Kongresové centrum Praha is an extensive neofunctionalist object in Prague 4-Nusla. It serves as the largest congress centre in the Czech Republic. The building was built between 1976 and 1981. It is remarkable with its capacity, top acoustic and a large number of integrated works of art.

The project was created in the framework of the 1971 Prague Territorial Plan. He anticipated the construction of a service centre on the southern edge of Pankrácké plana. The location was determined by an excellent transport connection near the North South Magistrate and the metro station Vysehrad. The preparation took place in the Military Project Department under the direction of Vladimir Conk. The selection procedure was complicated and the original price frame of 1.2 billion Kcs was eventually double over. The implemented design of architects Jaroslav Mayer and Antonín Vanek saw the critic as a copy of the Hamburg Congress Centre.

Construction started in 1976 on the ground Nuselský SK. Carrier steel construction was supplied by Vítkovický ironworks Klementa Gottwald in Ostrava and Prefa Preštice panels. The building was completed in 1981 and ceremonially opened on 2 April with the participation of President Gustav Husák. At the time of its inception it was referred to as the Downstairs Palace because it was intended to be used for the holding of the party slopes of the KSČ. Due to its construction, a large social hall was removed in the New Scene of the National Theatre. Because these events were supposed to be moved to a new building.

From the point of view of architecture it is a neofunctionalist construction with typical belt windows and smoke-coloured glass. The floor area is 35,000 m2. The building has up to 70 halls with a total capacity of 9300 people. The biggest of them, Congress Hall, will hold 2,764 people. His acoustics are ranked 13th in global order. There is also a Small Hall for 440 people, a restaurant for 1700 people, a presidential lounge (Meeting Room I) and a Presidency lounge (Meeting Hall II), which is preserved in its original form. There is a solar power plant of 7000 m2 on the roof, which covers up to 10% of electricity consumption.

The interior is decorated with about two hundred works of art. This was required by the then obligation to invest a percentage of the price of the building in art. These include the glass sculpture of the Tree by Stanislav Libenski and Jaroslava Bhott, the Sun chandelier by Vladimir Procházka or the relief Peace Festival by Clara Pataki. There are also handwoven tapestries, tapestries, ceramic tiles mosaics and decorative stones. Special design furniture was also designed for the building.

The building was called Pakul (Palace of Culture) in the short term, and people called it Lišík, Moby Dick or Briquette. In 1981, a bronze statue of John Hana's Joy Day was revealed before her, which was removed after the Velvet Revolution. Significant events include Rockfest, 1987, or negotiations on the composition of the first post-election government in December 1989. The Forum Hotel was later attached to the building, then Corinthia Tower, and the Holiday Inn and Business Center of Vysehrad are attached to it. The owner is currently the capital of Prague, which bought about 55% of the share from the Czech Republic in 2025.

Today the object is a key factor for the international prestige of Prague. Thanks to it, the city became the eighth most popular conference destination in 2017 and in 2022 reached TOP 5 best meeting places according to the ICCA Association. Location on the edge of the Nusel Valley provides visitors with a panorama of Prague.

This object represents an important example of the architecture of its time and a unique cluster of works of art in one space. It is recommended to visit it especially in terms of technical capacity and remarkable acoustics.

