Khynova vila in Mělník is an example of functionalist architecture built in 1927 according to the design of Adolf Liebscher younger. Located on Macharov Street No. 249 and since 1958 it has been protected as a cultural monument.

The creation of this building was linked to the period when functionalism prevailed in European architecture, which highlighted practicality and rejected unnecessary decoration. In Czechoslovakia, this style became a symbol of the modernization of the first republic. The plot was purchased in 1925 by the husband and daughter of Špink, married to Josef Khyn, who became an investor of the construction.

Adolf Liebscher younger, architect of the design, already had several realization in Mělník. Its design was probably inspired by Prague's Müller villa. The villa is a storey building in the middle of the garden with smooth bright facades, broken windows and balconies. The flat roof has a terrace and the charming element of the exterior is a semi-cylindrical risalite on the northeast side. The original brick pillar fence was replaced by a stone replica in 2008.

The ownership was changed several times: from the spouses of Špinku (1925) to Josef Khyn (1927) to Maria Khynová (1930). After 1939, the house was expropriated as Jewish property and served German officials. After the war there was reconstruction on the nursery (1948), which worked here until the 1980s. After 1989, the reconstruction started with a new owner.

Key events include investment in construction in the style of functionalism (1927), expropriation of property and accommodation of German officials (1939) and reconstruction of the nursery (1948). In 1958 the villa was declared a cultural monument, and in 1993 new reconstruction works began.

Today the villa is a private property and has been undergoing a renewal since 1993. This monument shows the development of first-time modern architecture and bears witness to the historical destinies of the 20th century, which makes it a valuable example of functionalist construction in Mělník.

Welcome to Mělník. You are standing in front of a remarkable building, which is the famous Khynova vila. Take your earphones off in half for a moment and listen to my story while you look at this unique building. Feel the moment when you find yourself in a place where modern construction mingles with the deep human destinies of the last century. Look in front of you at a storey building that breathes its purity and simplicity upon you. Its appearance will impress you at first sight with its differences from traditional historical houses in the surroundings, because it represents one of the first ever realization of modern building style in this city.

Let's move forward in time and see how this building came to be. The year is nineteen hundred twenty-seven and a new story begins to be written on this property. A parcel for a future home was once purchased by the husband and his daughter, Dirt. Marie later married Josef Khyn and it was this man who became the main investor of the building. Together, they longed for modern housing, which would correspond to the latest trends at the time and imagine a comfortable life. They entrusted their visions to a skilled builder, who was the architect Adolf Liebscher younger. He created a design of a house that was indelibly written into the building history of the entire city.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and the details that are right in front of your eyes. When you look at the structure, notice its overall shape. It is a storey building that is typical of its flat roof and spacious terrace. The entire facade is characterized by its smooth and light plaster, which makes a very clean impression. If you turn your view towards the northeast side, you'll see another interesting element, which is a semi-cylindrical pitch or risalite. This rounded shape pleasantly interferes with the thickness of the straight lines and gives the whole construction a distinctive character. Each of these elements bears a manuscript of the modern architectural direction of the time, which was marked by emphasis on efficiency, clean shapes and the absence of unnecessary ornaments.

But the building you are now facing does not only have an interesting face, but also a very rich and sometimes very tragic history. Her fates faithfully copy our country's twisted history in the twentieth century. Idyllic family living didn't last forever. With the arrival of the troubled war years came a great blow. In nineteen hundred thirty-nine, the property was forcibly taken and expropriated to the husbands. At that time, strangers settled in these areas. The villa was used to accommodate German officials and even members of the feared secret police known to all under the name Gestapo. Instead of joy and family happiness, the house thus witnessed dark spirits and fear.

When the war finally came to its end and peace came, the building found a whole new application. In nineteen hundred forty-eighteen she went through an internal transformation and reconstruction, after which she began to serve the smallest. The former family estate and war sanctuary became a nursery. The house was brought back to life by laughter and noise, which certainly helped heal wounds from years ago.

An interesting fact, which shows the uniqueness of this place, is that the importance of the construction was officially recognised by the authorities. Already in nineteen hundred fifty-eight, the building was listed as a protected cultural heritage. This confirmed its architectural value for future generations. After long years of operation and further development came the year nineteen hundred ninety-three when the new period began. The new owner has launched extensive repairs to improve the construction and to restore the glory and dignity he deserves after so many changes.

When you look at this villa today, remember how much she's been through. From the enthusiastic construction of a young married couple to a dark period of war and a period of nursery for children to today's form. He's a witness to history who stands in his place and tells his story to anyone who stops and listens.

I hope you enjoyed stopping by this monument today and that you have looked at all the details that have been discussed. You can now go around the area in peace, perceive the atmosphere of the place and continue your walk through the city to discover other interesting places and stories. Thank you for your attention and I wish you the rest of the day. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit Khyn's villa is autumn or spring, when vegetation in the surroundings is particularly charming and light brings ideal conditions for photography. There are also fewer visitors at these times, which allows a more peaceful tour.

Access to the villas is possible both by car and public transport.

When you visit, bring suitable clothes according to the weather and perhaps even the camera if you are interested in capturing architectural details of the villa. It is also important to carry a map or GPS device for easy orientation.

Photography of Khyn's villa offers several interesting perspectives, especially from the terrace and in the sunlight. The best time for pictures is usually early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer.

In the vicinity of the villa there are several interesting places to visit during the trip. Mělník offers historical monuments and natural beauty, such as a castle or Maleski pond. For families with children it may be interesting to explore the surrounding forests and playground.
