Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie (Sušice III) Church

On the outskirts of Sušice, locally known as Nuželice, stands the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is usually called the Cemetery Church of the Virgin Mary and today serves mainly for conducting Catholic funerals. An earlier church stood on this spot, mentioned in the year 1233. The current building is part of a Gothic church from the first half of the 14th century. It was perhaps intended to be much larger, but it was never completed.

In the middle of the 15th century, the Kabátovská Chapel was added on the southern side, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. It stands out with a remarkable star vault. It takes its name from an endowment founded in the 17th century by Adam Kabát, vicar at Saint Vitus in Prague, who died in 1685. From the year 1736 onwards, it served as a burial vault for the Kabát family, later for the Hutary family. In 1948, the local national committee in Sušice designated the chapel for burials of non-Catholics. An examination with a micro-camera in 2015 revealed a large quantity of bones there. They come either from an older ossuary or from disturbed graves.

In 1592, a fire damaged the church. During its reconstruction, the church received its present appearance. The tower and the church vault were created at that time.

On the northern side, the Gerlovská Chapel was added in 1691, dedicated to Saint Sebastian and Saint Florian. It was built by the burgher Sebastian Gerl. It was a burial chapel for him, his wife Rozína, and their three daughters, Apolena, Anna, and Catherine.

In 1910, a renovation by Mirwald added pseudo-Romanesque elements to the tower and western façade. In 1955 and 1956, these were removed again. The interior and exterior underwent renovation in 2000, and further partial repairs followed in 2007 and 2008.

On the tower are four-sided clock faces with sheet metal dials. Originally they had mechanical drive. They were made by Karel Adamec during one of the church's reconstructions and cost 600 crowns. The clock had a cast iron chime and another smaller one, which was later removed. In January 2010, they received an electric mechanism and an electric chime.

The church had a complicated history with its bells. After the First World War, none remained in the tower. New bells cast in 1929 were requisitioned again. Only in 1958 was a nameless bell brought here from the Church of Saint Linhart in Dolní Vltavici. That church and the entire village disappeared under water during the construction of the Lipno Dam.
