Kostel svatého Jakuba Většího ve Vroutku Kostel

The Church of Saint James the Greater in Vroutek is a Romanesque filial church located in the town of Vroutek within the Ústí nad Labem Region, Czech Republic. Dating back to the late 12th century, it stands as the oldest sacred monument and building in Vroutek. The church holds historical significance as part of an enclosed complex with a noble seat belonging to the Hrabišic family. Today, it is owned by the city and protected as a cultural monument.

The origins of this church are linked to significant political and religious changes occurring in Bohemia during the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The region saw the rise of influential noble families like the Hrabišic and increased influence from monastic orders such as the Knights Hospitaller. Kojata IV. Hrabišic, a notable figure of this era, donated Vroutek to the Knights Hospitaller in Prague around 1227, indicating that the church was already standing by then. Radiocarbon dating suggests its construction predates this recorded mention, with evidence pointing towards an interval between 1155 and 1200 for the cutting of timber used in its construction.

Architecturally, the Church of Saint James the Greater is a testament to Romanesque design, originally part of a fortified complex that included a noble seat. Over the centuries, it underwent significant modifications; notably, the tribune was altered in 1593 and restoration work was conducted by Vladislav Hrobčický z Hrobčic in the mid-19th century. The nave's vault dates back to the late 16th century, with a new roof added in 1694. These changes reflect both evolving architectural styles and the church’s enduring significance over time.

Ownership and administration of the church have seen dramatic shifts throughout its history. Initially under the patronage of the Hrabišic family, it later came under the control of the Benedictine monastery Porta Apostolorum until the Hussite Wars. In 1357, a significant event occurred when Jan was installed as parish priest by the Benedictine abbot. Later, in 1412, Pavel led a dispute that resulted in his appointment as vicar, affecting future appointments. The church's fortunes continued to evolve, becoming filial to Buškovicí in 1620 and later serving various religious purposes through different periods.

Key events at this site include its role during the Hussite Wars and subsequent Protestant administration until the Thirty Years' War. Notably, farář Mikuláš Groš purchased a house for his wife in 1617, reflecting personal histories intertwined with the church's legacy. Archaeological findings have revealed sixty burial mounds around the church, some dating back to the early 13th century, offering insights into its historical context.

Today, the Church of Saint James the Greater is accessible and maintained as a cultural monument, though it no longer serves for regular religious services.
