Kařízek Motte
Kařízek is a historic fortress located in the same-name village in Rokycany district. Founded in the fifteenth century, it was part of the Kingdom. His remains, preserved up to the twentieth century, were subsequently destroyed during the reconstruction of the property and the construction of the house. The remains of the fortress have been protected as a cultural monument since 1964.
The fortress in Karízek belonged to the historical period of the Jagellonian government, when the Czech Kingdom was undergoing political changes and cultural development. This era contributed to the formation of a medieval society in which the fortress served as key centres of power and administration for the Vladic families.
The architecture of Karízek was typical of medieval fortifications. The fortress included a central hill with a diameter of about 23 metres, surrounded by a wide moat. Two significantly modified ponds served as part of the fortification and additional defense. Although the walls of the former fortress were visible until the first half of the twentieth century, later landscaping led to the destruction of these structures.
The ownership and administration of Karízek has changed several times over the years. The first known member of the family was Zipota of Kareza, mentioned in 1263. Other owners were Ota of Karíza, who held the position of Prior Svěce Monastery in 1326 and 1340, and Seagull of Karízka mentioned in 1420. In the fifteenth century, there were two courts in Karizka: Zipotovský and Habartovský. After 1491 he transferred the property to the hands of the masters of Komarov, who joined the fort to their estate. In 1548, the fort was sold by Jan the younger Pesík of Komářov to John the elder of Lobkovice and Zbiroz.
The key events in the history of Karízka are references to the various members of the family who associated with the fortress. For example, Ota from Karíza is known for its function as Prior and donation of villages to the Prague monastery of St. George. In 1548 there was a significant change in the property situation when Jan Jr. Peshík sold the fort to John the elder of Lobkovic.
Today there is a family house built at the site of the former fortress in the original fortifications. Although the remains are tiny, their protected status as cultural monuments from 1964 is an important testament to the history of the region. The visit to Karízka offers the opportunity to explore a place that once served as a key centre of power and administration in the region.
Kařízek is a reminder of the rich history of the Czech Kingdom. Visit this place to learn about the past and appreciate the importance of protecting cultural monuments for future generations.

Welcome to the historic site Kařízek, a mysterious fortress that once stood in the heart of the same-name village in Rokycany County. Before you spread out a place where the days of the past sound in the memory of a fortress that had already been a part of the Kingdom of England in the fifteenth century. Although the fort itself does not exist, its remains are still here telling the story of rich history.
Kařízek was established as the home of the family Karíza or Karízka. The first mention of this family is found in 1263, when Zipota from Karíza appears. Since then, the fortress has been part of many historical events and transitions of property. In 1326, for example, Ota of Kareza held the position of Prior Svěce Monastery, which shows the important position of the family in society.
Look up and notice where the central hill once stood about 23 meters in diameter. Although there is not much left of the fort, we imagine architecture with a wide moat and two significantly modified ponds that served as part of the fortifications. These elements were key to the defence function of the fort.
The key figures associated with Kařík were Seagull of Karízka, mentioned in 1420. In the following decades, the property moved into the hands of the masters of Komářov and later the fort was sold to Jan younger Pěšík Jan older from Lobkovice in 1548. This family had an impact on other fates of the fortress before its physical traces disappeared during the twentieth century.
Interestingly, despite the demise of physical structures, the remains of Karízka have been protected as a cultural monument since 1964. This allows us to preserve and share the history of this place with future generations.
Let's move over and see where the environment is today. Even though the fort has disappeared, the atmosphere and history of the room are still present. Every stone and every place tells us a story about times that are no longer there.
The invitation is to explore other historical places in the area to learn more about the rich past of the area. I hope your visit to Kařízek was interesting and inspiring to you. Thank you for your concern and have a nice day!
Tips for visitors
For the best experience we recommend a visit during spring or autumn, when the surrounding landscape is the most distinctive. The ideal time for observation of ruins is during the golden watch, i.e. shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when light beautifully highlights the texture of old stones.
Since it is a ruin in open terrain, we recommend that you take with you enough drinking water and footwear with fixed soles, which is adapted to uneven terrain.
When shooting, focus on angles that capture the remnants of the walls themselves against the landscape background. The best light to capture the atmosphere of the extinct bastion is at a low angle of the sun that creates interesting shadows.
For families with children, this place represents an interesting opportunity to discover history in the field. However, it is necessary to explain to children that they are moving in the ruins of an old building and therefore to take greater care.

Seasonal recommendations
Spring - After winter sleep, Kařízek wakes up under fine light, which penetrates through flowering shrubs and fresh green leaves. The air is colder, but the sun's rays already create pleasant contrasts between shadows and dawn on stone remains. It is recommended to come early in the morning when there are still few visitors and light falls at an angle that highlights the texture of the ruins. Dress in layered clothes - light jacket, sweater and comfortable shoes with a good grip because the soil can still be moist and slippery.
Summer - In the summer months Kařízek irradiates the sun, which reveals every crack and ancient stone order, while the surrounding meadows are littered with wild flowers and buzzing insects. The atmosphere is alive, but it may be hot in the morning and the shadows are getting shorter. It is best to plan a visit for an early afternoon or a late afternoon when the crowd tips calm down and the light gets a golden touch. Take your hat, sunscreen and plenty of water; light, breathable clothes and solid shoes are necessary because stones can be hot.
Autumn - Autumn Kařízek is wrapped in golden and red shades of leaves that complement soft, scattered light along the horizon. Colder temperatures and mild humidity create a calm, almost mystical atmosphere, ideal for photography. It is recommended to come after the afternoon rains when the air is fresh and fewer people. Dress in warmer layers - sweater, long pants and waterproof shoes, because autumn rains can leave slippery stones and wet trails.
Winter - In winter Kařízek gets a dramatic look under the white snow coat; Sun rays reflect from ice crystals and create a cool, almost quiet space. Come during the morning when the day is still bright enough, but the temperatures are stable. Don't forget to wear a warm winter jacket, hat, gloves and tight shoes with anti-slip soles; if snow is expected, you can also consider chopsticks for stability on snowy terrain sections.
