Kotýz, also known as the Castle, is an archaeological site near Tmana in Beroun district in Central Bohemia. Located on platform Kotýz on the western edge of the Golden Horse hill and is protected as a cultural monument. The fort was already inhabited in the late Bronze period, in the period of the Halštate and Hradištní. The history of this place dates from prehistoric to early medieval, which makes it important.

The historical context of Kotýze enriches the assumption that there was a pagan prophecy. This view was expressed by Václav Krolmus in the nineteenth century. The first archaeological research was carried out by Břetislav Jelínek in the early 1980s. In the first decades of the twentieth century, Jan Axamit continued its research. The time of the fortification remains uncertain, as there was no survey of its fortification. The findings from the area of the castle confirm the settlement of the location in the late days of the bronze, Halštat and Hradiste.

The Kotýze architecture is characterized by the remains of the fortifications. The castle with an area of 4.9 hectares is located at an altitude of 360- 412 metres on the west edge of the Golden Horse spine. Although the area of the fort was destroyed by erosion, the remains of the protective structures were preserved. Due to steep limestone rock walls with an elevation of up to 42 metres, fortification on the south and west sides was not needed. The north side had a symbolic fortification, which served rather as a protective element along the top of the spine. The best preserved section consists of 65 meters long wall of free-covered stones. On the east side, stronger structures were preserved in the form of two waves. The older outer stone wall measures 240 metres in length, 1.5 metres in height and four to five metres in width. It is co-operated by a younger inner wall of 110 metres long. Its width is between five and seven metres and height is 2.3 metres. Both structures have a stone core.

Kotýz is part of the national natural monument Kotýz, which increases its value and meaning. The location is available after a yellow marked tourist route from the crossroads of Havlíček's mills to the so-called Jelínek Gate and the Koneprussian caves. It offers visitors the opportunity to explore not only historical remains, but also beautiful natural landscapes. For those interested in prehistoric times and early Middle Ages in Bohemia, Kotýz is a valuable place to visit.

This archaeological complex represents an important part of Czech history. It offers a unique view of the life and culture of people who lived here in the prehistoric and early Middle Ages. Visiting this place is also an opportunity to discover the beauty of Central Bohemia.

Welcome to the place where time has stopped and where the earth under your footsteps becomes a living book of history. Right now, you're standing on the edge of the Golden Horse, in a place called Kotýz. If you look around you, you'll see a vast platform that rises above the Thane area. Feel this atmosphere, this calm and feeling of isolation that this peak offers. It is this strategic position, this elevated platform that has made this place a home for many generations of people long before the first chronicles began to be written. Can you feel the power of this place? It is a space that has been observed for thousands of years from a height, a space that offers security and insight over the surrounding landscape.

Let us now move further into the past together to understand why this place is so special. Kotýz is not just an ordinary piece of earth. It's a fortress that tells the story of the incredible persistence of human settlements. This area was inhabited in the late Bronze Age, which means that people were building their homes and communities here at a time when the world had just learned to work with metals. It followed the period of the Hallatians, which brought new ways of life and new technologies, and then the period of the rampart. Imagine the people who lived here, who were meeting here, who were here looking for protection. Every layer of earth you see under you now contains fragments of their existence. It's not just dirt, it's a millennium sediment that allows us to understand how society changed, how people's needs changed and how the landscape itself changed.

Now pay attention to what you see around you. Even if you don't see tall walls, monumental gates or stone towers that might seem to you at first sight, the architecture of this place is hidden in the very shape of the landscape. Note how the Kotýz platform naturally adapts to the edges of the Golden Horse top. This geometry of the terrain was the main building part of the castle. The people of the past used what nature had given them and modified it to serve them. See how the terrain lines change and how this rise differs from the surrounding valleys. This natural architecture was their greatest protection. Even if only traces in the country are visible today, in your imagination, you can have the lines that once defined the boundaries of their world. Feel the invisible structure that still exists here that determines how we move around this place.

However, in order to be sure about this place, we need to look at those who took care of its detection. The first important archaeological research was carried out here by Břetislav Jelínek, which laid the foundations for our fresh knowledge. Later, Jan Axamit joined this effort, which contributed to the fact that Kotýz stopped being just an unknown place and became an important archaeological site. Thanks to their patience and precision, we now know that this place was of absolute importance in the times of the bronze and iron era. Their work was like composing a broken mosaic where every piece of shard or carbon found helped us understand the wider context of life in this region.

But there is one other thing that makes Kotýz a special place, something that goes beyond purely scientific knowledge and that comes across the line between history and myth. Did you know that this place was associated with something much deeper than just living space? Václav Krolmus, a character who entered the history of this place in a very specific way, believed that Kotýz was the site of pagan prophecies. Imagine this - at a time when people were trying to understand celestial bodies, natural forces and destiny, there were probably rituals. Perhaps the old prophets here sought answers to questions that today's humanity had long forgotten to ask. This idea gives this castle a mystical quite that still resonates in it. Although modern science seeks evidence in material subjects, the spiritual dimension of this place remains one of the greatest mysteries Kotýz has to offer. It's the elusive atmosphere you feel when you stand in the silence of this hill.

Now, I want to urge you to move on. Let yourself drift through this place, explore its edges, perceive its silence, and try in spirit to reconstruct those lives that once were part of everyday life. Kotýz won't tell you everything at once, but if you observe how light changes on this platform and how the terrain is inserted into the surrounding landscape, maybe you will find your own way of connecting with this history. Thank you for choosing to visit this important cultural heritage. We wish you a pleasant journey in the footsteps of the past and hope that Kotýz will leave an unforgettable impression on you. We say goodbye, but the history of this place remains alive, waiting for anyone who has the willingness to look at it with a more attentive eye.

Tips for visitors

For the best experience we recommend a visit in spring or autumn months, when the weather is mild and surrounding nature offers a quieter atmosphere to explore archaeological sites.

Since it is an archaeological site in the natural terrain, we recommend to bring comfortable shoes and drinking water. For families with children the visit is interesting mainly thanks to the possibility of discovering traces of ancient history in nature, which may be an exciting adventure for the smallest family members.

If you are interested in photography, the best views of the surroundings can be obtained from elevated points near the Golden Horse Hill, where the panorama of the surrounding landscape can be captured. The best time for pictures of the sights and nature is during the morning hours or shortly before sunset, when light is softer.

If you have more time, you can extend your travels to other interesting places around. There are National Natural Monument Kotýz and also Koneprusské caves, which represent an excellent addition to your historical and natural tour.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings awakening nature and fresh green, which slowly covers the remains of ancient walls. The atmosphere is full of hope and fine spring light that highlights the details of the terrain. We recommend moisture-resistant shoes because the roads can be thawed after thawing. The best place to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months they dominate the sites of dense trees and intense sun, which creates a game of shadows on rocks. The air is hot, and the space seems calm until it's sleepy. Due to the high season and high temperatures, come first thing in the morning to avoid the greatest heat and possible groups of visitors. Don't forget enough fluids and light, breathable clothes.

Autumn Kotýz turns into a melancholy place surrounded by golden and red leaves. The frequent fog gives the ruins a mysterious touch and highlights their historical depth. Layer clothing is suitable to protect you from changing weather. For the best photos, select late afternoon when the sun falls low above the horizon.

The winter season reveals the true form of ruins because the absence of leaves allows you to see the entire space of the site. Freezing air and any layer of snow create a quiet, almost sacral atmosphere. It is necessary to have warm and waterproof clothing and fixed footwear with anti-slip sole. Due to the short days, plan to visit in the morning so that daylight is sufficient.
