Kostel svatého Petra na Poříčí stands in Prague's New Town on Bishop Street and testifies to the long medieval development of sacral architecture in the city. consecrated to the Apostle Peter, originally served as a parish church of the German community of the extinct village of Poříčí and today it is managed by the order of cruisers with a red star.

The church construction dates back to the second half of the 12th century when the ruling king Vladislav I. built it The original Romanesque basilica had a distinctive appearance with two towers on the western facade, which have been preserved until today. In the space between the towers there was a bleachers whose window was preserved. The construction was made of thick walls made of leech blocks. The main ship remained unarched, the side ships opened with three arcades carried by prismatic pillars, two of which were preserved from the southern line. The walls were decorated with paintings, the remains of which were partially preserved in the windows.

Around 1200 he introduced the Order of German Knights to the church of Moravian Margrave Vladislav Jindřech, who founded his hospital and also his seat. Later she bought the church Konstancie Uherská, widow of the King of Overmind Otakar I., and donated it together with other assets to St. Francis's Hospital, which was founded in the same year by her daughter Anezka. The original hospital fraternity gradually became the Czech order of cruisers with a red star. After the flood in 1280 there was a mass grave at the church, and a cemetery was later set up here. At the beginning of the 14th century, a parish school was built at the church.

A fundamental transformation came with the late Middle Ages. The foundation of the New Town of Prague in 1348 and its representative parish churches gave rise to the need for restoration. The reconstruction began in 1382 by demolishing the northern Romanesque ship. The Gothic twin ship was built in its place, whose construction was completed in 1395. The new presbytery was completed in 1406 - it was five-sided and twice as wide as the original Romanesque. Long construction works paid for by religious charity continued until 1411. An interesting preserved southern Romanesque boat from an old building that became part of today's church.

The church is also remembered in Hussite history. In 1414, vicar Mikulash, a cruiser, introduced a unique way of holy communion - in addition to traditional communion at the main altar, there was also acceptance under both side altars. In 1419, after the battle of sanctification, the Hussites expelled the cruisers from the church, but the temple itself was not destroyed - it is believed that it was spared by the precisely mentioned Hussite reforms carried out here earlier. In 1436, the cruisers returned and continued to manage the church.

Kostel svatého Petra na Poříčí remains a testament to the medieval transformation of Prague architecture, from the towers of Paris to the Gothic ships to the Hussite reforms that left their traces.

Hi and thank you for your interest in St. Peter's Church in Poříčí in the heart of Prague's New Town. You are standing in front of one of the most famous medieval monuments that tells us the story of many generations and historical changes.

Look at this impressive facade. It comes from a time when the building was built as a parish church for the German village of Poříčí. This area, which is now part of New Town, has had its own life and character in the past. The church evolved from the Romanesque basilica of the 12th century to the Gothic look we see today. Note the elegant Gothic elements such as windows and architectural solutions that contribute to its unique appearance.

Several important personalities play a role in the history of the church. These included Vladislav I., Vladislav Jindřich, Konstancie Uherská and Přemysl Otakar I., who influenced not only the political scene but also the spiritual life of the time. An important moment was also the marriage of Anezka Přemysnánka and František I, who celebrated here.

Interesting fact is that St. Peter's Church stands as a witness to the long-term development of sacral architecture. Originally served as a parish church for the German community, today it is managed by order of cruisers with a red star, which adds another layer of history and meaning.

For kids

About 876 years ago, in Prague, less known as the ancient Hradčany, something very special began to be built - the church of St. Peter in Poříčí. It was like when people together remembered a new game: full of hope and effort to create something that would survive centuries.

The church was built during the reign of King Vladislav I and originally had the appearance of Romanesque Basilica. Think of it as an ancient cathedral with smooth walls and painted windows, which was like a greenhouse to the faith and community of people.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring season breathes around this novel-Gothic building a new life. The fresh green in the adjacent alleys is complemented by grey stone masonry and the morning sun gently lights the interior through the stained glass. At this time the attendance is mild, which allows quiet contemplation without much noise. Layer clothing is recommended as thick walls maintain internal cold even during warmer days. The best time for the tour is the morning hours, when the surrounding urban tourism is still subdued.

During the hot summer months, the inner space of the temple offers welcome refreshments and pleasant shade. The sharp noon light highlights architectural details of the facade and creates significant contrasts on high towers. Since this is the main tourist season, there are more people around the monument and its ships. The practical advice is to visit early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and heat in the streets. Care must be taken for appropriate clothing covering the shoulders and knees, which requires respect for the sacral site.

Autumn days cover the Nové Město in golden shades and morning fog, which provide the historic place with mysterious character. The low sun in the afternoon paints long shadows and makes the rough structure of the ancient stone stand out. It is often windy and rainy in this period, so it is good to choose fixed footwear and waterproof clothing for movement around the building. The number of visitors with coming cold falls, so you can enjoy the details of architecture in much more privacy than in summer.

Winter time brings a quiet and secluded atmosphere to the temple, especially in the advent period when space is filled with spiritual peace. If snow attacks, the white blanket perfectly contrasts with a dark roof and towers, creating an impressive visual experience. Since the massive masonry in the frost does not hold any heat, it is absolutely necessary to wear very warm clothes, gloves and a hat. The days are short and it is getting dark early, so check in advance the actual opening hours that can be limited during this season.
