The Hussite choir Jiří z Poděbrad in the village Tmaň, the district of Beroun, is a modernist sacral building from 1925-1926, designed by architect František Šebík. Since 2017 it has been protected as a monument and stands out with its neoclassical eastern facade in the shape of a winning arch. This building represents an effort by the Czechoslovak Hussite Church to find a uniform architectural form of its choirs and is one of three similar structures in the Central Bohemia region.

The formation of the congregation was related to the action of the vicar Antonín Koula, classmate and friend of Patriarch Karl Farsky. The first service of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church took place on 25 December 1920 in St. George's Church. After the transfer of Antonín Koula and most parishioners to this church, the return of the church to the Catholic Church in 1924 followed, which carried the services to the local school. In October 1925, the board of elders purchased land from a local landlady. Several projects were developed for the construction, including František Šubrta and Matìj Šubrta, but architect František Šebík was selected for the implementation. The budget amounted to CZK 510 474.04. The base stone was laid on April 26, 1925. The lack of funding has led to a rework of the project to include the Colombarium, bell tower and vicar's rectory.

The church stands on a slope in the northern part of the village on the corner of the streets of the Builders and Tiles. It is a rectangular brick building with a mansard roof and a prism tower which consists of two interconnected rectangles in the east-west direction. The main entrance with a representative staircase is headed for the street Táždá. The eastern facade is conceived as a winning arch with a low shield and a pair of pilavers on the sides. On the ground floor there is a hall, above which is a balcony on the floor. On the top of the shield there is a massive metal belt and on the roof of the tower tin chalice with forged cross. Facades are framed by a stone suspect and a fabion crown ledge. The building includes a large garden with economic facilities in the southwest.

The interior is designed as a three-boat basilica with a priesthood, separated from the hall by a winning arch and equipped with a wooden circle. The hall has a capacity of 120 seats and is lit by two five side windows. In the priesthood is the original table of the Lord with a wooden balustard and wood carving from John's Gospel from 1986, the work of Milan Šustka. The top of the interior decoration is a three-metre wooden cross with a shining cup and a white host. Wooden equipment, including benches, singer and luminaire holders, was prepared by the carpenter Břetislav Kreisinger. In the hall there are commemorative boxes: in 1928 a finger from Zborov was inserted into the niche and in 1946 fragments of masonry from Lidice.

In 1926 four bells were installed in the tower from Prague bell tower Arnost Depolt, of which only the smallest with the chalice remained in the church, the others were recited in 1942. The organ was installed in 1947, previously served a rented harmonium. In the 1970s, the facade was repaired and the tower windows were replaced with luxury ones. After 2003, the fence and the entrance walls were repaired. In 2015, the reconstruction of the vicar's apartment began and in 2016 the roof was replaced and the tower was supported.

The Hussite choir of Jiří z Poděbrad is an important example of interwar sacral architecture and evidence of religious development in the region. The construction offers an interesting insight into the aesthetics of the first republic thanks to its neoclassical form and preserved equipment. Visiting this monument-protected object allows the study of a unique combination of modernism and religious symbolism.

Welcome to Tmani. Stop for a moment, take a breath and look ahead. You're standing in front of a building that tells a story in the silence of this country about finding a new identity, about believing and the courage to start over. The husitský sbor Jiřího z Poděbrad stands before you. At first glance, you may perceive calm and sobriety, but if you look closely, you will see a structure that, at the time of its creation, was an expression of modern thought and desire for something new. It's a place where spiritual need meets architectural discipline.

In order to understand why this building is even standing here, we need to go back more than a hundred years in our minds, until a separate Czechoslovakia was born. It was a time of great hope and profound change. Just in the year nine hundred twenty, the first service of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church took place in Tmani. Imagine the atmosphere back then. People were looking for a way to believe that would be closer to their own nation, which would speak their language and refer to the traditions of John Hus. This new church didn't just want to copy old habits, but it was looking for its own way, even in what its temples would look like.

This desire for its own face led to the fact that nine hundred and twenty-five years ago, the building's base stone was ceremonially laid before you. It was not just a building made of stone and mortar, but a symbol of a new beginning for the whole village. The project was taken by architect František Šebík. His task was not just to build a functional space for prayer, but to create something that would mirror the values of the new era. The construction was completed in the year nine hundred twenty-six and has since been a spiritual centre.

Now please pay attention to the architecture itself. Look at the overall shape of the building. It is a modernist sacral structure, which means it avoids unnecessary decorations and bets on the purity of lines and a clear purpose. Architect František Šebík worked here with principles that at that time meant progress. Note especially the eastern facade. It's the most distinctive part of the building that probably caught your eye when you arrived. This facade is performed in neoclassical style and has a very specific shape of a winning arch.

Stop by this detail. A triumphant arch is a symbol that we know from ancient times, from the great empires. Here, however, it serves a different purpose. It is meant to create a sense of triumph, but not of military triumph, but of spirit and faith. It's a gateway that separates the everyday world outside from the sacred space inside. This architectural element is crucial for understanding the entire congregation. It represents an effort by the then church to find a unified architectural form that is recognizable, dignified and modern. Feel how this arch dominates the facade and gives stability and grandeur to the entire building.

However, this building is not only about architecture, but above all about people. The formation of the congregation in Tmani is closely linked to the pastor Antonín Koula. He was a man who worked with great commitment in the community and helped the Corps in the early years become a solid part of local life. Imagine him walking through these roads, communicating with the locals and making sure this place becomes a home for all who seek escape and meaning. In the background of the movement was the personality of Karl Farsky, a spiritual leader who laid the foundations of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. Although Karel Farský was not here in Tmani personally every day, his vision of the national church and his return to the Hussite values permeates every stone of this building.

It's fascinating to think how the great historical currents interconnected in this small place. On the one hand the desire for national independence, on the other hand the personal dedication of people like Antonín Koula and the visionary architecture of architect František Šebík. All together, it created this unique object that carries the trail of the first republic.

You may be wondering why this building is so valued today. For years, it was seen as part of a common landscape, but time revealed its true value. In the year two thousand seventeen, the building was officially declared a protected monument. This means that the state has acknowledged that the Hussite Choir in Tmani is not just a local church, but an architectural and historical unique one that we must protect for future generations. It is a recognition that the attempt to find a new, uniform form for sacral architecture during the interwar period was successful here.

Now if you look at the building again, try to see more than just the walls. Try to see the courage of the people who decided to go their own way in the year nine hundred and twenty. Note how neoclassical elements of the winning arch contradict the simplicity of the modernist approach. It's like a conversation between the past and the future. This building reminds us that faith and culture are constantly evolving and that even in a small village a work can be created that is of national significance.

Now imagine the silence in this space. Even if you stand outside, you can feel the room radiating from the building. It is a place of meditation and peace, which in today's rush world gains in value. It is this ability to stop time and give a man space to think about is the greatest gift this congregation gives us.

Now I encourage you to slowly walk around the entire building. Feel its proportions, watch how the light hits the facade and how the building is inscribed in the surrounding territory of Tmani. Imagine that day in the year nine hundred twenty-five, when the foundation stone was laid with great joy and hope. It was a moment of belonging when people united around a common goal.

Thank you for accompanying me on this short trip to the history of the Hussite choir Jiří of Podebrad. I hope you found not only an interesting architectural detail in this building, but a piece of the story about people who wanted to create something new and true. You are now left in silence and contemplation. Explore the surroundings, perceive the atmosphere of this place and be inspired by its history. I wish you a pleasant continuation in your discovery of the beauty of our country. Goodbye.
