Zlín Castle is a four-winged structure in Baroque-Classical style with an inner courtyard. It stands in the middle of Svobody Park in the center of Zlín. Today it serves for exhibitions and cultural events and is home to Živý Zlín, a cultural and creative center.

Its origins date back to the time of the Šternberk family. In 1358, brothers Albrecht Aleš and Zdeněk of Šternberk purchased the Zlín estates. During their rule, the first documented fortified house was built here, surrounded on all sides by a water-filled moat with drawbridges. After 1366, it is mentioned in records as a castle and at the same time as the most valuable object of the estates. According to a legend recorded by Moravian topographer Řehoř Wolný, the Zlín fortified house was said to be called Šternberk.

In the second half of the sixteenth century, the Gothic fortified house was rebuilt into a Renaissance castle. During the Hungarian uprising, it was plundered by Hungarians. The damaged building was then reconstructed in Baroque style in the second half of the eighteenth century by Count František Xaver Khevenhüller-Metsch.

In 1860, Brno businessman Leopold Alexander Haupt von Buchenrode bought the large estate with the castle. In 1897, his son Stefan Viktor took it over after him. Between 1904 and 1905, the castle was renovated according to a design by Leopold Bauer. In 1930, the city rented it to the Baťa support fund. They established a club house with a café here, and the castle thus opened to the public.

At the end of the 1950s, a museum and exhibition spaces moved into the castle. Until 2012, the Museum of South-Eastern Moravia was housed here, and the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts also had its permanent exhibition here. The vacant spaces were temporarily used from January 2013 to September 2014 by folk ensembles and wind orchestras. Since February 2014, the Václav Chad Gallery has been located on the second floor.

In the same year, a reconstruction plan based on a study by architect Pavel Míček was presented. It would have significantly changed the castle's appearance and provoked quite pronounced reactions. In 2015, therefore, a public poll decided that it would not be renovated according to it. The city leadership came up with a new plan in 2019. A year later, Zlín obtained a grant of nine million crowns for window replacement. In 2021, a new version of the reconstruction was made public, designed by the studio of architect Pavel Mudřík in cooperation with architect Martina Gábor.
