Komošín Ruin

Komošín is the ruins of a castle located east of the village of Dolany in the Klatovska region. The castle stood on the summit of a promontory above the Úhlavou River, at an altitude of 440 meters. Today, only ground traces and wall remains are left of it, which have been partially swallowed by later construction. These remains are protected as a cultural monument.

The castle first appears in written sources in 1510. At that time, Jan Kanický from Čachrova was selling it along with other property, already as an abandoned site. It is assumed that Komošín was an older seat of the lords from Svrčovce. The oldest known owner would be Oldřich from Svrčovce, whom we know about from the first half of the fourteenth century. His descendants abandoned the castle during the fifteenth century and relocated to a fortified manor in Svrčovce.

The ruins, however, did not remain without use. In 1703, the Klatovska Jesuits had a Baroque chapel built in it. It survived until 1956, when it collapsed.

We do not know what the castle's outer ward looked like. It was separated from the castle's core by a neck ditch cut into the rock. This ditch most likely surrounded the core on other sides as well. The core was entered through a gate in the southeastern corner, which no longer exists. The gate led to a palisade, whose rampart has partially survived.

On the northern side of the core stood a rectangular palace. Three of its outer walls have survived inside modern construction. A cellar with a barrel vault has also been preserved. A round tower probably stood at the front of the castle.
