The Church of St. Brice is located in the heart of the South Bohemian village of Dobev and represents one of many Gothic temples that decorate the Czech landscape. It's a smaller, single-boat structure with a five-sided presbytery that can be easily overlooked because its dimensions are modest. Yet it is known for its exceptional stonework, which makes it one of the architectural attractions of the region.

The first mention of Dobeva dates back to 1318, when the municipality owned Albera z Dobeve. His possessions included a fortress which served as a noble residence. The Church of St. Brice was built later, in the late 14th century, and it worked originally as an ownership chapel on a fortress. One of the three sons of Albera z Dobeve is supposed to be behind the construction. The fortress fell over time; Today, only the remnants of the wall and the attached manor barn were preserved.

The Medieval House of Dobevsky died out in the 16th century, and the village then bought Henry from Švamberk, who joined her to the Kestřans. Modern history of the church is rich in repairs: in 1881, the innovator Jan Adam of Schwarzenberg introduced it into the form we see today. Further maintenance work followed in 1965, 1977 and the period 2005- 2007.

The architecture of the church reflects Gothic ideals. The main entrance opens on the south side of the building. The entrance portal is intricately profiled by two gradually receding glutes and closed with a broken arch. The tympanon preserved remnants of unfinished relief, which was supposed to depict Christ on the Cross with the Virgin Mary and Saint John. The consoles on both sides of the hole carry the головie angels. There are two windows above the portal at different heights - a two-piece Gothic window on the right with a semi-circular arch, a simpler window on the left with a broken arch, which was completed later.

The presbytery ends with three sides of the octagonal and has three two-piece windows with a broken arch and different flamboyant circles. The masonry is supported by the external shears. Part of the construction is also a small prism tower, which has two windows on each side. Inside the tower there are two bells - older from 1510 with Gothic minuscule and ornamental elements, and younger from 1693, decorated with the relief of the Virgin Mary with a child and Christ on the cross.

The interior of the church is dominated by a wooden tribune from 1756, which divides the main ship into two levels. Below it are rows of wooden benches. On the bleachers stands a neo-gothic organ from the workshop of the organist Johann Fischer from Susice in 1885. The most precise element, however, is the wooden ceiling of the main ship, which was decorated in 1756 with a varied decoration with folk paintings. The floral motifs and ornamental elements with mussels were preserved.

The church is situated in a cemetery enclosed by a wall, in which there is a tiled chapel with a statue of St. John Nepomuk from 1851. Although the building is small and easily overlooked in the centre of the village, the attention of those interested in Gothic architecture and medieval art deserves attention.

The Church of Saint Brictius in Stará Dobev is a Gothic structure from the late 14th century. The village first appears in written records in the year 1318. At that time it was owned by Albera of Dobev, who also owned the local fortified manor, which served as a noble residence. Today, only part of the fortification wall and an attached noble barn remain from the manor. The small church originally arose as a private chapel belonging to the manor and was probably built by one of Albera's three sons.

The Dobev family line died out in the 16th century. The village was then purchased by Henry of Švamberka and annexed to Kestřany. The church received its present appearance thanks to John Adam of Schwarzenberg, who had it renovated in 1881. Further repairs followed in 1965 and 1977, and then between 2005 and 2007.

It is a small single-nave building with a pentagonal presbytery, that is, a choir. The entire structure is decorated with finely carved stonework. The main entrance is on the south side. The portal, which ends in a pointed arch, bears in the field above the door the remains of an unfinished relief. This most likely depicts Christ on the cross with the Virgin Mary and Saint John. In the corners of the entrance are two angel heads on consoles. The choir is lit by three two-part windows with pointed arches and various flamboyant tracery. From outside it is supported by buttresses with roof caps.

The church has a small pyramid-shaped bell tower. Two bells hang in it. The older one dates from 1510 and bears an inscription in Gothic script, so-called minuscule. The younger one is from 1693 and is decorated with a relief of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and Christ on the cross.

The main nave has no vault but a wooden ceiling. In 1756 it was decorated with colorful folk paintings featuring flowers and shells. Probably also from that year is the wooden gallery, which divides the nave into two different levels. Neo-Gothic organ built in 1885 by organ builder Johann Fischper from Sušice stands on the gallery. The nave is separated from the choir by a robust pointed triumphal arch.

The church stands in the center of the village by the main road. It is surrounded by a cemetery with a wall, in which there is a small recessed chapel with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1851.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the Church of St. Brice is early spring or autumn when there are fewer tourists and light penetrates through gothic windows, creating wonderful atmospheric effects.

Take with you comfortable shoes, water and possibly umbrella, because part of the area is open and can be variable weather; Also prepare a map or phone with offline map to easily navigate the area.

Photography of the interior space is best in the morning, when the sunlight penetrates through the stained glass; interesting angles can be found at the main gate and from the side of the chapel with the statue of St. John Nepomuk, where there is contrast between stone structure and soft light.

In addition to the church itself, visit the cemetery and a small chapel with a statue of St. John Nepomuk, which are just a few minutes' walk away; for families with children is a short walk in the village area with the possibility of a picnic in the grassy area near the chapel, where children can run freely while exploring the historical environment.
