The Röm Catholic Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Berunice belongs to monuments with long history. The place where the church stands today was the centre of parish activity in the Middle Ages. It is assumed that the original temple was established probably before 1354. The parish existed and prospered before the Hussite wars, which ranks it among the region's older settlement communities.

The new church we see today was постaveven between 1716 and 1719. It was created in the place of an older, decrepit church which was torn down in 1716. Like many other buildings in Bohemia, this new temple was created in the early 18th century, during a period when the country gradually recovered from wars and catalogues of the last century. The construction was completed shortly after 1716.

The church tower that visitors see today was not part of the original building. It was only built in 1770, more than fifty years after the completion of the church. This additional construction seemed to meet the needs of the parish and the technical possibilities of the time.

During its operation the church in Berunice has undergone a number of repairs and maintenance. In 1797, the roof was replaced with a premium. In 1912 and 1913, repairs were made to a wider extent. In 1983, the roof was replaced again, this time for tin. The last significant repair of the tower took place in 1998. These interventions show how the construction was maintained in operational condition despite time and weather effects.

The life of the parish has seen some fundamental changes in its history. In 1620, during the post-white mountain period, the original parish was abolished and the church turned into a filial chapel in the royal parish. In 1787 a locale was established in Berunice. From 1 January 2009, the church stopped being a separate parish центre and became a filial temple in the parish of the town of Králové, where it still serves the faithful today.

The church is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The visitor will find here the testimony of centuries of Czech faith and continuity of the settlement community, which has been holding this place since only the oldest written entries remember.

The Roman Catholic Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Běrunice was built between 1716 and 1719. It was erected on the site of an older church that had most likely stood there since before 1354. However, that church had fallen into disrepair, so in 1716 it was demolished and construction of a new one began immediately. The tower was added only several decades later, in 1770.

The church underwent a series of repairs. In 1797 it received a new roof with tile roofing. Further repairs took place in 1912 and 1913. In 1983 the roof was replaced with a metal one, and in 1998 the tower was repaired.

The history of the local parish is also interesting. It existed before the Hussite Wars, but in 1620 it was abolished. The church then became a subsidiary, meaning it was subordinate to the parish in Městec Králové. Independent spiritual administration returned to Běrunice in 1787, when a locality was established there.

Václav Dvorský became the first spiritual administrator and remained there until 1824, a total of 37 years. Leopold Richter also served here for a long time, from 1862 to 1891. After him came Josef Synáček, who had previously served as a chaplain here for several years. However, he was soon succeeded by Václav Vintera, who administered the parish until 1912.

In the second half of the twentieth century, Běrunice no longer had its own resident priest. Clergy commuted here, first from Lovčice and from 1998 from Městec Králové. On January 1st, 2009, the parish was completely abolished and the church once again became a subsidiary in the Městec Králové parish. The circle that had begun in 1620 thus closed.

The church is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

For kids

Imagine going back 308 years to a time when there were far fewer people in the world and the country was full of forests and fields. It was like "Land in the Nature," but it was real.

At that time, there was a little church in this place that was built before our village was here. But one big fire destroyed it. And so the people who lived here had to start over and build a new church. It stood until 1718.

Seasonal recommendations

The spring months in Berunice bring awakening of the surrounding Polish nature and fresh atmosphere. The Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary is in this period surrounded by a greenening landscape and morning fog over nearby water surfaces creates very photogenic scenery, especially at sunrise. Lighting is soft and ideal for detailed views of the historical facade. Due to the variable weather, it is recommended to take fixed footwear into any spring mud and laminated clothing, as the interior areas of the building are colder. Tourist attendance is mild in these weeks, which allows a peaceful tour without waiting.

During the main holiday months, the monument offers refuge from hot sunlight. The strong summer light sharply depicts architectural details and the surrounding trees provide a welcome shade in adjacent exterior. It is recommended to plan a visit for morning hours, when temperatures are still pleasant and the sun perfectly illuminates the main entrance. From the point of view of practical advice, it is advisable to carry enough fluids and headgear for the trip to the monument as the municipal area is exposed to direct sunlight. Choose a light dress, but take into account the sacred nature of the place appropriate.

Autumn season transforms the surroundings of the Berunic shrine into a palette of warm earthy colors. The falling leaves and the sun low above the horizon provide a deep, melancholy atmosphere that will be appreciated especially by lovers of chamber moods and calm contemplation. The late afternoon light creates long shadows and magical glare on the windows. Because autumn days are windy and crispy, the necessary equipment is a wind-resistant jacket and a warmer sweater. Visiting is minimal during this period, so you can enjoy the undisturbed atmosphere of the entire complex.

The winter season breathes into the Gothic-Renaissance architecture a quiet and noble atmosphere. Often the snow cover on the roof creates a fairy-tale contrast with a dark wall. The lighting is short, but the low sun can conjure up dramatic shadows in the snow in bright days. At advent time, the interior is particularly secure. For a smooth visit it is necessary to choose really warm winter clothes, hat, gloves and non-slip shoes due to freezing roads.
