The Chapel of Saint Cross is a baroque chapel located in the northeast wing of Lipová Castle, situated in the rural area of Lipová within Ústecký kraj. Constructed in the mid-18th century, it served as a private prayer space for the noble family residing at the castle. Notable for its modest design and historical significance, it reflects the baroque architectural style prevalent during Habsburg rule in Bohemia. Despite suffering significant damage over time, restoration efforts are underway for both the chapel and the surrounding castle.

The origins of the Chapel of Saint Cross trace back to 1737 when construction began on a new baroque castle under Leopold Antonín Salm-Reifferscheidt's direction. This project was part of broader cultural and architectural developments influenced by European baroque styles, reflecting the era's artistic trends. Designed by Girolamo Costa and built by Zacharias Hoffmann, the chapel has remained largely unchanged since its construction, maintaining its original layout without significant modifications.

Architecturally, the Chapel of Saint Cross is characterized by simplicity. Situated on the first floor of the castle’s northeast wing, it was the only vaulted room in an otherwise flat-roofed section of the building. The chapel spans 18 square meters and features a modest interior devoid of elaborate frescoes or stucco decorations. This design choice underscores its intended function as a private place of worship rather than a grand ecclesiastical space.

Ownership of the chapel has changed hands over time, reflecting broader historical shifts in the region. Initially part of Leopold Antonín Salm-Reifferscheidt's estate, it later came under JUDr. Josef Apollo Růžička’s ownership after World War I. Since 2011, Via Tempora Nova z. s. has taken on responsibility for its reconstruction, aiming to restore both the chapel and the castle.

Throughout its history, the Chapel of Saint Cross witnessed several key events that shaped its narrative. It served as a private prayer room for the noble family until it was last used in the 1960s when a retirement home occupied the castle. Following World War II, the chapel's furnishings were dismantled, and by the early 21st century, both the chapel and the castle had fallen into disrepair.

Today, the Chapel of Saint Cross remains inaccessible to the public due to its deteriorated state. However, it holds historical value as a testament to baroque architecture and the cultural heritage of Lipová Castle. The ongoing restoration efforts by Via Tempora Nova z. s. aim to preserve this monument for future generations. Visitors interested in history and architecture may find the chapel's story compelling, offering insight into the region's past and the enduring legacy of its noble families.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross was a castle chapel in Lipová. It is located on the first floor of the northeast wing of Lipová castle. In the second decade of the twenty-first century, like the entire castle, it is considerably damaged and awaits reconstruction. Together with the castle, it is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

Construction of the new Baroque castle began in seventeen thirty-seven. The impetus came from Leopold Antonín Salm-Reifferscheidt, the owner of the Lipová estate, who lived from sixteen ninety-nine to seventeen sixty-nine. However, the building and completion work continued for another two decades. The castle was built according to plans by Girolamo Costa by local count's builder Zacharias Hoffmann. Later, the building was not significantly altered, and this likely applies to the chapel as well.

In the preserved inventory of rooms, the chapel is listed as a prayer room. It was probably a modest private chapel of the count's family. After the First World War, the castle changed hands. From nineteen twenty-four it belonged to Prague lawyer Josef Apollo Růžička, but no mentions of the chapel from that time have been preserved. It likely served its purpose for the last time in the nineteen sixties, when the castle housed a retirement home.

From the nineteen seventies the castle remained empty, without interior furnishings, and gradually deteriorated. At the beginning of the twenty-first century the roof trusses collapsed and the building's destruction was nearly complete. The chapel thus practically disappeared and is not accessible to the public. Since twenty eleven the castle has been owned by the association Via Tempora Nova, which is striving for its complete reconstruction.

The chapel was the only vaulted room in what was otherwise a flat-ceilinged floor. It had an area of eighteen square meters and was furnished modestly, without any special painting or stucco decoration. Its furnishings have not been preserved because the inventory was dismantled after the Second World War. It included a scaled-down copy of the main altar from the nearby Church of Saints Simon and Jude, connected with the name of Dresden court sculptor Franz Pettrich and his son-in-law.

This season often provides softer lighting conditions due to longer daylight hours, which can enhance the beauty of both the natural surroundings and the chapel itself. Visitors should be mindful of occasional spring showers; therefore, packing a light raincoat or waterproof jacket is advisable. While crowds are generally manageable, arriving early in the morning can ensure a peaceful visit before more tourists arrive.

Summer: Summer at the Chapel of Saint Cross is characterized by lush greenery and warm sunshine, making it an ideal time for outdoor exploration. The longer daylight hours offer ample opportunity to appreciate both the chapel's architecture and its natural setting. However, this season also attracts larger crowds, especially during peak tourist times in July and August. To avoid the busiest periods, plan your visit on weekdays or early in the morning. Dress comfortably in light clothing suitable for warm weather, and don't forget sunscreen and a hat to protect against the sun's rays.

Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal times to visit when lighting is soft and shadows add depth to the landscape. Layered clothing is recommended as temperatures can vary significantly throughout the day.

Winter: Winter at the Chapel of Saint Cross presents a stark yet beautiful contrast, with snow-covered landscapes creating a magical setting for those who venture out during this quieter season. The shorter days mean that visitors should plan their trip in advance to make the most of the limited daylight hours. Warm clothing is essential, including thermal layers, gloves, and a hat, to ensure comfort during your visit in the cold weather.
