Kanálová ulička is an unofficially named interblock link in Liberec that connects Širokou and Prague. She gained her unique mark thanks to a large number of channel hatches placed in her tile.

Tomáš Hasil is behind the creation of this place, which has its registered office in the location. The inspiration for him was a hatch with a Liberec emblem that the water company placed in the alley. During his travels in the Republic, Hasil noticed how these elements complement the nature of public space. That led him to the idea of creating the Canal Lane in 2002.

The project was implemented by Tomáš Hasil and later by the G300 association, created in 2006. The association addressed cities in the Czech Republic and abroad with a request to donate hatches. These are then inserted into the alley. In the previous phase, Hasil agreed with the owners of the various parts of the sidewalk and obtained their consent.

From the point of view of technical design, the aisle serves as a functional interlock link. The specific element is the gradual installation of donated hatches to the surface. As of March 2024 there are approximately 100 pieces, but only four of them are operational.

The project is accompanied by the website of civilization. info that Tomáš Hasil founded. This page contains a photo gallery from contributors, which serves as a world atlas of channel hatches.

Today Kanálová ulička is available as a public link between two streets. It is an interesting place for visitors, which attracts aesthetics of elements of public space. This unofficial monument offers a unique view of the details of urban infrastructure from different corners of the world.

Welcome to the heart of Liberec, New Town. You've just entered a place that looks like an ordinary interlock link at first glance, but when you look closer, you're welcomed by an absolutely unusual appearance. You're standing in Channel Lane. It is a narrow passageway, which inconspicuously connects Širokou Street and Prague Street. If you look down now, you'll see something you won't find in the ordinary urban environment. Instead of a single tile, you will be surrounded by a fascinating mosaic of metal circles. They're channel hatches that make up the main character of this place. Feel this strange atmosphere where the common elements of urban infrastructure have turned into an open gallery under your feet.

Let us now stop at how this unique place happened. It all began more than two decades ago, namely in the year two thousand and two. That was when an idea was born, which at that time may have been perceived as eccentric, but for its creator, it made a profound sense. The main tractor and visionary of the project was the local entrepreneur Tomáš Hasil. His passionate approach to the details of public space led him to think that even so banal things like the shaft covers could have their aesthetic value. The inspiration for him was a specific hatch with a Liberian emblem that impressed him with his appearance and symbolism. Tomáš Hasil realized that these elements map the history and appearance of cities, and decided to collect them and present them in one place.

Now, when you slowly move deeper into the alley, pay full attention to the surface below your steps. Notice how these hatches are located in the tile. It's not random chaos, it's an elaborate project that aims to show beauty in what we usually ignore. Follow the details on each piece. You will find different shapes, patterns and inscriptions here. It's a fascinating study of metal and cast iron. Notice that every hatch tells its own story about where it came from. Some are simple, others are decorative and complex. In this contrast lies the magic of this alley. It's a space where an industrial element becomes an artistic object.

The key character without which this place would not exist is Tomáš Hasil. His personal passion culminated in the year two thousand and six by setting up a sorority called G three hundred. This association was not founded for commercial purposes but as a tool for collecting donated hatches. Thanks to the activities of this association, the aisle gradually filled up. Tomáš Hasil has become a link between people, cities and this particular location in Liberec. Its creation is proof that one man's passion can change the perception of the entire inner block and turn it into a tourist attraction that attracts people with its unshakefulness.

Now I'm going to bring you to one really interesting fact, which may cause your amazement or even a slight confusion. Look around you at these tenths of metal discs. By March of the year two thousand twenty-four there are approximately one hundred hatches. And now comes the greatest mystery of this place. Although they look like functional parts of a sewer, of all these hatches, there are only four. Most of them serve here purely as decorative elements, as exhibited exhibits. They're only embedded here for their aesthetic value. These hatches don't come from one source. They were donated from different cities throughout the Czech Republic as well as from abroad. So imagine that in one small Liberec alley you can basically make your way across Europe, just follow the inscriptions and markings on the metal.

It's fascinating to think of how many roads these objects must have traveled before they became part of the Liberec pavement. Each of them was once part of a sidewalk in another city where thousands of people crossed it every day without being noticed. Here, however, they are at the center of attention. This alley teaches us that beauty can be found in the least likely places if we just change our perspective on the world.

Let us now slowly finish our short walk. I hope you enjoyed this unusual trip to the world of metal hatches. Kanálová ulička is a small but important example of how a personal initiative can change the space around us. It is a place that encourages us to stop and to carefully monitor the details that usually escape us in a daily rush.

I invite you to walk the aisle once more at your own pace. Try to find all four functional hatches, or try to decipher which cities the other hatches come from. Feel the silence of this interblock in contrast to the bustle of the surrounding streets of Šuroká and Prague. Let yourself be guided by your curiosity and examine every inch of this metal map.

Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant rest of the day in our beautiful Liberec. Enjoy the further discovery of the city and its hidden treasures. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during a bright day when the sun lights the way and highlights the details on metal hatches. You can reach the alley on foot, by car or by city transport; Check the current connection in electronic maps. For photography it is best to focus the lens to the ground, especially at a time when the sun creates interesting shadows in a narrow space. Take your mobile phone or camera with you to capture the details. For families with children the tour is as fun as a game to find different shapes and symbols on the hatches.

For kids

Imagine going back to the time the nobles ruled here and the castle was their fortress. It was a large building with towers and walls that protected the people from their enemies.

Where would you live at the time? It would be in a big hallway or one of many rooms. We should see tables, beds, and maybe some of the old objects left over from past castle residents.

There was a lot of interesting stuff. One of them was a big hole in the ground that led to the basement. That's a real magic thing! Imagine climbing the stairs and discovering the secret of the castle.

Themed route

Since no other surrounding points are listed, I propose a route within the area itself:

1. Kanálová ulička - main target. Walk through the unique architecture and atmosphere of this historic part. 2. The immediate vicinity of the alley - a tour of the details of the buildings and surrounding houses, which form the character of this place.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the area of the alley awakens to life and the new green gives the place a fresh look. The light is soft in this period, which is ideal for observing details from the outside. Light, layered clothing is recommended and a visit in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months, clear sun and hot air dominate space. The atmosphere is relaxed, but due to intense heat it is best to find a place in early morning or late evening. Don't forget the comfortable shoes and the sun hat.

Autumn brings colorful leaves to the aisle and a specific melancholy mood. The lighting is gilding and drier weather encourages you to walk in a warm coat or sweater. It's a good time to think more calmly about the history of a place without a summer rush.

Zimą space turns into a quiet and freezing place that can be covered by snow. The atmosphere is strict but cozy, especially in advent time. It is necessary to wear warm winter clothes, gloves and shoes with anti-slip soles to keep the walk safe.