Welcome to Prague 4, Nusle section. You're standing in front of one of the most significant buildings in this part of town. In front of you is a vast complex that you see as a monumental space designed to meet thousands of people. It is a place where the functions, space and ambition of the city are combined. If you look at the total size of the building, you're probably interested in its size and the way it dominates the landscape on the edge of the Nusel Valley. This position is crucial because it offers a unique view of the surrounding area and also separates two parts of urban tissue. Now let's go back a little bit in time and see how this place started. It all began in 1971 when the Prague Territorial Plan envisaged the creation of a large service centre right here on the southern edge of Pankrácké pláně. There was a need to create space that could accommodate a huge number of people and serve as a representative place for the state and the city. A year later, in 1972, there was a competition for a building project. The goal was to create a space that was modern, effective and at the same time large enough to host events of global importance. Originally created under the name Palace of Culture and has since been the largest centre for gatherings and conferences throughout the Czech Republic. Now pay attention to the architecture itself. The building is performed in neofunctionalist style. This means that her appearance is primarily determined by her function. Note the clean lines and the extent of the entire object. The architect behind this project was Vladimír Conk. When you look at the building, feel its massiveness, but it is not engorging but rather organized. The entire complex is designed to handle the movement of thousands of visitors at once. If you look at the layout of the space, you'll find that the building has a total of 7,000 rooms. This is an incredible amount of space that allows many different events to take place simultaneously, from small work meetings to a huge gathering. When we think about who worked here or who visited here, we have to talk about thousands of travelers from all over the world. Even if we do not find one particular historical personality that is connected to the building as its creator or permanent resident, this building is home to an international community of experts and cultural creators. The building became a symbol of Prague's openness to the world. It's where people from different continents meet to discuss science, politics, or art. This international dimension has become stronger in recent years. In 2017 Prague became the eighth most popular destination for conference travelers worldwide thanks to this centre. And in 2022, thanks to the capacity of this place, the city even reached the top five places in the world to meet according to the international convention organizers' association. Now I want to impress you with some interesting things that are not visible at first sight, but that make this place a real one. First, consider the scope of the capacities. The entire complex can accommodate up to 9,000 300 people. Imagine the amount of people in one space. But size isn't everything, quality is important. If you had the chance to enter the largest hall, you would find that his acoustics are top-notch. Experts place it in the thirtieth place in the worldwide order, which means the sound is almost perfect here. In addition to technical parameters, the building is also a home of art. The interior is decorated with about two hundred works of art. These include, for example, a glass sculpture called Tree, which brings to the functional space an element of nature and fragility. It's a fascinating contrast between massive concrete construction and glass finesse. And if you look up at the roof, which you don't have to see from this angle in full width, there's a solar power plant. It helps the building to be more sustainable and use energy from the sun, which is a modern addition to the original project. So you're standing in front of a construction that's much more than just a concrete complex. It's a communication machine, a culture center and a technological unique. It is a place that has helped Prague gain recognition on a global scale and has shown that our capital city can host the biggest events in the world. I now invite you to look around slowly, to see the atmosphere of this place and perhaps try to imagine what discussions and meetings took place in these halls over the decades. Explore the surroundings of the Nusel Valley and see how this building is inscribed in the panorama of Prague. Thank you for your attention and wish you a pleasant further walk around our beautiful city.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during bright days when the architecture of the building excels in natural light. Transport to the premises is possible by car and by public transport; We recommend to verify the specific connection in the search engine. When visiting, we recommend taking comfortable shoes with us because the space is very extensive.

For photo lovers are the most interesting views of the neofunctionalist shapes of the building from the outside. The best light for the images is in the late afternoon. In the vicinity of the monument you can visit the Nusel Bridge, Pankrácké Square or walk in the Nusel Valley.

Families with children appreciate a walk in the surrounding Nusel Valley, which offers room for movement outside the city centre. The building itself serves as a work space, so it is advisable to take care of the peace with children in the vicinity of the operated parts.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding area of the building wakes up in green and the sun gently lights up concrete surfaces. It is advisable to choose light but layered clothes and travel to the building in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months, the area is dominated by intense heat and sharp light, which highlights architecture. It is recommended to visit in the early morning or late evening hours when the temperature is more pleasant, and not forget the headgear.

Autumn brings colorful leaves and a foggy atmosphere to the surrounding parks, giving the place a mysterious touch. Ideal is shoes suitable for wet terrain and warm sweater, with bright, low sun days.

Zimą works colder and its shapes stand out in contrast to grey sky or snow. It is necessary to wear warm winter clothes and solid shoes, while a short walk around the building is the best at the Advent time when the surroundings are lit up.
