The Binding Prison Liberec, located in the New Town of Liberec II-Nové Město, is a historical monument built in 1877. This building, characteristic of the Tuscan style, was originally the seat of the Liberec Regional Court and is now a cultural monument for the purpose of accommodating convicted and accused persons. Its history also witnessed the urban and social development of Liberec in the 19th century, when the Czech countries were part of Austria-Hungary.

The detention prison was established during the period of intensive industrialisation and urbanisation of Europe, which affected its architectural design. Built in Tuscan style, the building reflected the aesthetic and functional requirements of such institutions. It originally served as the seat of the Liberec Regional Court and later became a detention facility, reflecting its adaptability to the changing needs of society.

The architecture of the detention prison is characteristic of Tuscan style, which was a common architectural style in the 19th century. After 2003, the building underwent a major reconstruction involving modernisation of the security system and capacity expansion. Today, it has specialised departments for different types of prisoners, allowing it to function more effectively.

After 2003 there was a significant reconstruction and reprofiling of the detention prison. In July 2004, 375 persons acquired accommodation capacity, of which 123 for the exercise of custody and 252 for the execution of prison sentences. Almost 60 beds are designed for the entrance and income department, while the output department has 14 beds. In 2008, a specialised unit was established for prisoners with behavioural disorders with a capacity of 21 convicted.

Security systems have also been modernised by the reconstruction. The detention prison is now equipped with over 90 cameras, electronic locks and a signalling system for broken window glass. The modern operating centre allows a continuous overview of the events throughout the building.

Reprofiling the prison also meant changing the functioning of the prisoners. A team of employees needed to be replenished and a suitable background built up. Prisoners can now benefit from various leisure activities such as two gyms, a multi-purpose walking yard and a wood-modeling workshop. In one day, 150 prisoners can participate in approximately 20 leisure activities.

A significant component of dynamic security is the meaningful fulfilment of prisoners' free time. In addition to sports activities are offered educational, handicraft and relaxation rings. There is a well-equipped library and video set. Since 2003, prisoners have also been able to use the chapel associated with club spaces.

The Liberec detention prison is not only a place where punishment is carried out, but also an institution dedicated to resocialisation. Regular actions outside the prison and cooperation with NSAs shall contribute to this purpose. Prisons are particularly focused on young and young adults under 26.

Today vazební věznice Liberec is not only a cultural monument, but also a modern device focused on resocialization. Her history and current function make her interesting for visiting, especially for those who want to understand the complexity of the modern detention system and its role in society. Liberec Binding Prison is an example of how a historical building can be adapted to current needs while retaining its cultural value.

Let's dive into its origins. The prison was founded as a seat of the Liberec Regional Court, which reflected the urban and social development of Liberec in the 19th century.
