Kostel Panny Marie Sněžné (Olomouc) Church

The Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Olomouc is a distinguished example of Baroque architecture, renowned for its elaborate sculptural decoration and integration of art within its interior. Situated at Náměstí Republiky near the former Minorite monastery, this Roman Catholic church was consecrated in 1716 to Our Lady of the Snows. Its significance lies not only in its architectural grandeur but also in its historical role as a response to a major plague epidemic that struck Olomouc in 1715.

The origins of the Church trace back to the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War, when Jesuits were invited by Bishop Vilém Prusinovský to establish their presence in Olomouc. Initially acquiring a Gothic church and monastery from the Minorites, the Jesuits began constructing a new complex of Baroque buildings, including this church for pastoral care of students. The foundation stone was laid in 1712, with construction plans finalized by 1692. Michael Klein z Nisy conceived the project, while Lukáš Glöckel initially supervised its execution until his death, after which Wolfgang Reich took over.

Architecturally, the church is a quintessential example of Baroque design, characterized by its five-aisled facade with two towers that enhance Olomouc's skyline. The entrance portal features tordovated columns crafted by Václav Render, while the interior boasts intricate frescoes and paintings by artists such as Jan Kryštof Handke and Josef František Wickart. A notable feature is the 'heavenly orchestra' organ created by J. G. Halbich in 1729, contributing to the church's excellent acoustics.

Ownership of the church has shifted over time, reflecting broader historical changes. Initially under Jesuit control until their suppression by Emperor Joseph II in 1773, it then served the University of Olomouc for a brief period before becoming part of military possession post-1778. In 1952, the city of Olomouc acquired the church, which has since been used primarily for Sunday services and concerts due to its acoustics.

Key events in the church's history include its restoration beginning in 1910 after serving various secular purposes, including as a storage facility. The 20th century saw significant restorations, particularly of its organ prospectus and interior elements under the guidance of Dušan Jurkovič and other Moravian artists. In recent years, it has been designated an univerzitní kostel within the Akademická farnost Olomouc.
