Kostel Stětí svatého Jana Křtitele, Vyšehrad Church

St. John the Baptist Church in Prague Vyšehrad is a historically important church preserved as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Construction before 1380, it survived the Hussite War and was modified in the middle of the 17th century by baroque fortification. The interior has three ships divided by four pillars, which support the cross vaults, with a shallow belt and scissors for altars. Although not accessible to the public, its historical importance is highlighted by archaeological findings from 1974- 1975.

The first record of the Church of St. John Křetel is dated 1380 and it is referred to as an important medieval structure in the history of Prague. He endured the destruction of the fortress of Vysehrad during Hussite wars in November 1420, when much of the surrounding area was destroyed. Despite these challenges, the church was restored in the 15th century and continued to serve its community until further transformation as a result of the Baroque fortification which began in 1654.

The Church of St John the Baptist was originally built as a two-boat parish church on a rocky edge near the town hall and butchers' stalls. The construction of Baroque fortifications starting in 1654 led to significant modifications; It was partially buried by the curtain, which led to a shortening of dimensions and lower arched ceiling. By 1764, an extension of the sacristy was added on the north side and it provided access to the newly built chapel of the Chapel of Our Lady of Shancovska.

During the course of its history, the Church of Puppies saw Jan Křetel's various stages of use and preservation. The inner spaces of the church were discovered during archaeological excavations between 1974 and 1975 and revealed knowledge of its past and significance. In the mid-1990s, these premises served as exhibition halls and lapidarium, highlighting their cultural value before the 2013 renewal.

Today, the Church of St. John the Baptist Church remains a protected monument inside the fortress of Vysehrad, near the chapel of the Chapel of the Virgin Mary Šancovska. Although not accessible to the public, its historical and architectural importance makes it an interesting place for interested people in Prague's rich past. Visitors can appreciate its historical history from nearby prospects, getting a glimpse into the period when Czechs were the main cultural and political centre in Europe.
