel Letzel were demolished. This created a larger area for new construction. Despite the protests of the inhabitants against the cost of the project, the construction started in 1912 according to the design by Alois Čenski. The construction was carried out by builders from Hradec Kralove: Josef Novotný, Josef Fčěk and František Černý. The café and restaurants were opened in February 1914 and the theatre in April of the same year.

The building is set on a slope rising towards the castle and has a very rugged ground plan. It stands on the etwa meter high granite barefoot suspect. The main facade is made of a plaster of artificial stone and the whole building is closed by a Mansard roof. The architecture is characteristic of asymmetry, which can be seen at both the entrance portal and the bay through two floors. In the upper part of the portal there are two statues representing the allegory of the theatre with mask and music with lyre, above them is a city emblem. The facade is complemented by Hotel U Beránka and Café and restaurant under the first floor ledge. There is a red and white mosaic in the right shield with the inscription "Dr. J. Chezek City Theatre" and in the left shield relief of a lying lamb.

Art decor is very valuable. The sculpture and stucco elements were created by Josef Bakárek. The large hall was painted by Karel Ludvik Klusáček and the small hall Josef Wenig. Láďa Novák designed the likeness of the People's Restaurant and the curtain from Mikoláš Alš was hung into the stage. The metal railing is the work of the royal forwarders Jan Rabas and Ilji Radulovich.

The owner of the building is the city of Náchod. After the death of Mayor JUDr. Josef Čížek, who promoted the implementation of the construction, the theatre was renamed the Municipal Theatre of Dr. Josef Čížek in 1934. The building has been a protected cultural monument since 1958. In 1989- 1994 she underwent complete reconstruction and enlargement according to the design of Martin Sedlák.

Important events include the stay of T. G. Masaryka in the Presidential Suite in 1926. In 2011, Václav Havel was housed in the hotel together with the shooting crew of the film Leaving.

The building still fulfils its original function as a hotel and theatre. Thanks to the combination of unique Art Nouveau architecture and significant personalities, the object represents a fundamental cultural value. Visiting this place offers the opportunity to experience the authentic atmosphere of the early 20th century.

Welcome to Náchod. Right now, you're facing one of the most beautiful and important buildings in the city. Take a look at this impressive piece of construction that will impress you with its elegance and expansion at first glance. It is Hotel U Beránka, a place where hospitality with high art is bound from the beginning. It is a building that combines two completely different functions, which is quite unusual in our region. Under one roof you will find a hostel for passengers and city theatre, which makes this place the real cultural heart of the city.

Now let's go back a little bit in time to understand how it happened. Imagine this place over a century ago. There was an original inn and a hotel called Letzel. But at the beginning of the twentieth century, it was decided that it was time for something much more ambitious. The construction of this current building began in the year of nine and twelve. The whole project was the work of architects Alois Čensky and Martin Sedlák. The work lasted two years and the building was completely completed in the year nine and fourteen. Just this year, a cafe, a restaurant opened and the theatre operation officially started to work. It was a real leap in the quality of urban life, because Náchod thus gained space that served not only to rest, but also to enrich the people in spirit.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. The building is built in Art Nouveau style, which you will find especially after its light, smooth and very decorative appearance. Note that the building is not symmetrical. Its breakdown is deliberately asymmetric, which gives it dynamism and modern character, which was very desirable at the time. Look carefully at the facade, the front wall of the house that welcomes you. If you take a closer look at the details, you'll see a rich art decoration. Notice the statues that decorate the facade here and symbolically represent the theatre and music. It's a clear signal to anyone who comes in here, that it's in a house of culture. In addition to these characters, you will also find a city emblem and a very nice detail, which is a relief, that is, an exiting image, representing a lying lamb. It is this detail that gives the building its name and gives it some charm and humanity.

If you admire the exterior look like that, you might be interested in who's been living in these walls. Hotel U Beránka is not just a beautiful box, but it is a place with a rich history visited by people with huge influence on our history. Let's transfer to the year nine hundred and twenty-six. In the presidential suite, which is reserved for the most important guests, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of our own state, was staying here. Imagine the atmosphere where there were discussions in these rooms about the future of the young republic. But history continued here in much more recent times. Two thousand eleven years ago, Václav Havel took refuge here. But he wasn't alone, he was accompanied by a whole film group, who was shooting a picture here called Leaving. It is fascinating to think that in one building there are traces of two such fundamental personalities of our history, who, while living in other times, have left a deep mark in our understanding of freedom and democracy.

Now I want to take you to one of the interesting things that's hidden inside, in the theater area. Even if you're out now, try to imagine the space of the stage. In the past, a curtain was hung, created by the famous painter Mikoláš Alš. The idea that the heroes of theatrical plays appeared and disappeared behind the screen from such a master gives this place an even greater artistic dimension. It is a beautiful proof that during the construction of the hotel and theatre there was no saving and were looking for the best possible creators of the time.

It is fascinating that even after over a century, the building still fulfils its original function. While many other historical buildings have changed into museums or offices, Hotel U Beránka still offers accommodation to passengers and still lures viewers to its theatre. It is a living monument that breathes history, but at the same time it is fully integrated into the present life of Náchoda. It is protected as a cultural monument, which means that its unique appearance and details will be preserved for future generations.

Looking at this building we realize how powerful the privacy of a hotel guest with the public of the theatre screen is. From presidential visits to film crews, from quiet hotel rooms to applause in the theatre hall. It all forms a single, unique place.

I hope you're interested in this short trip to the history of Hotel U Beránka and that you've noticed all the little details that make the building a real jewel of Art Nouveau architecture. You can now continue your Náchod walk in peace, possibly stop and revisit the details on the facade we talked about. You may be tempted by a visit to a local cafe where you can imagine people sitting here a century ago watching the rhythm of the city. Thank you for your attention and I wish you the rest of the day in our beautiful city. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The building is best visited during autumn or spring months, when the city's colors are softer and architecture stands out in natural light. For transportation to the city centre use a passenger car or public connections; Check the current traffic options in the Internet search engine.

We recommend taking a quality camera with us when visiting. The best pictures of the facade in Art Nouveau style can be taken during the morning or late afternoon sun, which will highlight the details of the building. Focus on views from different street angles to capture the total size of the building.

In the immediate vicinity is Náchod Castle, which is an ideal complement to the journey behind architecture and history. For families with children, we recommend a tour of the surroundings of the building and a story about how the hostel and theatre work in one building, which often attracts children.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the surrounding area of the building awakens into colours and fresh air accompanies the first walks through the city. The best is to visit the place in the morning when the light is fine. We recommend light spring coats and shoes suitable for walking on the city pavement.

In the summer months, the clear sun and hot air dominated the space, which creates rich shadows on the facade. Due to high temperatures it is advisable to leave early in the morning or at dusk to avoid heat. Practical is lightweight cotton and hat for head.

Autumn brings golden leaves to Náchod and a specific fog that gives the building a mysterious touch. The atmosphere is quieter and the light becomes golden. Layer clothes and waterproof shoes for wet days are suitable.

Winter season is characterized by freezing air and a short day when the building excels in lighting street lamps. In Advent Time, expectation and peace rule. It is necessary to wear a warm sweater, wool caps and gloves.
