The street U Dobřenských is a short transit road in Prague which connects Bethlehem and Náprstková. It was created at the end of the 19th century and stands out with the history of medicine, historical architecture and the proximity of major cultural institutions.

The site was created in connection with the construction of the Náprstkov Museum of Asian, African and American cultures in the 1890s. The street was officially named in 1901. The name refers to the important family of Dobřenský, namely Jakub Jan Václav Dobřenský from Černý Most (1623-1697), Czech doctor, professor and rector of Charles University.

Architectural space with characteristic historical facades. The buildings along the street come mainly from the end of the 19th century and use typical materials of the same time, such as brick, stone tiles or wooden details. The original layout of the street was preserved although some interiors were modernised during the 20th century.

There are several important objects in the street. On the corner with Náprstková is the house No. 5, which in the past was owned by Jakub Jan Václav Dobřenský. At present there is a graphic studio Hot Ice. Other buildings include the house U Dobřenských (No. 267 / 1), the house U Sláms and the Prástkov Museum itself.

An interesting feature is the U Dobřenských Brewery (No. 3), which represents a unique concept specializing in beer flavored with medicinal plants. It follows a medical tradition associated with the street name. Thanks to the position between Bethlehem and Finger, this short link is a very lively place.

The street is now fully accessible and forms part of the historical centre of Old Town. In its immediate vicinity is the Church of St. Nicholas, while in the wider area we will find sights such as Charles Bridge and Prague Castle.

The combination of historical architecture and references to significant figures of Czech science makes the street an interesting destination for visitors. It is a place where the history of university tradition meets modern Prague gastronomy.

Welcome to the heart of old Prague. You've just entered one of the quieter, yet very important alleys that form the fabric of this historic center. You're standing on U Dobřenských Street. It's a short, passageway that unambiguously connects two famous Prague arteries, the Bethlehem and the Finger. When you look around you now, feel the atmosphere of this place, which acts as a peaceful port between the busier surrounding areas. It's a space where history meets the daily life of the city.

Now let's stop at how this alley actually came into being. Although you are in an area that is many centuries old, this particular journey is a relatively young addition to the old city's plan. It was created only in the late nineteenth century. Its creation was closely linked to the construction of the Náprstkov Museum. It was in connection with the construction of this important cultural stand that it was necessary to modify the surrounding communication in order to make the space more accessible and functional. The official name you're reading on the boards today, the name U Dobřenských, was the street got in a thousand nine hundred and one.

Now pay attention to the buildings that surround you. Although we do not know the specific names of architects who designed these houses, you can note the overall appearance of the facade. Look at the facades and see how the aisle narrows and widens. Over the last century, the interior of these buildings has undergone gradual modernization, which means that even if it is historically active from the outside, within it we will find modern equipment and modifications. It is a typical example of how the old Praha adapted to new times without losing its character.

Who were the Doberens after which this alley carries its name? Let's go back in time far beyond the nineteenth century. Name refers to an important medical family. The key figure is Jakub Jan Václav Dobřenský, who lived in the seventeenth century, namely from the year one thousand six hundred twenty-three to one thousand six hundred ninety-seven. Imagine a man who was a true authority at the time. He was a respected Czech doctor, professor and even Rector of Charles University. His influence on the then science and education was extremely great, and that is why his name is still in Prague.

If you look at house number five now, stop by his place for a while. It was this house in the past owned by Jakub Jan Václav Dobřenský. It's fascinating to think that one of the most important doctors of his time could once have lived in these walls. It's a tangible link between the present and the distant past of the 17th century.

And now I'm going to lead you to something that might interest you from a different angle. Besides science and medicine, the craft we love in Prague is connected to this street. The U Dobřenských Brewery is housed in house number three. It's a place known for its beer that combines tradition with modern approach. It is an interesting contrast that the alley named after the rector of the university and the respected physician now hosts a place where people can enjoy relaxing with great beer. It's a small piece of Prague's life where intellectual history meets a craft tradition.

Think for a moment about how this place has changed. From the time Professor Dobřenský lived here, to the construction of the museum at the end of the nineteenth century, to today's modern brewery operation. Each of these layers adds a new meaning to the street. It's a small, inconspicuous alley, but it has stories about education, city development and the joy of good beer.

Now that you know the story of this short journey, I suggest you move on slowly. You can continue towards Bethlehem Street or stop at the Náprstka Museum, which was the reason why this alley was even created. Feel the quiet rhythm of this place and be accompanied by the secrets of old Prague.

Thank you for spending some time with us U Dobřenských. We wish you a pleasant further journey and many new discoveries in our beautiful city. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon, when there is a quiet and fewer people in the narrow alley, allowing better observation of architecture. Transportation to the centre of Prague is possible by car and public connections; Check the specific routes and connections in the maps. Take a walk with comfortable shoes suitable for historical center with cat heads. Since it's a short street pass, all you need is basic things and a good mood. For the best photos we recommend monitoring the impact of natural light between houses. The most interesting pictures come when looking at the street axis, which connects Bethlehem and Náprstkova Street. You can visit the Náprstka Museum, Bethlehem Street or St. Nicholas Church within half an hour. For families with children we recommend a follow-up walk to nearby park Stromovka, where children can relax in green.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring the surroundings of the monument awaken to life and the fresh greenery complement the details of the facade. Light is soft in this period, which is ideal for observing architecture from the street. We recommend light spring clothes and a visit in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months it dominates intense sun and hot air, which creates contrast with the cold stone walls. Due to high temperatures and the largest number of visitors on the streets, it is best to leave early in the morning or at dusk. Don't forget the hat and plenty of water.

Autumn brings golden colours of leaves and a specific nostalgic atmosphere. The lighting is more saturated and the shadows are longer, which highlights the plastic elements of the building. Suitable is layered clothing and a visit in the afternoon when the sun gently hits the surface of the object.

Zimą is a monument in a quiet and rough environment that can be faked by snow. The atmosphere is calmer and in advent time in the surroundings the expectations of the holidays prevail. It is necessary to have warm winter clothes and fixed shoes, the best time for an outside tour is during short daylight.
