The church of St. Philip and James is located in the heart of Zlína as a parish church of the local Roman Catholic parish. He built between 1390 and 1420 and became one of the oldest churches in the city. Originally surrounded by an extensive cemetery, which belonged to the oldest cemeteries built in Zlín.

In the early nineteenth century, a major reconstruction had to be carried out. The reason was insufficient capacity - builders chose an unusual solution and changed the orientation of the church from east to south. This was necessary because of the impossibility of expanding the building east. The tower stayed in its original place.

The 19th век was a temptation for the temple. In 1819 the church was hit by devastating fires - the roof burned down and the tower was damaged. Thirty years later, in 1849, a second catastrophic fire came with identical consequences. The current form of the tower dates back to this period in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The interior of the church is decorated with a mosaic by artist Antonín Klouda, who replaced the original painting of the patrons of St. Philip and Jacob from the painter Josef Kessler from 1876 in the 1970s. But at the core of the church are the bells. The original bells were confiscated by the army during the First World War. The new, two steel bells called Philip and James and Our Lady were made in Vítkovice in 1920 thanks to collections of believers and generosity by Thomas Bati.

At the end of the twentieth century, these bells began to corrode. The believers started a new collection and two new bells were consecrated in May 2008 - one dedicated to Saint Cyril and Methodius (900 kilograms) and the other to Saint Zdislava (345 kilograms). In September 2008 they were ceremonially suspended. The elder bell of St. Philip and James remained in the tower, the bell of the Virgin Mary reminds believers of the divisions of the tower.

The space around the church was changing. The historical cemetery was moved to the field above the Kudlovský stream in 1842. After opening the Forest Cemetery was closed in 1932 and cancelled in 1949. Today there is a park in this place, reminiscent of the centuries when the soul of Zlín lay here.

The Church of Saint Philip and James stands in the center of Zlín and is the parish church of the local Roman Catholic parish. It is the original church of Zlín. It was built between 1390 and 1420 and has undergone several reconstructions since then.

The most fundamental change came at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The church no longer had sufficient capacity and it was not possible to expand it towards the east. The builders therefore changed its orientation from east to south. The tower, however, remained in its original place. The church was then struck by two devastating fires, in 1819 and in 1849. Each time the entire roof burned down and the tower was also damaged. Its present appearance dates from the time after the second fire, that is from the second half of the nineteenth century.

Inside the church there was once a painting of the patrons, Saints Philip and James, by the painter Josef Kessler from 1876. At the end of the seventies of the last century it was replaced by a mosaic by the artist Antonín Kloudá.

The fate of the bells is interesting. The original ones were confiscated during the First World War for war purposes. In 1920, two new steel bells, Philip and James and the Virgin Mary, were cast in Vítkovice. The money for them came from collections among the faithful and also from gifts from Tomáš Baťa, the owner of Count Haupt's estate and from fellow countrymen living overseas.

At the end of the twentieth century the Vítkovice bells began to corrode and their sound was no longer so pure. The faithful therefore organized a collection again and with its proceeds two new bells were made. The larger one weighs nine hundred kilograms and is dedicated to Saint Cyril and Methodius. It is decorated with scenes of both saints, their arrival in Moravia and the baptism of Prince Bořivoj. The smaller bell weighs three hundred and forty-five kilograms and is dedicated to Saint Zdislava. It reminds of her as a mother, a helper to those in need and a builder of the church. The bells were blessed by Bishop Josef Hrdlička in May 2008 and in September of the same year they were hung. The older bell Philip and James, weighing over two tons, remained in the tower. The bell of the Virgin Mary was placed on the floor of the intermediate level of the tower as a memorial.

Around the church there once lay a large cemetery, one of the oldest in Zlín. In 1842 it was relocated to a field above the Kudlovský stream near today's reservoir. After the opening of the Forest Cemetery it was closed in 1932 and abolished in 1949. Today there is a park on that spot.

Tips for visitors

For the best experience we recommend a visit in a quiet morning, where natural light is pleasant in the interior, which highlights the historical architecture of the temple.

The church is located in the heart of the city, so it is very well accessible on foot even through public transport; check the current connection in the search engine.

When visiting we recommend to have small coins with us for any gifts or maintenance contributions.

For interior photography are the most suitable places towards the main altar, where the windows create an interesting game of light and shadows. We recommend focusing on the details of historical elements.

Families with children should follow a quiet and respectful regime so that the religious atmosphere of the place and the calm of other visitors is not disturbed.

For kids

Imagine going back to the past in the Middle Ages, exactly the city of Zlín. Where today is a modern city with high buildings and wide streets, there was only a small, narrow moat and several wooden houses.

The church of St. Philip and James in Zlín was built as a defensive fortress against the long falls of the Turks. It was a large building with massive walls and high towers that protected the population from danger.
