The church of St. John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic church in the Upper Zdar, which after World War II stopped being a separate village and became part of the village of Hajnice. As an ancient building it is protected by the state in the register of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic.

Originally a single-boat Gothic church was founded in 1350, which makes it one of the remarkable monuments of the late Middle Ages. Already in 1384 he became a parish church and served as a centre of the spiritual life of the local community. This status continued until the period of reformation. From 1530 to 1600, the church went through a Protestant period during which its use changed radically. After 1620, administrative changes followed - the village was first assigned to Maršov, later in 1717 to Old Buki. Only since 1786 did the church return to the position of the parish temple.

At the challenge of changing building trends, the church was rebuilt in the late Gothic style in 1600 and underwent further modernization modifications in subsequent times. A valuable part of the construction is the bell on the tower, which bears the year 1603. The bell says, "Thank God with a clear voice, and I remind people of their mortality" - a reference to the medieval tradition of bells as witnesses to time and mortality. The church has been subjected to several repairs over the centuries, trying to preserve its substance.

Nowadays, the church is in an astonished state without equipment. The church area includes a historical cemetery with a perimeter wall, which is maintained with care by the association NaŽdáar and volunteers. Next to the cemetery stands the monument of local victims of the First World War and the cross from 1812, which complements the spiritual landscape of the place. Regular services are not currently held in the church. Although the church is closed, it remains a witness to the medieval settlement and long course of Czech history in one small village.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Horní Žďár is a Roman Catholic church and a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. After the Second World War, Horní Žďár became part of the municipality of Hajnice.

The church was founded in 1350 as a single-nave Gothic structure and was already a parish church by 1384. It is evidence of the medieval settlement of the village. Between 1530 and 1600 the church was Protestant. In 1600 it was rebuilt in the style of late Gothic and was later further modified in modern times. Over the centuries it underwent several repairs.

The parish arrangements changed over time. After 1620 the village was attached to the parish of Maršov and in 1717 to the parish of Staré Buky. From 1786 the church was a parish church again.

On the bell tower hangs a bell from 1603. It bears the inscription: "With a clear voice I give thanks to God and remind people of their mortality."

Today this Gothic church is closed and unused and has no furnishings. Regular services are not held in it.

The church is surrounded by a historic graveyard with a boundary wall. It is cared for by the volunteer association NaŽďar together with other volunteers. Next to the graveyard stands a memorial to local victims of the First World War and a cross from 1812.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the church of St. John the Baptist is during the morning hours when the light is pleasant and the place is less busy. The ideal time for a trip is in spring or autumn, when nature is beautifully blooming or coloured around. In summer it is advisable to avoid the noon hours when it can be quite hot inside the church. In winter, the church offers a quiet atmosphere and an opportunity to explore its historical details without crowds of tourists.

If you arrive by public transport, stops are nearby, but the current connection is always good to check in the traffic search engine.

When visiting the church, wear comfortable clothes and shoes because it is a historic building with stone stairs and uneven surface. In winter it is advisable to wear warmer clothes, because the interior may not always be sufficiently heated. Kids can bring little laptops or dye rings to make the tour more interesting. Also remember the hat or scarf, because in church you often walk with a headgear.

Photography is permitted, but it is advisable to respect other visitors and not illuminate the interior with strong light. The best places for photos are the entrance portal with gothic elements, historical windows and interior with late gothic elements. The best light is in the morning or afternoon hours when the rays of the sun create pleasant shadows and illuminate details. In winter it is advisable to take pictures in clear weather when the outdoor light is strong enough.

In the vicinity of the church is worth visiting the historic cemetery with a perimeter wall, which is part of the monument and offers a quiet environment for walking. There is also a memorial to the local victims of the First World War, which is located with dignity and resembles the victims of the War. The cross from 1812, located near the church, is another interesting place to visit. The village of Hajnice, which has been part of the Upper Zdar since World War II, is located within the foreseeable distance and offers additional possibilities for walking and exploring local history.

For families with children, a visit to the church is interesting due to its historic atmosphere and the possibility to explore medieval architecture. Children can see small detailed elements such as statues or stone reliefs that fascinate them. In the vicinity of the church you can play in the cemetery where there is enough room for safe movements. It may be interesting for older children to visit the memorial of war victims and explain the importance of historical events. In Hajnice, which is nearby, families can visit the local museum or walk the picturesque streets.
